(Julia Wakeham and director/actor Liam O Mochain in Wc, above.)
by Alan Kline
When I first visited Irish filmmaker Liam O Mochain ten years ago on the set of his debut feature, The Book That Wrote Itself, one of the first things I noticed was that he had managed to pull together production elements that would have been difficult for a film with ten times the budget. On the first day, he had managed to get the City of Dublin to give him a double-decker bus, complete with driver, to shoot on throughout the city. I, and a few dozen other tourists, had just paid the equivalent of $20 each for a tour on a similar bus, just the day before. Later in the production, he visited the Venice Film Festival with a small crew, attended a press conference, and asked a variety of celebrity luminaries questions, in character as Vincent, »

Oops!: Louie Vito said the jitterbug has been one of his favorite dances so far. “It’s flipping, kicking, flicking, it’s all about fun,” he says. But one move he wasn’t prepared for was dropping. During a flip, Vito’s dance partner Chelsie Hightower fell to the floor with a thud. Both dancers knew it was happening, but the performance had to go on. “Getting her to her feet was all I cared about,” he says. Hightower added she just wanted to get to the next step as quickly as possible. “It looks really quick, but when you’re in it, it feels like a lifetime.” My Left Foot: Just as Kelly Osbourne’s sprained foot was beginning to heal, she dislocated her small left toe. “It actually hurts more than my sprained ankle,” she says, but adds it will heal quickly. Films on the cutting edge. That's how I would describe the 50 movies on this list. While some moviegoers may find it an 'alien' experience to refer to sub-titles in understanding what's happening on the big screen, a good number of audiences are totally enjoying the different and often surprising take by many foreign filmmakers, nothwithstanding the language barrier.
Content-wise, the 50 movies feature stories about war and peace, love and romance, family affairs, coming-of-age tales, cultural and religious diversity, social issues (including prostitution and abortion) and personal - celebrating life or facing death with dignity. Jim Sheridan used to be a great director. He made My Left Foot in 1989, The Field in 1990, In The Name Of The Father in 1993, The Boxer in 1997 and In America as recently as 2002. Then for some unknown reason he pissed it all away by directing Get Rich Or Die Tryin’ with 50 Cent. What was he thinking?
I hope Daniel Day Lewis deleted him from his friends list on his facebook account after that huge mistake!
A few years on and Sheridan has a film that has generated interest recently not least because James Bond has signed up to be in it. It is called Dream House and Daniel Craig has been in talks to star since June. Craig plays a family man who relocates his brood to a small town in New England.

As soon as Get Rich or Die Tryin' was released, starring a then-hot 50 Cent, it was evident that the climb back up to respectability might be a long one for Jim Sheridan, the guy who previously impressed us with films like My Left Foot and In the Name of the Father. I'm not sure how much good Brothers, his upcoming film with Jake Gyllenhall, Natalie Portman and Tobey Mgauire, will do. (Premise is great, trailer has me worried.) But I'm now a lot more interested in his follow-up Dream House, because Daniel Craig is joining the cast. Variety has the news, and describes Craig's character as "a New York publishing exec who relocates his family to a small New England town, only to learn that their new home was the scene of a vicious murder." Sounds like the sort of info that should really be released before buying (isn't there »

By now, we're all used to British actor Daniel Craig striking fear into the hearts of terrorists as super spy James Bond. But Variety reports that Craig will soon be the victim of terror in an upcoming Jim Sheridan (of the upcoming film Brothers) directed psychological thriller titled Dream House. The story follows a New York publishing executive who moves his family to a new home in a small New England town. But the housewarming is anything but pleasant when they discover that a grisly murder may have left behind a few haunting residents in the house. Shooting starts January with Universal distributing sometime next year. While I have a certain amount of confidence in Craig's career choices, the talent behind the camera leaves something to be desired. Sure, Sheridan has received more than a few Oscar noms for his Daniel Day-Lewis collaborations (My Left Foot, In the Name of »

When you hear that Daniel Craig has gotten involved with a Dream House from a company like Morgan Creek, the layman would assume that the housing market has begun to pick up. Not so, as Dream House is actually a psychological thriller.
Directed by Jim Sheridan off a script by David Loucka, Dream House will have Craig play a New York publishing exec who relocates his family to a small New England town only to learn that their new home was the scene of a vicious murder. If you recognize the direction, you should, it's probably because he has been nominated for six Oscars for his previous films including My Left Foot, which won Daniel Day-Lewis an Oscar, and In The Name of the Father. »

There's a rather surprising and worrisome piece of news that's popped up over at The Hollywood Reporter (here and here). It seems that Ireland's department of finance is looking to save some cash and have recommended shaving €37 million (or $52.6 million) from arts and culture funding, which includes ending the Irish Film Board.
Ifb chief Simon Perry has noted that the Irish media sector has boomed over the last couple decades, creating thousands of jobs. He says: "Closure of the Irish Film Board would mean that the production of Irish films will stop completely," which will not only end the industry, but hurt tourism as he claims nearly 50% of tourists visit Ireland after seeing it in a film -- a pretty fair estimate I'd say, given the number of people who drool when they see the country on the big screen.
The Ifb was closed before, in 1987, but was re-established after »

Brothers stars Natalie Portman, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Tobey Maguire. Directed by Jim Sheridan, the helmer of both My Left Foot and Get Rich or Die Tryin’, it is a remake of a famous Danish film from 2004 called “Brodre.”
Natalie Portman plays Grace Cahill, a mother of two and wife to a soldier named Sam (Maguire). When on his fourth tour of duty, Sam goes missing, which causes his brother Tommy (Gyllenhaal) to take his place and comfort Grace and her children. However, things get messy as Sam returns and finds out that his wife and brother have developed a special kind of relationship of their own.
A critical note against the trailer: it’s far too much of a roller coaster. Starting off with a song by The Fray is fine, and the moodal change with “Pride (In The Name of Love)” by U2 can only be expected once it »

From director Jim Sheridan, the force behind some of the most powerful movies in recent memory (My Left Foot, The Field, In the Name of the Father) comes Brothers, the story of a family torn apart by the misfortunes of war. The film is set for release December 4th, 2009. The trailer may look a little long on melodrama, but I can see Sheridan making it work. The real test will be the abilities of our three younger actors. Here's the synopsis from the press release, and below find the trailer. Brothers tells the powerful story of two siblings, thirty-something Captain Sam Cahill (Tobey Maguire) and younger brother Tommy Cahill (Jake Gyllenhaal), who are polar opposites. A Marine about to embark on his fourth tour of duty, Sam is a steadfast family man married to his high school sweetheart, the aptly named Grace (Natalie Portman), with whom he has two young daughters (Bailee Madison, »

We know better than to expect standard melodrama from Jim Sheridan, the director behind In America, In the Name of the Father, and My Left Foot. Known for making films that feature gut-wrenching performances, he’s got one heck of a vehicle for eliciting powerful emotions in Brothers, a tale of family, love and loyalty set against the backdrop of military operations in Afghanistan.
The film is a remake of Susanne Bier's Danish war film Brødre (Brothers), and you can check out the trailer using the below player.
Brothers revolves around siblings and polar opposites Captain Sam Cahill (Tobey Maguire) and Tommy Cahill (Jake Gyllenhaal). When Sam goes missing and is presumed dead, Tommy, who is an ex-con and drifter, tries to fill the void left behind by taking responsibility for his brother’s wife Grace (Natalie Portman) and two young daughters. As Tommy tries to turn his life around, »

The trailer for the Us remake of the Danish film “Brødre”, simply called “Brothers”, has popped up online. There is no shortage of big stars in this one, Jake Gyllenhaal, Natalie Portman (yes please) and Tobey Maguire and the thing is being directed by Jim Sheridan of My Left Foot and Get Rich or Die Trying fame. The story is revolves around when a woman finds out that her husband (Maguire) has apparently died in Iraq and his brother (Gyllenhaal) comes over to help her out, seeing that she has two kids to take care of and all. Time passes and the two start falling in love but then they find out that the dead husband and brother isn’t really dead after all (oops). This clearly puts a damper on the relationship between them but the “dead” brother is a changed man when he returns and seems to be craving human blood and flesh. »
