Oscar Talk Episode Fifteen: Avatar, Nine, It’s Complicated, Crazy Heart, Top Ten

18 December 2009 12:30 PM, PST | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

Kris Tapley and I get serious about what’s going to happen in the next month. Avatar will gain momentum, we think, while Nine and Invictus could lose it. Which films will make it to the final top ten? We agree on the obvious front-runners. But what could sneak in? Quentin Tarantino likes Star Trek.  Kris likes Crazy Heart and The Messenger. I like District 9. Could raucous comedy It’s Complicated score some noms? We also slice and dice the best director category, and discuss our fave holiday films, revealing a considerable generational divide: National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation vs. Meet Me in St. Louis. …

Shelf Life: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

16 December 2009 2:02 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Folks weren't too happy with my "Shelf Life" assessment of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation two weeks ago, and perhaps understandably so: the holidays, and holiday movies in particular, bring out the sentimentality, nostalgia, and often otherwise muted affection that folks feel at other times of the year and for other movies. But while I still plan to revisit It's a Wonderful Life next week - a film, I pre-emptively admit, I have no particular allegiance or fondness for - I figured I'd instead choose something safer, less passionately followed, less contentious: Harry Potter.

Of course I'm kidding. Few fan bases are as impassioned as those of J.K. Rowling's book series and their cinematic adaptations, and as a non-participant in its cultural phenomena, I recognize the shark-infested waters in which I find myself as I examine the artistic merits of a movie that is beloved by so, so, so many people. …

Cinematical Seven: Kids Movies That Won't Drive You Crazy

15 December 2009 7:15 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Now that you have 10 more days until the main event, and the little rugrats are home on Christmas vacation, you have probably been buying (and watching) your fair share of kids' movies. The latest family flick to hit the shelves is G-Force, but don't worry - if you thought that I was about to suggest that movie as part of your family-friendly viewing, think again. But it did get me thinking back to the kids classics that I still watch and love to this day.

Now, I'm a tough audience for family films, because even as a kid I didn't watch that many of them. In most cases my parents just let me watch whatever I wanted, but don't let that scare you off my list. I may have had a varied movie upbringing, but occasionally some family-friendly flicks would make it into heavy rotation -- and if there is …

Missed Christmas movies: Disney’s ‘One Magic Christmas’

14 December 2009 9:09 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Like most of the planet (or at least the 12 people I’ve talked to), I count National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation as one of the best (and certainly funniest) Christmas movies in cinema history. I also greatly enjoy Home Alone, Elf, A Charlie Brown Christmas, The Santa Clause and Noel (yes, Noel.  I know, Paul Walker lacks a little, um, well, acting talent, but it’s still a good movie).  And right up there with my favorite December 25th-themed flicks is Disney’s One Magic Christmas starring Harry Dean Stanton and Mary Steenburgen and released in 1985.  Sadly I feel this movie has been left in the dust in popularity, but it is not a film to forget.  It’s family-friendly (for kids 10 and up) and possesses depth and heart-felt emotion.

The story revolves around a woman named Ginny Grainger (Steenburgen) who seems to lack all joy in life.  Her love for her husband, …

'Bones' recap: The gift of shirtless Booth

11 December 2009 7:12 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

This year's Christmas episode lacked the emotional impact of Season 1's quarantine and the puckishness of Season 3's mistletoe kiss, but it did have something going for it: Shirtless Booth. (Watch the scene below.) His clothing became evidence after a man dressed as Santa robbed a bank with a bomb strapped to his chest, exited to meet Booth, and blew up. Watching Booth grow increasingly uncomfortable as Brennan slowly removed his tie, his shirt, his "cocky" belt buckle and his pants ("I’m just gonna start reciting some saints"), was worth sitting through the rest of the hour that while okay, …

Hate Christmas? Have We Got a Movie (or 6) for You!

11 December 2009 4:14 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

For most, Christmas is a happy time rife with warm family memories, selfless gift giving, gentle snowfalls, and the sharing of the season's goodwill tidings.

For others, Christmas is a time when you can't step into an elevator without being subject to the Muzak version of "O Holy Night." When going to your local pharmacy means being guilted into giving up your spare change by a guy with a bell who looks like he just got released from prison.

We've got 6 movie recommendations for those with a more cynical perspective of the season. They offer the chance to enjoy some seasonal cinematic joys with more edge and less good cheer. From German terrorists to singing skeletons, little green monsters to an alcoholic St. Nick, we've got all the bases covered.

To find out when these Bah Humbug selections are playing, check out our Holiday TV Movie Guide: The 12 Flavors of Christmas. …

Disney Xd Earns Most-Watched Day And Telecast With "Phineas And Ferb Christmas Vacation"

8 December 2009 10:24 AM, PST | icelebz.com | See recent iCelebz news »

Thanks to "Phineas and Ferb," Disney Xd is where the boys are. The new Disney network, which offers less "Hannah Montana" and more action-oriented shows like "Aaron Stone," scored with the premiere of "Phineas and Ferb Christmas Vacation."

The hit cartoon's holiday special premiered on Sunday and became Disney Xd's #1 telecast yet. It earned 2.62 million total viewers, and scored with their key demos of kids and boys, becoming the #1 kids program in the time period and also the #3 telecast that night in total viewership.

In "Phineas and Ferb's Christmas Vacation," the titular characters must stop Dr. Doofenshmirtz from spreading naughtiness across the city with his "Naughty-inator" and instead must help restore holiday cheer. The entire day was filled with a "Phineas and Ferb" marathon, which made it Disney Xd's most-watched day in the network's short history.

Sam Worthington’s Avenger’s T-Shirt is a Fire Starter

7 December 2009 1:49 AM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Sometimes I just can't beat the man known as Peter Sciretta over at Slashfilm. And today is one of those days. He's put together a hilarious story mocking one of my own favorite whipping posts -- MTV -- and their casting rumor-mongering based on Sam Worthington's wardrobe selection during a recent Avatar live chat. Worthington, Hollywood's new action tentpole boy-toy, was spotted wearing an Avengers t-shirt, leading the great minds at the former music television network to speculate that he's either in talks or silently campaigning to be a part of the Marvel Studios film, due in 2012, one that doesn't even have a director yet. It's absurd, I know. Now, if only someone would spot me wearing my National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation shirt, I could finally get them to green-light my proposed remake. …

Review: Everybody’S Fine

4 December 2009 4:00 AM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

It’s early December and folks are beginning to slide into the full holiday spirit. With 21 days until Christmas, we’re not quite ready for the traditional movie fare. Jimmy Stewart, 34th Street and the 24-hour Christmas Story marathon aren’t quite ready to take out of the oven, but Everybody’S Fine arrives just in time, and it’s just the right recipe to ease us into the proper mood. Unlike the comical antics of Chevy Chase’s Christmas Vacation or the sappy old Wonderful Life, Everybody’S Fine isn’t technically a holiday movie at all. The holiday itself has an extremely small, supplementary role in the story, but it’s the events that lead up to the ending that make it a perfect movie to lead us gently into what this time of year is all about.

Everybody’S Fine stars Robert De Niro as Frank, an …

My new Christmas classics

3 December 2009 6:30 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

When I was growing up, animated Christmas specials were an essential family tradition. Over several years, my brother and I had filled a Betamax tape with our favorites (Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Mickey's Christmas Carol, 'Twas the Night Before Christmas, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, etc.), and as soon as the Thanksgiving turkey was finished, we simply wore it out. (To be completely honest, I couldn't swear that the tape didn't get some play on a few rainy days in July, too.) As an adult, my affection for Christmas comfort-tv is as strong as ever, and in recent years, …

Shelf Life: National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation

2 December 2009 6:02 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

On Thanksgiving Day this year, I sat with my girlfriend's lovely family eating turkey and watching Home Alone, and it occurred to me that in the hustle and bustle of reviewing new movies, I seldom take the time to go back and revisit the holiday movies that I remember from my childhood. Even among the titles I've viewed for this "Shelf Life" series, few of them were seminal kids movies, whether they were from my own childhood, or from those of previous or subsequent generations, and none of them have been traditional holiday or holiday-themed films.

Home Alone was a film I saw at a formative time in my young life - I was 14 or so - but National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation was probably more important to me, since it balanced gingerly on the line between family entertainment and more grown-up fare. In hindsight, it's probably more oriented for teenagers and kids than anyone, …

Culture Warrior: Towards a More Thanksgiving-Friendly Cinema

26 November 2009 12:35 AM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

I don’t know about your family, but in mine Thanksgiving is viewed largely as a warm-up drill for the Christmas season, a Christmas prequel if you will. At Thanksgiving I see, for the most part, the same extended family I end up seeing at Christmas, but for a far shorter duration of time. Whatever conversation I don’t have time to catch up on with my family over Thanksgiving I promise to continue over Christmas. Thanksgiving is when Christmas decorations are put up, when holiday shopping begins in full force, and when Christmas wish-lists are collected. Thanksgiving used to be the time when the first Christmas-themed movies of the year were released, but now movies like A Christmas Carol are released the first weekend in November in hopes of capitalizing over two months of manufactured Christmas spirit. Department stores and retail outlets have begun moving in unison with the trends of Christmas-themed Hollywood fare, putting …

DVD Review: Breathtaking 5-Disc Gift Set For ‘Gone With the Wind’

25 November 2009 10:48 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – If local news reports are to be believed, nearly everyone reading this will go holiday shopping sometime during the upcoming weekend. To those of you that are considering a DVD giftset purchase like the recent release of “The Wizard of Oz,” “Christmas Vacation,” or even “Mamma Mia!,” you couldn’t do much better than the breathtaking five-disc release marking the 70th anniversary of “Gone With the Wind”.

The lavishly-packaged new collector’s edition giftset of “Gone With the Wind” is one of those overwhelming releases in which the film itself practically becomes an afterthought to the collectibles and special features. Honestly, if you haven’t seen “Gone With the Wind,” it’s required viewing for the history of film. One of the most beloved movies ever made, even if you don’t love it (and I’ll admit that it’s not a personal favorite of mine like it …

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Mamma Mia! The Movie’ Given Gift Set Treatment

24 November 2009 7:30 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – It’s the most wonderful time of the year for Blu-Ray and DVD collectors. Every holiday season, studios pull out their most beloved films, polish up the picture, maybe add a special feature or two, and usually throw in a few collectibles for a gift set. Recent gift set releases include limited edition boxes for “Gone With the Wind,” “The Wizard of Oz,” and “Christmas Vacation”. The gleefully campy “Mamma Mia! The Movie” seems like a perfect fit and “The Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! More Gift Set” should make fans of the movie happy but is clearly the lowest rung on the ladder when it comes to these season releases.

Blu-Ray Rating: 2.5/5.0

Before we even get to the movie, what qualifies as a gift set? With recent releases including such unusual items as a watch (“Wizard of Oz”) and fake snow (“Christmas Vacation”), don’t you think a film as weird as “Mamma Mia! …

Upgrade Your Warner DVDs to Blu-ray for as Low as $7.95

Warner Home Video just announced a new program where you can upgrade several of your DVD titles to Blu-ray for as low as $7.95, and right now the price doesn't go any higher than $9.95. This is a similar program to the Red2Blu offer they made allowing customers to upgrade their HD DVD titles to Blu-ray, a program I actually took advantage of and loved it as a result.

The process to upgrade is simple. Consumers select the titles they want to upgrade on DVD2Blu.com, mail in their standard DVDs with pre-paid postage and a short time later receive copies of the same film on Blu-ray Disc. Consumers who place orders over $25 will receive free shipping. For a complete list of titles visit DVD2Blu.com, but I have included the most recent list of titles and prices directly below. 10,000 B.C.
