The latest trailer for Tim Burton's upcoming "Alice in Wonderland" hit the Internet this morning, offering up more scenes of Burton's particular brand of goth lunacy. The film, which hits theaters in March 2010 and stars Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter and Helena Bonham-Carter as the Queen of Hearts, is already one of the most hotly-anticipated releases of next year, and the new trailer reveals a handful of new scenes and images, including the Cheshire Cat (though there are still no shots of the caterpillar).
When the first trailer premiered, we were reminded of the classic video for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' "Don't Come Around Here No More," which cast Petty himself as the Mad Hatter. It was a trippy presentation that deftly used the imagery from the classic Lewis Carroll story and melded nicely with the spooky melancholy of the song. The new "Alice in Wonderland" trailer is much more manic,

Quick, when I say the words “SyFy Original Movie,” what images immediately rush to mind? Hokey CGI effects? Laughable character motivation? Bafflingly obtuse plots and stories? Now imagine this heralded brand, responsible for such masterpieces as “Ice Spiders” and “S.S. Doomtrooper,” attempting to interpret one of the most beloved pieces of western fiction ever.
This is the mindset one must enter before attempting to understand Alice, the SyFy mini-series. In a nutshell, the story is essentially a third installment of the Alice in Wonderland saga, if Lewis Carroll were alive and writing today, preferred teleplays to novels, had abandoned Victorian-era satire for dystopic art direction, and was intent on destroying the franchise so badly that no one would ever again be able to continue it. For those who remembered last year’s Tin Man, this is the exact same thing, simply swapping out The Wizard of Oz for Alice’s

Check out this interview with Kathy Bates, who plays the Queen of Hearts on Syfy Channel's upcoming Alice mini-series. The series is written and directed by Nick Willing (Tin Man). In the Interview, Nick Willing also shares his thoughts on working with Bates.
[jambovideo id="168180" /]
This interview shows off some of the more irreverent humor of Alice, as the characters acknowledge they aren't in the Wonderland of storybooks.
"Alice," the entirely new look at Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking-Glass," premieres this Sunday at 8/9c on Syfy.

Syfy's Alice Review: A Visually Whimsical Reimagining

If I describe SyFy's new four hour miniseries 'Alice' as a modern-day reimagining of Lewis Carroll's classic stories I am probably doing it a disservice. Yet I cannot think of a more appropriate way to describe it.
This new miniseries, written and directed by Nick Willing (Tin Man), takes almost all of the elements from 'Alice in Wonderland' and 'Through the Looking-Glass' but alters their context to create something new. Wonderland, we are told, has changed considerably since the events of those novels unfolded, evolving into a city of crumbling, twisting towers and buildings constructed out of cards and chess pieces.
Twenty-something karate instructor, Alice Hamilton (Caterina Scorsone) finds herself in this bizarre, twisted world when she gives chase to a man involved in the kidnap of her boyfriend, Jack Chase (Philip Winchester, Crusoe). Trying to find him and make her way back to her own world, she is

Even though we've all gotten a look at the full new poster for Alice in Wonderland thanks to a magazine scan, the Mad Hatter is still releasing new high-res snippets at his Facebook page. (Yes, we live in an era in which the Mad Hatter has a Facebook page. Get used to it).
Predictably, he's saving the middle section-- the one that debuts the Caterpillar-- until last. Today's section includes Alice, the White Rabbit, a very teeny Mad Hatter sitting at the end of the table, and the roses from the Queen of Hearts' garden. You can check it out below, because really, these visuals deserved to be looked at more than once.

Just over a week now until Halloween and we continue to gear up for the big event here at Boxwish. We’ve got a fantastic selection of fancy dress costumes on the site (see here), from superheroes to movie monsters, masks to T-shirts and our fervour for the frightening isn’t letting up any time soon. In fact, we’re continuing the fancy dress theme with this week’s eBay find, and like last week’s Blog (the Red Queen/ Queen of Hearts replica crown from Alice in Wonderland), it’s not actual wardrobe as worn by the actor on-camera, but something far more personal, a home-spun costume. And with temperatures plummeting, we think this could almost warrant fulltime wear, introducing the Max wolf costume from Where the Wild Things Are.

With Halloween on the horizon, our recent eBay finds have all been of the fancy dress variety, trying to offer up quirky and novel costumes for the upcoming spooky shindig. And for the past fortnight, we’ve been extending a helping hand to the hairier sex in kitting up for potential parties, however today we’re redressing the gender balance and sniffing out something for our female Boxwishers. And we’ve found something that’s certain to excite those with a theatrical bent – a fantastic replica of the crown worn by Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen/ Queen of Hearts in the upcoming Alice in Wonderland. Ideal for dressing up and, when no-one’s watching, pretending you’re royalty and shouting “off with their heads!”

Yeah, Tim Burton is making his version of "Alice in Wonderland," but it's nothing like what Syfy is putting together. And Burton doesn't have both Kathy Bates and Matt Frewer. The new event will air Dec. 6-7 on Syfy, following the tradition of past end-of-the-year specials, including "Tin Man." Many, many years after an Alice first disrupted Wonderland and the House of Cards, a new Alice makes her way into the new dimension, now played by Caterina Scorsone. She meets many of the classic characters, including the Queen of Hearts (Bates), the White Knight (Frewer), Caterpillar (Harry Dean Stanton), and special appearances by "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's" Colm Meaney as the KIng of Hearts and Alessandro Juliani from "Battlestar Galactica" as the 9 of Clubs. Syfy has announced that it will premiere Alice, its four-hour-long updated retelling of Lewis Carroll's 'Alice in Wonderland' and 'Alice Through the Looking Glass,' on Sunday, December 6th. The conclusion of the two-part miniseries will air the following day. The announcement was made by Mark Stern, Syfy's Executive Vice President of Original Programming, during the channel's Vancouver Press Tour.
Alice stars Caterina Scorsone as Alice Hamilton, a young, martial arts instructor, who finds her way to a parallel universe called Wonderland after her boyfriend is taken there by mysterious, well-dressed men called 'Suits'. This is not the Wonderland of Carroll's 'Alice' stories, though. Under the direction of Nick Willing, who also helmed Syfy's Emmy-winning miniseries Tin Man, the modernized Wonderland is presented as an oppressive and surreal place where people are kept in check by being fed positive human emotions drained from gamblers trapped in a casino.

In the wake of Night Of The Living Dead and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, horror has long been the favorite genre of a first-time filmmaker. Independent directors achieving enormous success and career-long legacies from features with all the polish of industrial films has been practically synonymous with horror. It seems hard to fault fledgling filmmakers for being drawn to the genre. The assumption prevails that if film is a gamble, horror is the safest bet; if it fails as art, it can still make money.
These days, theatrical box-office expectations for independent films have lowered while a breakout hit still requires costly marketing pushes. Direct-to-dvd proves lucrative but hardly christens household names. When some of the best-reviewed horror films of the past ten years are denied a theatrical run, the genre now seems less like a stepping-stone to the mainstream.
As film production went Diy in the decade since The Blair Witch Project,
