Condoleezza Rice's Smoking Gun

When I began dreaming about Condoleezza Rice, four years ago, I had no idea she was a torturer. Forbes named her 2005's Most Powerful Woman in the World, and that inspired me to make a movie about her. Courting Condi would be a 'musical-docu-comedy' about one man's attempt to win the heart of a Great American Woman. I found a man who was in love with her: Devin Ratray, a musician and actor who found fame as Buzz in Home Alone. I began building a production team that would eventually encompass 210 film professionals. Discovery agreed to finance the movie.
One week before shooting, trouble began. Our attorney called to deliver some devastating news: Discovery was pulling out. Karl Rove had taken the CEO out to lunch and warned him that unauthorized films about the administration's beloved 'steel magnolia' could...

Armored Review

Armored is hardly a film about a heist, because the very connotation of the word suggests careful planning and execution. When all the angles are covered, the con artists pull the perfect job. Of course, in most of these movies, typically the operation is interrupted by unforeseen wrinkles, which set up twists that keep the plot from grinding to a halt.
The Nimród Antal-directed movie borrows from the conventions of the genre, right up to the point where it might have become interesting. A diverse group of security guards conspire to rob their own armored trucks loaded with millions. That’s about as far as the formula takes the team (and the screenwriter).
The ill-conceived plot establishes a desperate newbie named Ty (Columbus Short) struggling to pay the bills and support his sibling, Jimmy (Andre Jamal Kinney), a street-tough truant with a talent for spray-paint art. As if a

Review: Law Abiding Citizen - Stupid and nasty

If you’ve read any of my other reviews, you might have picked up that I quite like action films. If you haven’t, allow me to explain; I quite like action films. That is to say Die Hard is my favourite film of all time, and Crank is the best action film of recent years bar none. That doesn’t mean that I don’t have extensive tastes, it just means that my tolerance for terrible Hollywood tripe is pretty high*. I will actively seek out films that look like they are going to be so-bad-they’re-good. Which is why the Jamie Foxx/Gerard Butler vehicle Law Abiding Citizen appealed to me. The trailers made it look really awful, and one reviewer described it as the ‘ultimate popcorn movie’, whatever that means. I was prepared for my thumbs to be thoroughly erect in appreciation.
Sadly Law Abiding Citizen falls at the first hurdle,

Shelf Life: National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation

On Thanksgiving Day this year, I sat with my girlfriend's lovely family eating turkey and watching Home Alone, and it occurred to me that in the hustle and bustle of reviewing new movies, I seldom take the time to go back and revisit the holiday movies that I remember from my childhood. Even among the titles I've viewed for this "Shelf Life" series, few of them were seminal kids movies, whether they were from my own childhood, or from those of previous or subsequent generations, and none of them have been traditional holiday or holiday-themed films.
Home Alone was a film I saw at a formative time in my young life - I was 14 or so - but National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation was probably more important to me, since it balanced gingerly on the line between family entertainment and more grown-up fare. In hindsight, it's probably more oriented for teenagers and kids than anyone,

Here's A Bit On 'Hangover 2'

Here's what director Todd Philips had to say about the upcoming "Hangover 2." Hint - not much:Phillips, who’s currently shooting the road-movie comedy "Due Date," with Robert Downey Jr. and "Hangover" star Zach Galifianakis, says he’s midway through working on the script for the "Hangover" sequel. Though he’s keeping the plot under wraps for now, he promises "The Hangover 2", which will reunite the trio of Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and Galifianakis, won’t simply rehash the stag-party-disaster formula of the first film. “What people loved about The Hangover was not Las Vegas or the bachelor party but these three characters,” Phillips says. “I think you can take those characters and put them in other situations, and you don’t need the sell of Vegas and a bachelor party and all that other stuff.” I dunno Mr. Philips, I think people Do want a rehash. That's just how people are.

Weekly DVD Drinking Game: Home Alone

I am not Kevin Carr, that I am aware of. But like Kevin, I enjoy inebriation the way tweeners enjoy Twilight. Well it's that time of the year again. The time when we take a moment from our busy lives and focus on peace, giving, and copious amounts of booze.
When we were kids, Home Alone was the kind of movie that never failed to entertain us with pratfalls and slapstick. Kevin McCallister became my idol of childish rebellion; eating ice cream for lunch and sledding down the stairs? Sweet! But as I got older, and developed a pronounced alcohol dependency, I began to examine ways to exploit this classic holiday film for the opportunities it afforded for binge drinking. To wit, I offer you my recently constructed Home Alone drinking game.
And now, to cover our butts...this game is intended only for those who are over the age of 21. Please don't make me call the

It's as much of an annual tradition as turkey, football, and awkward family dynamics -- the Thanksgiving TV marathon. You know the drill, you're stuffed full of mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie and you can't bear to watch the hopeless Detroit Lions take on the Green Bay Packers, so you start flipping channels looking for something...anything to get you through the day and maybe facilitate a nap. But so many channels. Well, let us be your guide. Here's our guide to the best marathon programming for Thursday, Nov. 26.

I don’t know about your family, but in mine Thanksgiving is viewed largely as a warm-up drill for the Christmas season, a Christmas prequel if you will. At Thanksgiving I see, for the most part, the same extended family I end up seeing at Christmas, but for a far shorter duration of time. Whatever conversation I don’t have time to catch up on with my family over Thanksgiving I promise to continue over Christmas. Thanksgiving is when Christmas decorations are put up, when holiday shopping begins in full force, and when Christmas wish-lists are collected. Thanksgiving used to be the time when the first Christmas-themed movies of the year were released, but now movies like A Christmas Carol are released the first weekend in November in hopes of capitalizing over two months of manufactured Christmas spirit. Department stores and retail outlets have begun moving in unison with the trends of Christmas-themed Hollywood fare, putting

Must Watch: Impressive New Trailer for Fox's Percy Jackson

Fox has quietly debuted yet another new trailer for Percy Jackson & the Olympians, making this the third trailer we've seen for this movie so far. Up until this point, we haven't really known what this would be like, what would happen in it and what the story would be. But this trailer finally gives us a glimpse of all that and I've got to say I'm a little more than curious now. In fact, I'm actually very impressed, this looks great, I'm totally in. The effects look good, even though they're probably far from being done, and the story looks pretty entertaining. My only complaint is that this means we'll see two different Medusa's next year!

I Love You Beth Cooper Blu-ray Review

Chris Columbus used to have a magic touch. Sure, you might not have liked the movies, but he was the hand behind the first two Home Alone movies and the first two Harry Potter films. He’s had misfires, for sure, but his first major script was Gremlins. Gremlins. But when you look at his filmography he goes from highs to lows, but there’s something of a chance-taker in him too. He was the guy who wanted to direct Rent, for god’s sake. And though his plastic hands have released such odious affairs as Stepmom and Bicentennial Man, he’s not a filmmaker to write off. My review of his latest - I Love You Beth Cooper - after the jump.
For his latest, he worked with Fox, got a midsummer release date, and when the film came out it was dumped like hot garbage. Perhaps it was having an unknown lead,

An odd little item at the Lat shares a brief word with Chris Columbus, the director best known for launching the franchises Home Alone, Harry Potter and next year's Percy Jackson. Neither the reporter nor even Columbus's Potter producer, however, give him much credit for anything beyond his gifted handling of child actors. "Chris Columbus was the exact right director for those films," producer David Heyman said of the first two Potter movies, while Columbus seems to acknowledge priming them for megastardom first and performance second. "They've really turned into terrific adults," Columbus said. "And that being said, they've also turned into terrific actors, you know." Sort of? Somewhere, the Culkin family is feeling more ripped off than ever. [Lat]

Blu-Ray Review: ‘I Love You, Beth Cooper’ Inspires Nothing But Hate

Chicago – Chris Columbus is not a filmmaker renowned for his use of subtlety. He seems incapable of telling a relatable human story without relying on his trademark brand of sophomoric slapstick. I was surprised that Macaulay Culkin didn’t pop up in Columbus’s “Rent,” and start hurling paint cans at the characters during their “Seasons of Love.” Even at age 51, Columbus is still an unruly child at heart.
That’s why his best films are the ones aimed at children, such as the original “Home Alone” or the first two “Harry Potter” installments. But when he attempts to reach an older audience, the results are often disastrous. And in an era of exceptional adult comedies, “I Love You, Beth Cooper” is a flat-out embarrassment.
Blu-Ray Rating: 1.0/5.0
This film proves that any source material can be drained of its humanity. The script was written by Larry Doyle, who based it

Beyoncé's Thanksgiving Special: On Stage And Behind The Scenes

Thanksgiving night is usually reserved for spiraling deep into a food coma while watching "Home Alone," but this year there will be an alternative to that. ABC is airing a special called "Beyoncé: I Am ... Yours" on Thanksgiving night at 9 p.m. The show will be made up primarily of a performance from her "I Am" tour (in particular, a show at the Wynn in Las Vegas), but also promises to feature behind-the-scenes footage and a rarely-seen look into her professional life on the road.
The first teaser ad just appeared online, and it looks like it will be worth fighting back the inevitable Tryptophan-induced psychosis to stay up and watch. The special promises to show the audience a side of Beyoncé that we've never seen, and it may just live up to that hype. There is footage of her in rehearsals, overseeing production and, in one especially telling scene,

Forgotten Films [1] is a semi-regular feature on Film Junk where we explore interesting movies that have fallen off the radar or slipped through the cracks over the years.
If you've seen the recent documentary Not Quite Hollywood, about the history of Australian b-movies and exploitation flicks, then you're probably familiar with the name Brian Trenchard-Smith. Trenchard-Smith directed some of the most beloved cult classics from down under including The Man From Hong Kong, Turkey Shoot, and Dead-End Drive In, before eventually going on to helm some of the later installments of the Leprechaun series. To the average person that might not mean much, but for hardcore genre fans, that basically makes him royalty.
Back in the '80s, he also took some time away from the carnage and blood-soaked mayhem to direct a family-friendly film of sorts called Bmx Bandits. The movie has an interesting claim to fame in that
