"Can't get enough, of the Stuff!" From the mid-1920s whereupon the eventual Oscar winning film Wings featured a Hershey Chocolate Bar prominently in the story right on up to the use of M&Ms in Steven Spielberg's E.T. and beyond to the modern James Bond films or Castaway (FedEx) or The Great Yokai War (Kirin Beer) or perhaps the worst offender ever: I, Robot, product placement is simply a large part of big expensive movies. And many filmmakers have either parodied product placement (ahem, sorry: Brand Integration) or even invented their own fictional consumer goods that only appear in their movies. Unlike television, which (in large part) relies on advertising to fund the creation of shows, there are rarely full commercials used explicitly in a film (before the screening of the film is another story, unfortunately!). But filmmakers love to offer ads for fake products or services or »

Barry Kripke, you have made a new enemy. Not only are your bratty antics a permanent thorn in Sheldon Cooper’s side. Not only is your speech impediment transparently designed to make you more annoying, which therefore actually does make you more annoying in a kind of post-modern, meta way. Not only does your mere presence in an episode of The Big Bang Theory certifiably guarantee unremitting lameness. But last night, you almost single-handedly torpedoed the Big Bang episode featuring very special guest star Katee Sackhoff, known to sci-fi geeks everywhere as Kara "Starbuck" Thrace of the late, great Battlestar Galactica. »

What could Levi Johnston possibly gain by posing naked for Playgirl? —Babs G., via the Answer B!tch inbox You mean besides money and the eternal high that comes with making Sarah Palin miserable? As the Jews might say, dayenu, that would have been enough. For women, there are tons of reasons for posing nude: Sharon Stone said she did it for money right after appearing in Total Recall. It sure didn't hurt, given that she later went on to do stuff like Basic Instinct and Casino. We won't even begin to discuss the ongoing successes of The Girls Next Door. But when it comes to guys who pose in adult mags, there are, generally, only two types: (1) Unknowns who, if the ploy works, graduate... »

A clutch of new films will cement Matt Damon's reputation as the hit of his generation. But that won't change this most reserved and politically committed of actors. Vanessa Thorpe reports
Runners taking part in the annual Miami Triathlon this time last year were surprised to spot a familiar face crossing the finishing line. It looked very like Jason Bourne, the implacable, brain-washed hitman, who was coming in with a time of just under an hour for the 6.2 mile leg. In fact Matt Damon, who plays Bourne in the trio of hit films based on Robert Ludlum's character, was competing in an effort to lose some weight. He had gained 30lbs that summer to play the part of the chubby, delusional executive at the centre of The Informant!, Steven Soderbergh's new film.
Its recent premiere in America may well prove the high-water mark of an already illustrious career. »

The Twitter-Wood feed started following its first canine today, as recent hacking victim and "Eclipse" actress Jodelle Ferland tweeted a pic referencing her dog "Genevieve Ferland." According to @gena_fur's Twitter account, Genevieve recently turned five, hates nail clippers and dressed as a princess last year for Halloween.
Lack of clothing was on the minds of two other "Twilight" series actors, though, as Tinsel Korey seems to have not yet found a dress for the "New Moon" premiere, and Charlie Bewley reported on his love of not wearing anything. Remarkably, I made none of this up. Check it out, along with an award Arnold Schwarzenegger recently presented to Kirk Douglas, a scandalous "Full House" photo and the reason "Iron Man 2" will show up to theaters late if it gets delayed. It's all in the Twitter-Wood report for November 6, 2009.

I don't know if you caught last night's 2009 Scream Awards on Spike TV last night. But if you didn't, then you missed out on one of the strangest parades of Hollywood back-patting ever staged. For those unfamiliar with this new heir to the Oscars and the Golden Globes, the Scream Awards are ostensibly all about celebrating the best in sci-fi, fantasy, and horror on both the big and the small screen. And just to show that the event is even cooler than the MTV Movie Awards, the categories honor such superlatives as Best Horror Movie, Best Villain, and my personal favorite, »

"Pull the trigger man. That's the only way this leather is coming off my back." - Jax to Alvarez, the head of the Mayans who orders him to give up his club jacket
Jax is supposed to be the hero of this little modern day Shakesperian epic, but he's starting to look more and more like the enemy in each episode.
I don't mean that he'll be the one in the end who has been scheming the whole time behind Samcro's back with the white power. This is a well-crafted, slow paced, high caliber drama, not a badly written Schwarzenegger movie with a thrown together twist ending (cough, Total Recall, cough).
Jax is more of an enemy of himself. He might have good intentions at heart, but his moves are nowhere near his brain. Maybe his loyalty to his family runs deeper than he ever imagined. Logic and family hardly make a decent cocktail. »

Environmental attorney Russell Swan, 42, was the second person to leave Survivor: Samoa for medical reasons. The Glenside, Penn., resident talked with People about the scare, the depression that accompanied being forced out of a show he’d applied for eight times and how ultimately reality TV strengthened his marriage and reaffirmed his life. --Carrie Bell Walk us through what happened at the challenge. I felt absolutely nothing out of the ordinary. The sun was shining. I didn’t feel hungry, thirsty or tired. I was like, “Let’s kick Foa Foa’s butt. Jeff stop talking and start this.” That’s where I depart from reality. My memory of what happened and what I saw on TV are two completely different things. I thought we were pushing the ball and damn that ball was heavy. When we finally got to the puzzle station, I remember stumbling around but I thought »

David Slade's still in the thick of "Eclipse" filming, and in his most recent tweetage from the set, it sounds like there's some violence in the mountains getting underway with some celebration on the side. A few of his cast members still seem to have Rome on their minds, which is understandable given the "New Moon" footage premiering there.
In completely non-"Twilight"-related posting, Ashton Kutcher's been hanging out with Barbra Streisand and Jeremy Piven headed out to an event being held by Matt Damon in San Francisco. Meanwhile, Ice-t's been shooting up the post-apocalyptic world of "Borderlands." To find out what he thoughts of it, as well as what Amanda Bynes thinks of marriage and what Arnold Schwarzenegger's been up to with a bunch of boy scouts, click onward to the Twitter-Wood report for October 22, 2009.

Ryan Reynolds, your 11th sexiest man alive, is set to cross-dress in his next as-yet untitled comedy. The sometime-Deadpool and soon-to-be Green Lantern will be donning dress and mascara to win his ex back, in one of the more unusual dating strategies we've heard. In a plot that sounds suspiciously like Mrs Doubtfire with the children removed (or Some Like It Hot without any gangsters or millionaires), the cross-dressing will be allowing Reynolds' dude-y character to befriend the ex who dumped him and hopefully win her back (our prediction: not that easy, but Life Lessons will be learned before the happy ending). It's all being written by Allan Loeb, the 21 and Wall Street 2 screenwriter, and produced by Working Title. So now the question becomes: where will it fit on the spectrum of cross-dressing comedies? Above White Chicks, we feel sure, but how will it fare against She's The Man or Total Recall? »

Former MGM chief Daniel Melnick died Tuesday in Los Angeles at 77. He had been struggling with lung cancer.
In a career that spanned decades, Melnick produced both Oscar-winning prestige pictures such as "Kramer vs. Kramer" and "Network," as well as the action movies "Total Recall" and "The Quick and the Dead."
Melnick worked extensively at Columbia, ABC, and MGM. It was at the latte... »

Back in December, it was revealed that a new Judge Dredd movie was to be made in a partnership between Danny Boyle's London-based DNA Films and computer games developer Rebellion, which owns the rights to the character.
However, in January, Boyle seemed unaware of the remake when asked about it and said he couldn't imagine a new version would be any better than the 1995 effort with Sylvester Stallone.
But last month, a Twitter message revealed that visualisations were being created and that Alex Garland was writing, or had written, a "great script" for the project. Garland has previously worked with Boyle on Sunshine and 28 Days Later.
I included the film in a poll that listed a series of proposed remakes and asked which was the most unnecessary.
To my surprise, Judge Dredd came top with 12 per cent of the 1,400 votes cast in the 12 days since the poll started. Is »

You know how you feel when you look at one of those blogs with all of the cute and fuzzy kitten pictures? Twitter-Wood's sort of like that today with good news following Elizabeth Taylor's heart surgery, Emmy Rossum with cotton candy, Paris Hilton with a monkey, and Arnold Schwarzenegger's happy breakfast picture.
All of those pics come in addition to an announcement by Jason Reitman that "Ghostbusters" fans should not want him to direct "Ghostbusters 3," as well as an on-set shot of Rainn Wilson with the band Frightened Rabbit, who recently got a tour of the office used in "The Office." Click on down to check out those posts and more. I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is the Twitter-Wood report for October 9, 2009.

For those of us hoping that Paul Verhoeven may one day return to his violent and campy b-movie roots, it still isn't looking likely to happen anytime soon. Until then, the only thing we have to turn to are the various direct-to-video sequels that have been churned out from his filmography. We've seen (or more likely, avoided) sequels to Starship Troopers, Basic Instinct and Hollow Man, and both Total Recall and Robocop are currently being prepped for remakes. Which leaves only one of his American films still untouched: the Razzie Award-winning Showgirls. Earlier this week a story surfaced over at German site Extratipp [1] about a potential sequel to Showgirls called Showgirls: The Story of Hope being written and directed by a guy named Marc Vorlander (whose IMDb page [2] is a completely blank slate). The movie would supposedly revolve around a minor character from the first film named Hope (Rena Riffel »

Vegas, martinis, and the words "baby" and "money" helped launch Vince Vaughn's film career -- and helped established him as an extraordinarily compelling cinematic scoundrel, a role he's played repeatedly over the last decade and change. But that isn't all Vaughn can do, as he's proven while assembling an admirably eclectic filmography, moving from comedy to horror to action thrillers and back again, and sharing screens with everyone from Richard Attenborough to Jennifer Lopez in the process. This weekend, Vaughn reunites with his old partner Jon Favreau in Couples Retreat, and to celebrate, we decided to revisit his best-reviewed films,... »

Back in July it was announced that Matt Damon and Emily Blunt would star in The Adjustment Bureau, a movie based on yet another Philip K. Dick short story. The late writer seems to have a treasure trove of film friendly stories, and while you may not know him by name, if you've seen Minority Report, Total Recall, or Blade Runner then you've seen the cinematic re-tellings of three of nine adaptations of his work. THR reports that Daniel Dae Kim (of ABC's "Lost"), John Slattery (of AMC's "Mad Men") and Michael Kelly (of HBO's "Generation Kill") will be joining Blunt and Damon in George Nolfi's directorial debut. The Adjustment Bureau "centers on a congressman (Damon), on the rise in politics, who meets a beautiful ballet dancer (Blunt) only to discover that a strange organization is keeping them apart." Slattery will be one of the higher-ups in the bureau »

With the endless stream of talent shows on TV, it shouldn't really be a shock to any of us that the new Fame remake - a classic tale of the quest for stardom - shot to the top of the UK box office last weekend.
It's among an avalanche of remakes coming our way so get ready to relive the 80s - and several other decades.
Also in the musicals genre, there's a new version of Footloose in the pipeline, with Chace Crawford apparently set to take on the role made famous by Kevin Bacon in the 1984 original.
There are also plenty of film do-overs in the genres of sci-fi, fantasy, action-adventure and horror which are more within the remit of The Geek Files. I've gathered some of them in a poll on the right of the page, where you can vote for those you believe are the most unnecessary. »

Movies were probably at one point considered to be a major threat to literature but, looking back, the two mediums have a pretty healthy working relationship going on. Directors and actors love to portray a good author, wellsprings of emotion and passion that they are, slaving over little words that build to world-changing proportions. The latest example is Jane Campion's Bright Star, the story of 19th century poet John Keats and his fiery romance with Fanny Brawne, and now that it's out in theaters, why not join us as we thumb through history, discovering cinema's 10 most brilliant portrayals of... »
