Charles Shyer Finds A Bff

3 December 2009 12:13 AM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Charles Shyer, director of the Father Of The Bride and Alfie remakes, is heading down a more original path with his next movie. He’s signed on to direct the female buddy comedy, Bff. And if you don’t know what that acronym stands for, we’ll help you out: it’s Best Friends Forever. Lol!The fairly low-budget ($20 million) flick will follow the fortunes of former childhood friends who reunite in their hometown many years later to find that one of them has become much, much more successful than the others. Needless to say, complications arise and hilarity, hopefully, ensues.Shyer hasn’t directed since the damp squib that was 2004’s Alfie, but according to the IMDb, he’s in pre-production on a new movie called Eloise In Paris. But with shooting set for the spring on Bff, we imagine that Eloise will be placed on the back burner. »

Last year's producers, Larry Mark and Bill Condon (Dreamgirls) were too busy to return, despite the fact that they helped raise last year's ratings by 13%.  The producing job then went to Adam Shankman (Hairspray) and Bill Mechanic (former CEO of 20th Century Fox Filmed Entertainment) and the search for a host continued.

Last year's host, Hugh Jackman, breathed new life into the show and the ratings, but he opted not to return again (though he will likely return at some point in the future).  A lot of names were being tossed around, including Tina Fey and Steve Martin (as a duo), Stephen Colbert and even veteran host Billy Crystal.

Word broke today that the producers asked the duo of Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr. to host and I was incredibly »
