Does Joe McElderry's The Climb lack the X Factor?

A massive ballad about positivity is hardly the most exciting choice for X Factor winner Joe McElderry's song. So why did Simon Cowell select it?
Joe McElderry has a great deal to look forward to in the coming months, not least a style overhaul so aggressive and merciless that it will make the process of metal being injected into Wolverine's skeleton look like a pat on the bum from Gok Wan. But while a new look Joe will emerge blinking into 2010's autumn sunshine, for the time being the old one is No 1 on iTunes with The Climb, a song first (and very recently) made famous by Miley Cyrus.
With its plinky piano intro, chorus about challenges and overall feel of what we might term "generic inspirational chat", The Climb is already proving something of a controversially uncontroversial choice. It's too predictable, some argue – although last year the producers went

Portal creator heading into Dark Void territory

When it came out in 2007 Valve Software's Portal amazed and delighted the critics and gamers. It took a simple enough concept (use a gun that opens a wormhole and creates two in and out doors), establish a reason to use the portal gun (a mad computer wants to test you and then kill you) and then let you experiment away. Yeah, so simple nobody else had come up with Portal.
The game was a huge hit and catapuled its designer, Kim Swift, into rock star status within the game industry. Swift went on to work on two more Valve games, Left 4 Dead and its recently released sequel, both of which also enjoy high accolades and sales. But in an unexpected move, the game designer has decided to leave her position at Value and join ship at Airtight Games, the developer working on Dark Void.
Airtight isn't mentioning any specifics on

Jedward have gone. So can the combined forces of Olly, Stacey, Joe, Danyl, Lloyd, and Dannii's hair provide a whole evening of X Factor entertainment?
Preamble
All of last week's X Factor action
In the battle between Olly and the twins there was only ever going to be one winner. And one person who could actually sing. A nation (well, some people at any rate) mourned. But what will an X Factor without John and Edward be like?
But that's not the only query. Did Olly's mum manage to get his washing done? How annoying will Danyl prove this week? Will Cheryl come as Minnie Mouse again? These and other important questions will be answered here, from 8pm, Saturday night, with a results show update on Sunday. See you then. (In the meantime, Stuart Heritage is discussing possibilities for the winner's single. Is Don't Stop Believin' really a good idea?

Spice Girls Heading To The Theatre

Anyone a big Spice Girls fan? Their last British tour saw tickets sell like hot cakes, and now it looks like a West End show is in the works, based on the girl’s journey into super-stardom! It will include all our favourite Spice Girl songs and will likely be along the same lines as the Take That musical, “Never Forget”. But naturally this time, it will be ‘Girl Power’ running the show.
The girls have reportedly decided to name their planned West End musical ‘Viva Forever‘ after their 1998 number one single…..one of their best in my opinion too! The show is allegedly being written by Kim Fuller, who also penned the script to the movie Spiceworld and is the half-sister of the band’s former manager Simon Fuller.
Geri Halliwell has had the biggest involvement so far in the project, and has already decided that she wants to

Peter Kay has said that he is "proud" of his Children In Need single. Kay teamed up with over 100 animated characters for the song, which was performed for the first time on Children In Need last night. The comedian voices his alter ego, Big Chris from Roary The Racing Car, and is joined by other children's television legends including Bagpuss, Postman Pat and Fireman Sam. The single itself is a medley of songs including 'Never Forget', 'Hey Jude' and 'Jai Ho'. "Children, parents, grandparents - in fact, everybody is going to enjoy this," Kay said. "I can't believe it's come together (more)

"The generation that has passed ... held together the bonds of our society." Thus spoke the archbishop of Canterbury at Westminster Abbey (Silence of the brave, 12 November). Surely, with the death of three old soldiers, the archbishop cannot really believe that "a generation has passed". It is likely that a few women centenarians still living worked in the fields and factories during the Great War. And what about the thousands of us born before 1914 who helped their mothers to keep the home fires burning?

• Lyn Gardner's piece about envying people who are seeing a play for the first time (Critic's notebook, 11 November) reminded me of a recent visit to see Jude Law play Hamlet at Wyndham's Theatre. When Gertrude reached to drink from the poisoned cup there was an audible and heartfelt gasp of, "Oh no!" from a large number of audience members. I envied all of them.

The only big film festival in my own backyard is back and it runs from November 12th through the 22nd. While it caters more to heavy run fest material and arthouse film, they do have some of the more interesting films playing this year:
Ryan Ward's excellent Son of the Sunshine which is one of my favorite films of the year. (review)
The weird, lengthy comedy The Revenant (review)
Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans
The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus
and much more. Program after the break!
In Competition
Children of Invention
Two first-generation Chinese kids in suburban Boston find themselves on their own after their desperate mother is unwittingly involved in a pyramid scheme and arrested. Older brother Raymond takes a page from her marketing seminars to start creating a life for himself and his sister - casting a strange, pint-sized reflection on the American Dream.

This week's America's Next Top Model episode was full of helpful lessons for life. Not just for models, either. These lessons apply to all of us striving to look our best and most beautiful!
All together now: "Thank You, Tyra!"
Never forget to say those words at least once every day, my dear readers. Every time Tyra's ego isn't validated, a kitten spontaneously bursts into flames. It's in her CW contract. Look it up.
But I digress! Here are Tyra's lessons of the week, courtesy of America's Next Top Model:

Patrick Swayze: 5 Roles That We Will Never Forget

Patrick Swayze died yesterday after a battle with pancreatic cancer at the age of fifty seven. But we all know that actors live on in their work, frozen forever at different stages of their lives and their careers. Some of them, like Swayze, are imprinted on our minds in roles that make them larger than life. That said, we've selected a few of Swayze's most memorable roles... roles that will live on forever.
Dirty Dancing
First and foremost is Swayze as Johnny Castle in 1987’s Dirty Dancing. The role of the guy from the wrong side of the tracks who finds respect and love as a Catskill resort dance instructor and part time lothario put Swayze on the map. The bad boy with the heart of gold who wins the heart of the doctor’s daughter, Baby, made many people sit up and take notice of an actor who’d been working since 1979. Swayze showed off his

Though its not Twilight related September 11th 2001 impacted us all and todays edition of Ta Talks Back tells the story of one persons experience and how even now 8 years later we are still impacted and remembering that day. Not only do we have an awesome article from Becky but she also provided us with a video she made which includes pictures she took on her visit to the site in February of 2002It was 8 years ago. That seems...wrong. That these unimaginable events happened at all is...well...unimaginable. But to think this much time has past since that day in 2001 seems unreal. To me it still feels like this happened only yesterday. I can clearly see the images of the attacks in my head as if I were watching the newscasts right now. It

It’s been relatively quiet lately on the mondotees print front but they’re back with a few sweet items to wet your collector’s needs. First up is the T-Shirt that originally Nakatomi Inc released, Never Forget VHS T-Shirt that I posted about a few months ago. This has now a permanent home over at Mondotees and you can show your love for the olden days by picking up one of these. They come in old school VHS clam shells and in three colors.
For those in the know The Print Mafia is one hot tamale when it comes to collectors prints. They’ve just done a couple of posters for The Alamo for the Roger Corman/Ramones classic Rock N’ Roll High School and strangely the Dolly Parton “classic” 9 To 5. Those go for only 20 bucks so that’s not allot for a genuine hand printed Pm poster.

Kate Moss is planning a birthday party she will "never forget." The British supermodel - who is dating The Kills rocker Jamie Hince - turns 35 Friday and has asked friends to keep the entire weekend free so they can help her celebrate in style.
A source said: "Kate is planning a birthday she'll never forget and feels 35 is a definitive birthday, a turning point. She's been telling friends she's happy that Jamie is here to celebrate such an important date with her and that it feels so right."
Kate has even asked her ex-partner Jefferson Hack to cut short a holiday to ensure he is available to care for their six-year-old daughter Lila Grace.
The source added: "Kate didn't want her nanny Mary Davidson to spend the entire weekend working, so she negotiated with Jefferson to make sure he would return in time to look after Lila. Kate will then

Mondotees top dog Tim Doyle gave me the heads up that he and a bunch of poster designing hooligans formed a group focusing on creating kick ass pop art on T-shirts and prints. The crew is called Nakatomi Inc. and one of the first thing they did was to commemorate the death of VHS (which ceased production last month) with a memorial T-shirt called “Never Forget” And forget we shouldn’t, especially with this shirt.
VHS should never be forgotten as it started the home video boom and brought many if not all of us to the place we are now as film buffs and collectors. I still have a bunch of tapes and still pick up titles that are yet unavailable on DVD when I see them at flea markets and sometimes I buy them for the cover art alone.
The T-shirt comes in a old VHS clamshell with
