Matt Singer: We entered 2009 with a new president who promised to bring our country hope. But looking back at the year in film, I don't see a lot of hope; I see a lot of grief and despair. Oh sure, the box office charts were dominated by your now-typical assortment of franchises, spin-offs, reboots and sequels -- a major cause of grief and despair for some -- but you also had enough apocalypse movies to fill a book on Biblical prophecy. Even some of the obligatory superheroes got dark: the world (spoiler alert!) doesn't end in "Watchmen," but it comes awfully close.
There was an air of doom in certain quarters of the film industry this year too, as the effects of the bad economy rippled through everything from festival attendance to the shriveling ranks of working film critics. Examining my own list of the year's best, I find that

Who Will Lead Female Filmmakers to Parity—Nora Ephron, Nancy Meyers, or Kathryn Bigelow?

What do we talk about when we talk about female filmmakers? In the cover story of this weekend’s New York Times Magazine, titled “Can Anybody Make a Movie for Women?” Daphne Merkin profiles writer/director Nancy Meyers, whose latest cinematic effort, It’s Complicated, opens on Christmas Day and is considered a contender for a best supporting actor Oscar nomination. (Its two supporting male players, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin, are also co-hosting the awards). Merkin devotes much of her nearly 8,000 word piece to analyzing Meyers’s unique triumph in “Hollywood, [where] the glass ceiling is more shatterproof than in many other industries, giving way only when the pressure of accumulated evidence is brought to bear.” Merkin decides that Meyers’ success as a “Hollywood player” is at least partially due to the fact that, “aside from Nora Ephron, it is hard to think of another female director with as recognizable a cinematic imprint as hers,

From MTV.Com: James Cameron has had five wives. Until Tuesday morning (December 15), the director had never found himself competing against one in an awards show. All that changed when the Golden Globe nominations were announced and both Cameron ("Avatar") and his ex Kathryn Bigelow ("The Hurt Locker") were recognized in the Best Director category.
Cameron produced Bigelow's 1991 thriller "Point Break," but the couple divorced shortly after Cameron finished filming "Terminator 2: Judgment Day." The exes remain friends. In fact, they've continued to work together after their marriage fell apart. Bigelow directed "Strange Days" in 1995, a film Cameron wrote and produced.

It's hard to imagine a film-maker more macho than Kathryn Bigelow. From the male-bonding, surf'n'turf action of Point Break to the virtual-reality head-fuck of Strange Days, her films ooze testosterone in quantities which would shame Sam Peckinpah. In The Hurt Locker (pictured, 2008, 15, Lionsgate/Optimum), Bigelow reconfirms her status as the high priest(ess) of muscular sweat-shop chic, delivering an edge-of-your seat bomb-disposal thriller which both explores and celebrates the self-destructive nihilism of its military antiheroes.
While "name" stars like Guy Pearce are swiftly dispatched to the sidelines, relative newcomer Jeremy Renner dominates the screen as the clinical yet gung-ho explosives expert who may be insane or invincible – or both. Rushing in where angels fear to tread, Staff Sgt James seeks out life-threatening confrontations, Bigelow's camera trapping us within his claustrophobic body-armour, his breath so heavy we can almost feel it upon our necks. Oh sure, there's a Nietzschean metaphor ("war

'Dhoom' (2004)
Starring Abhishek Bachchan, John Abraham, Uday Chopra, Esha Deol, Rimi Sen
'Dhoom' is a classic cops-and-robbers movie slicked-up for modern audiences and jam-packed with speed and flash. The action dazzles, but the characters drive the story.
Workaholic police detective Jai Dixit (Abhishek Bachchan) is after a motorcycle gang of robbers in Mumbai. Jai is so determined to rid the city of the bad guys that he neglects his eye-popping wife Sweety (Rimi Sen), who wears next to nothing while doing housework in order to get his attention. But her efforts are for naught—she ends up alone in her negligee when duty calls him away. The frustrated-housewife routine and ball-and-chain jokes may be old, but they're groaningly funny nonetheless.
Because the thieves are expert motorcyclists and their bikes are high-end, souped-up machines, Jai forces Ali (Uday Chopra), a mechanic who fences stolen bikes, to help

When you've glutted yourself on Turkey, must take a break from New Moon reportage, and want to get busy with the Oscar race, it's time to turn the writing work over to the celebs. Both Variety and Entertainment Weekly handed the pens over to the stars recently for two very different reasons -- one, to remember stars we've lost this year like Patrick Swayze, and two, to highlight Academy Award hopefuls in the ever-increasing Oscar race.
Of course, EW wants you to buy the mag, so they're only including one of the movie tributes online, and that's C. Thomas Howell writing about his memories of working with Swayze. The two worked together on The Outsiders all those years ago, and Howell writes: "The one thing that was great about him was also the most irritating fact about him: He was always somehow better than you, no matter what it was you were doing.

Peter Iliff Writing American Gladiators Movie

I’ll admit it. When I was a kid, I liked watching American Gladiators. Heck, I even made up my own version of The Eliminator to run through on the playground at school. Does that mean I think American Gladiators should be turned into a movie? Not in the slightest. Nevertheless, according to Variety, that’s just what’s going to happen.
We’ve known about the possibility of an American Gladiators movie since May, but now we know the details. According to the Variety article, screenwriter Peter Illiff, of Point Break fame, is drafting a script for the film which will “feature the Herculean characters as superheroes.” Joining Illiff on the project is producer Scott Mednick (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) and the original creator of American Gladiators, Johnny Ferraro.
As unappealing as an American Gladiators-inspired movie sounds, there is some potential for the story. I’m intrigued by

Writer Challenged by American Gladiator Movie

A screenwriter has signed for the impossible task of bringing TV’s “American Gladiators” to the big screen.
Peter Iliff (Varsity Blues, Point Break) believes he’s man enough to take on the adaptation. “Gladiators” creator Johnny Ferraro is producing with the help of Scott Mednick (who is also reviving the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles).
Variety reports the story will center on the Gladiators as superheroes, which is news to me because I was certain Nitro was some sort of modern-day Hercules. Now I find out he’s just a muscle-bound actor and my memories are tarnished. This is just like last year when I found out Michelle from “Full House” somehow grew into twin skeletons. Next you’re going to tell me reality television is staged.
When the project was originally announced in May 2009, Ferraro saw it as a “compelling story” that would introduce a new set of characters.

Back in May, the news was out that American Gladiators was getting a big-screen edition. At the time, I, and many of you readers, mocked the idea of turning the TV show, in which amateur athletes battled the arena's best, into a full-length fictional tale.
Well, things just got weirder.
Peter Illif (Point Break) has just been brought on board to write the script and, according to Variety, the story will focus on the Gladiators being superheroes. This seems to match producer Scott Mednick's comment that he looked forward "to creating a compelling story that launches a whole new set of characters."
Unfortunately, I find it hard to believe that anyone can weave gold out of American Gladiators. What do you guys think?

From Movies Blog : As long as Hollywood is turning board games into movies, why not also mine game shows? I'd love to see movies made out of "Press Your Luck" and that Japanese show where contestants had to guess what dangerous animal was atop their head. In a way, "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" has already been turned into a movie ("Slumdog Millionaire"), and now a producer of "300" is bringing "American Gladiators" to the big screen.
Scott Mednick, also an executive producer of this fall's "Where the Wild Things Are," has hired "Point Break" screenwriter Peter Iliff to script the previously announced adaptation of the physical competition series as a movie that, Variety says, will "feature the Herculean characters as superheroes." But will amateur athletes be cast as the villains? It would certainly be appropriate to the format of the show, which involved everyday contenders battling the gigantic

In a time when studios are making movies based on board games, does it shock anyone that a big screen version of American Gladiators is in development? It shouldn't, especially when you stop and consider that the Ag movie is capitalizing on Hollywood's last fad, the superhero movie genre. If you were wondering what kind of story an American Gladiators movie would have and if it would try and port over the reality sports gaming competition format to a three-act structure, don't sweat it. For the movie the muscular men and women will be superheroes. I suppose that's an appropriate mode of adaptation considering that the Gladiators have code-names like Dutch, Laser, Ice, Venom, Titan, Siren, Justice, Wolf...whoa, I had to stop myself there! Once you're spouting off their names you just can't stop!
Screenwriter Peter Iliff has been hired to find some way to flesh out the American Gladiators movie.

When you think of American Gladiators, the television game show of sorts from the late-80s and early-90s, I'm not sure that you think about superheroes. Sure, these Herculean characters are big, strong and mustachioed, but none of them have ever possessed any powers that steroids and hours in a gym could not provide.
Not so with the upcoming movie adaptation produced by Scott Mednick (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles). In his vision for an adaptation of the show, which saw a revival in 2008 on NBC, the Gladiators will be portrayed as superheroes. Who we can only assume will save America from something really scary, like terrorism or aliens. Actually, those are the only two things I can think of -- terrorism and aliens, or both. Mark my words.
The news here is that writer Peter Iliff has been hired to write the script. To his credit, Iliff has worked on scripts for films such as Varsity Blues

After the American Gladiators made a huge television comeback on NBC with all new events and red, white and blue clad, muscle-bulging athletes, the next logical step was to somehow adapt it into a feature length motion picture as we reported earlier this year. Now it looks like the project is making some headway as Variety reports screenwriter Peter Iliff, (Point Break, Patriot Games) will write the film based on the television show which first premiered in the late 80's, however the story will see the titular characters as superheroes instead. Just when I thought Hollywood had run the well dry, here comes a drought. Read on!
This is about as ridiculous as it comes. This is an idea that would've been green-lit as a Saturday morning cartoon in the 80s. It's one thing to have the gladiators from the show move onto their own film careers (see Gina Carano,

W. Peter Iliff, the screenwriter whose credits include Varsity Blues and Patriot Games, has been hired to write a film adaptation of the classic TV game show American Gladiators.
The film will be set inside the world of the TV show and it is claimed that it will be "a compelling story that launches a whole new set of characters" with the fascinating prospect of the "Herculean characters as superheroes."
Speculation abounds with suggestions that American Gladiators is going to be in 3D - it appears that one of the production companies behind the film is 3ality Digital. This company's first production was U2 3D and most of the work they do is on 3D movies.
Iliff recently finished scripting Point Break Indo, the sequel to Point Break, the classic 90's extreme sports, heist, police film that he also wrote.
American Gladiators is expected to hit theatres sometime in 2011.
