World's Greatest Dad (2009), now out on DVD, slipped almost unnoticed under the radar upon its release in theaters earlier this year, and that's a shame. A low-budget black comedy written and directed by Bobcat Goldthwait, who also makes a quick cameo, World's Greatest Dad follows Lance Clayton (Robin Williams), a poetry teacher and struggling writer for whom life sucks. He's a single dad with a pretty -- and pretty opportunistic -- girlfriend (Alexie Gilmore) whom he thinks may be cheating on him, and a mega-jerk of a teenage son, Kyle (Daryl Sabara of Spy Kids), no one will buy his writing efforts and his class at school attracts hardly any interested students. More to the point about Kyle, the kid swears like a sailor, causes problems at school, everyone hates him (except his one best friend), and, um, pivotal but disturbing point coming up, he's into autoerotic asphyxiation while masturbating.

Looking back at Robin Williams’s career either for just the last five years or the last decade leaves you feeling pretty underwhelmed. Dotted amongst a landscape of underdeveloped films or mindless and comedy-stricken disasters are small nuggets of gold that gave his fans some modicum of hope to cling to as they awaited the man’s glorious return to the land of decent roles. For awhile, it seemed Robin had sold his soul to some demon of film mediocrity in return for an unending line of awful characters which let him off without ever having to flex his acting muscles. He became a caricature and little more. Is World’s Greatest Dad just another short-lived spark of greatness amidst an ongoing dry spell? Or has Robin Williams finally realized that deeper, reflective roles like his turn in World’s Greatest Dad light the way to getting him back in

When "Shakes The Clown" came out in 1991 I was quite taken with it. It's a genuinely dirty little movie, gross and absurd, set in a surreal world that doesn't really make a lot of sense, but there was a real filmmaker's sensibility at work in the film. I remember telling people about it at the time, and more often than not, as soon as I mentioned the writer/director/star of the film, people would just tune out. "Oh, you mean that guy from the 'Police Academy' films who screams a lot? No. No, thanks." And while I may not have that
