This new DVD of _Silence of the Lambs, The (1991)_ has been mastered from a new HD transfer.
The film master used is mostly clean and also steady.
Color and contrast rendition are very good. The blacks are occasionally somewhat noisy and lack purity.
Images are sharp except for the occasional soft shot. The noise and grain level is pretty low.
Compression could be better. The over 90 minutes of supplements drain enough bits to create some compression problems at times. They should have gone onto a second disc.
Concerning video artifacts we are faced with edge enhancement that creates distracting white outlines at times. Minor noise reduction artifacts are visible on some occasions as well.
Overall this is a rather solid disc from MGM and the best version of the film so far. Minor problems are noticeable on high quality displays preventing the DVD from reaching a top score.
There are plenty of supplements for consolation, including 22 deleted bits, shots and whole scenes. The deleted material is not color or contrast corrected, lacks sharpness, has sometimes severe digital video dropouts and the last few examples have sound out of synch with the picture by several seconds! To put it differently, quality is mediocre to very poor.
