Avatar Sets December Box Office Record

The weekend’s nearly over and the estimates for James Cameron’s Avatar are in. We’re looking at a $73 million domestic opening and just over $159 million worldwide bring its town debut gross at over $232 million.
Are these good or bad? Well, fans of the industry should be happy to know that this is the largest opening ever for an original film not based on an existing property (novel, short story) or film (sequel, remake) – so that’s always a win. It beat out Lord of the Rings: Return of the King for best December opening but is still second to I am Legend. It’s also James Cameron’s biggest debut and I think Terminator 2, Aliens and Titantic were decent hits looking back on things…
That being said, some forecasts expected a domestic gross of mid to high-eighties so it fell short on that front with some blame being

Weekend Box Office: Animated Aliens Make Cameron Rich

This weekend was full of anticipation. Some were wondering how good James Cameron's Avatar was going to be. Others were just wondering how many people were going to turn out to see it. As a sci-fi movie chock full of giant, blue animated aliens there was some doubt as to whether the masses would open their minds, and their wallets to give it a chance.
Not only was it number one with a bang, Avatar's $73 million weekend debut was the largest ever for a Cameron helmed flick, beating out the $31 million for the rated-r Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Assuming this weekend's estimates hold, it will also mark the second largest-ever December opening, just beating out The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King's $72.6 million. I Am Legend holds the top December debut spot with the $77 million it banked last two years ago.

Review: 'Avatar': The rumors are true, this movie is visually stunning

Easily one of the most hyped movies of the decade, James Cameron's Avatar is supposed to be a benchmark of innovation and special effects. It's supposed to be the movie that changes film forever, so the big question on everyone's mind is, is Avatar the heralded "game changer" that will set the bar for future effects-driven fare? Does it meet all those lofty expectations? Yes...to a point. Avatar is visually the most stunning film seen for quite some time and possibly ever. Thinking back to past films with groundbreaking effects, I find a fistful of James Cameron films like The Terminator, The Abyss and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, along with sporadic George Lucas features, which were all equally filmed in Real 3D (the cameras used on this production were specially designed). Cameron's Avatar mostly avoids 3D tricks like rolling logs towards audiences, spears thrown at you and lots

Zoe Saldana's 'Avatar' Role Is Simply The Latest Of James Cameron's Powerful Leading Ladies

As Neytiri, the Na'vi warrior woman that forges a bond with paraplegic marine Jake Sully in "Avatar," Zoe Saldana is the latest actress to transform herself into a powerful heroine at the hands of director James Cameron.
In fact, if there's one thing that Cameron excels at — other than groundbreaking visual effects, awe-inspiring stories and epically orchestrated action sequences, of course — it's his development of strong female characters.
While Neytiri is certainly one such character, she is merely the latest in a long line of brilliantly crafted women in Cameron's films. Here are some of the others. (click the image above the text to check out our James Cameron Heroines flipbook gallery!)
Ellen Ripley
Although not created by Cameron, the filmmaker took Sigourney Weaver's character of Ellen Ripley to new heights in "Aliens," the action-packed sequel to Ridley Scott's claustrophobic thriller, "Alien." Ripley went from being the survivor

'Avatar' Is A Giant Leap For Effects, Just Like Madonna, Michael Jackson And Korn

After years of hype and hundreds of millions of dollars spent, "Avatar" has finally hit theaters. The early buzz has been excellent, which bodes well for James Cameron's futuristic sci-fi allegory that takes place on a distant planet called Pandora. The film stars Sam Worthington as a paraplegic marine who goes on a special mission to the planet and finds his loyalties divided between science and the military.
But when you get right down to it, the story of "Avatar" is hardly the point. Cameron spent gobs of money on the look and effects of the film, most notably the blue, dreadlocked alien race called the Na'vi. When you include the intense battle sequences and the 3-D visuals, it adds up to one of the most jaw-dropping effects-based spectacles in cinema history.
"Avatar" is one of those ground-breaking moments, an event where the technology takes a giant leap forward and the game changes forever.

Cameron: 'Terminator: Salvation Needed Schwarzenegger'

The Terminator creator James Cameron has criticised the recent sequel, insisting the new movie didn't feel "authentic" because Arnold Schwarzenegger wasn't in it.
Cameron wrote and directed the original 1984 movie which starred Schwarzenegger as a futuristic robot sent back in time, and returned to direct Terminator 2: Judgment Day in 1992.
The moviemaker sat out the third movie Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines in 2003 and had no involvement with the most recent installment, this year's Terminator: Salvation.
Cameron admits the director, McG, did a good job reworking the story - but felt the movie was a disappointment without Schwarzenegger, who only made a brief cameo appearance in the new film.
He tells Ugo.com, "Interestingly, I think McG did a good job. I think he was almost too referential to the myths of the first and second film. He over-quoted them in a way. It didn't feel to me to be enough of a reinvention. The thing we did with the second film is that we reinvented the first film completely; spun it on its a** and made the Terminator the good guy, and came up with a whole new concept for a villain, it felt fresh.
"I didn't feel the fourth picture was fresh enough. It also lacked a certain stamp of authenticity because Arnold wasn't in it. I mean, he was in it briefly, digitally, but that's not the same thing."

There was reason to worry. What on earth was taking James Cameron so long anyway? It's been twelve years since Titanic, weighted down with Oscars and cash, sank into the ocean. For nearly a decade it looked like the reliable blockbuster director might never come back up for air. Was Titanic just too daunting to follow up? But, just as the negative buzz prior to Titanic's release evaporated when people actually saw the great big movie, Avatar dispels any doubts within minutes. The old saying "if you rest, you rust" does not apply to James Cameron. He may have spent years geekily perfecting yet more groundbreaking cinematic technology but thankfully he didn't lose his love of fierce women, action sequences laced with emotion or his storytelling instincts in the process.
Avatar bombards you with backstory in its opening scenes but it's never weighed down by all the fantastical exposition

James Cameron “Reviews” Terminator Salvation

With James Cameron’s mammoth sci-fi motion-capture 3D epic, Avatar, opening in most markets tomorrow (December 18th), I thought it’d be interesting to share Cameron’s thoughts on Terminator Salvation, the fourth installment in a franchise he made legendary with The Terminator and T2: Judgement Day in the ’80s and early ’90s.
Jordan Hoffman over at Ugo managed to get some “quality one-to-one time” with the legendary Mr. Cameron. During their “b.s.-free” conversation, Cameron revealed his thoughts on McG’s take on the Terminator franchise. Obviously, as Hoffman points out, Cameron has been a busy man, though he still managed to catch the fourth Terminator installment. Here’s Cameron’s “review” of it:
“It probably didn’t get a fair day in court because I had to watch it at night when I got home from work, over a period of two or three nights. I

Avatar: Classic Disney for the Digital Age

[This Article is Spoiler-free]
I making this statement because I truly believe it: Avatar is a classic Disney-esque adventure as imagined by James Cameron. In my head, that basically translates to “A cliched but endearing tale-for-the-ages, with claws, fangs and lots of big guns.”
In the next few days, weeks (maybe even months) you’re going to be hearing all about what Avatar is and is not (check out our own official review Here). You’ll hear the debate about whether it has lived up to the hype, whether the film has truly changed the CGI face of movies (it has) and whether the film is all that it could’ve been.
As far as that latter question goes, read on if you want to hear my breakdown.
The critical response to Avatar has generally been positive, if not similar: visually, the film is a spectacle that no movie-loving person should miss. You should

For months now, the world has been inundated with how “ground breaking” and “revolutionary” James Cameron’s return to the big screen is going to be with Avatar. With giant budgets, giant egos and enough CGI to make George Lucas say “That’s too much,” Avatar is being praised by critics and bloggers alike (which is kind of freaky that they actually agree on something) for actually living up to the super-ultra hype that has surrounded the film.
There are only a handful of people that have actually seen Avatar in its entirety so a true public opinion is still a day away. For those of us not lucky enough to be on the right list of who’s who, we have only the numerous promo clips, trailers and commercials to base our opinions on.
I’m so torn on this film; the sci-fi, fantasy, action geek inside of me

I firmly believe that one cannot judge a movie on first viewing. I like to review a movie after watching it a second time, after a week of my first viewing, preferably a month later. So may be I should not write this review an hour after seeing Avatar. A second viewing shows me things that I might have missed the first time. I like to form my opinion after several days, but but But... the initial opinion never changes.
I can watch a movie any number of times, but the first impression is, my dear movie aficionados, Always the best impression. So here it is, the first impression. You know the feeling when watching a really great movie, that awesome realisation that you are watching a masterpiece, the fuzzy feeling in your heart that you will be waching this movie again and again with your kids and grandkids?

Since talk of Avatar first began, it has been touted as the kind of groundbreaking cinematic experience that will change the future of filmmaking forever. Whether that is truth or the product of an out of control James Cameron ego has yet to be determined (any psychics out there?), but anyone who has already seen the film or was present for the 15-minute screening on Avatar Day can tell you that it is a step forward.
Avatar pushes computer graphics to the very edge of what's possible, particularly in IMAX 3D. Cameron's no stranger to game-changing special effects, with The Abyss he had a hand in creating first fully digital 3D water effect, in Terminator 2: Judgment Day he had the first CGI human character with realistic movement, and in Titanic he used the advanced the rendering of flowing water. Avatar may be another step, but before we take it,

James Cameron gives verdict on McG's Terminator Salvation

Avatar director James Cameron was also the man behind the first two Terminator films, in 1984 and 1991, which are regarded by many fans as the strongest in the series.
Cameron directed and co-wrote both releases, which were followed by Jonathan Mostow's Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines in 2003 and then this year by McG's power-packed, post-apocalyptic Terminator Salvation.
In the Total Film supplement King of the World: The Complete Works of James Cameron, there is an interview in which Cameron was asked what he thought of Terminator Salvation.
He responded: "It didn't quite have the emotional power that it should have had. I thought Sam Worthington was great, very powerful, and Christian Bale...people have criticised him for being one-note but that's part of the character.
"He was playing a guy who's furiously dedicated to the survival of the human species. Maybe more could have been done with that.

James Cameron has always, honestly, made me go "wow". Watching from behind a cushion as Arnie popped his ruined eyeball into sink, grinning from ear to ear every time I watched Ripley fight the Alien queen sometime around 3am on channel 4 for the 3,000th time or seeing T1000's metallic bullet wounds heal over and that little smile curl his lips. Yet, oddly and as much as I love those films, there's always been something in the way James Cameron put his ideas on the screen recently that makes the movie itself somehow seem like it comes in with a second place trophy, just losing out to the technology that helped make it.
Cameron's Avatar introduces us to paraplegic marine, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington, once again fighting his Aussie accent every step of the way) as he scores a trip to replace his brilliant scientist brother (may he rest in

We are on the cusp of the debut of one of Hollywood’s most anticipated releases in years, James Cameron’s Avatar. With concern about being the “most expensive movie in feature film history” and its likening to the wars overseas (essentially a movie-inspired take on the conquest of big oil over the small but feisty, native inhabitants of “Pandora”), there is a lot for Avatar and James Cameron to overcome even before its official release. Like most things however, one can find many potential answers from a review of the previous history of just about anything. Whether it’s the potential of a person to pay back money they might receive or the value to be reaped from a multi-million dollar blockbuster, answers can be found in what’s come before.
We’ll take a look at the movie history of director James Cameron to showcase how they succeeded,

Everyone in Hollywood just wants to direct, but when it comes to visual effects artists becoming full-fledged filmmakers, the results aren't always great. Among those who've made the transition, for better or worse, are Joe Johnston (Jurassic Park III), Eric Brevig (Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D), Colin and Greg Strause (Aliens vs. Predator - Requiem) and Neil Blomkamp (District 9).
Joining them now is Dean Wright, Oscar-nominated for effects work on The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and a veteran artist who had a hand in Titanic, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Kangaroo Jack and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Wright, who got some of his directing experience handling the second unit filming for The Return of the King, is already at work on a Jesus biopic called Kingdom Come, slated for release in 2010. And now, according to Variety, he's already set up his follow-up,
