Sarandon Lands Lifetime Achievement Award

23 November 2009 8:16 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Oscar winner Susan Sarandon was the toast of the Stockholm International Film Festival in Sweden on Saturday when she was honoured for her longrunning movie career.

The Hollywood actress, 63, was presented with the lifetime achievement prize, a bronze horse statuette weighing a hefty 15 pounds (7.3 kilograms), by Swedish actor Gustaf Hammarsten.

Paying tribute to the Thelma and Louise star, Hammarsten said, "The roles Susan Sarandon has played often gain a life of their own beyond the films themselves.

"Reflection, seduction and rebellion animate her characters and seem to be the key tools in her actor's repertoire."

Accepting the award, Sarandon vowed to continue working for as long as possible.

She told the audience, "I am very happy that I'm still working, that I'm able to get jobs when a lot of people that I started out with are no longer working. I still have a really good time, and as long as that continues I'll continue to do it."

French director Luc Besson is also set to be honoured at the annual event, which runs until 29 November. »

Jessica Manafort to direct 'Thelma and Louise' remake called 'Cowgirl Bandits'. Sadly.

22 October 2009 11:22 AM, PDT | Pretty/Scary | See recent pretty-scary news »

The bland and forgettable, but completely typical 'young woman' Leighton Meester (Gossip Girl) and the far more interesting Amber Heard (All The Boys Love Mandy Lane) are set to star in a remake of the feminist (actually, anti-feminist) 1991 movie Thelma And Louise which starred Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis as two out-of-their-effing-minds women on the run from the law because evil men had opressed them.

But hold on. Jessica Manafort is attached to direct. But hold on again. It will be called Cowgirl Bandits. Whose effing name is 'Leighton', anyway? I know what this is. This is a younger, hipper version of the film, because who wants to look at women over 30? Not men, that's who not!...

Heard starred in Manafort's 2007 comedy Remember the Daze, which Manafort also wrote, revolved around the relationship dynamics of a group of suburban teens on the last day of school in 1999. Yay women director. »

Sarandon And Besson Land Stockholm Film Festival Honours

21 October 2009 12:06 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Hollywood actress Susan Sarandon and French filmmaker Luc Besson are due to accept high honours at the Stockholm Film Festival in Sweden next month.

Sarandon, 63, will receive the lifetime achievement award at the event - with organisers hailing the star for the "reflection, seduction and rebellion" she has portrayed on the big screen throughout her career.

Her most famous roles include rebellious waitress Louise in 1991's Thelma and Louise and her Oscar-winning performance as Sister Helen in 1995 film Dead Man Walking.

Meanwhile, The Fifth Element director Besson, 50, has landed the festival's visionary award for his "relentless" exploration of film.

The 20th Stockholm International Film Festival will take place from 18 to 29 November. »

The Cowgirl Bandits: Amber Heard and Leighton Meester

17 October 2009 12:02 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

It looks like we're getting a newish Thelma & Louise. Over at Production Weekly's wonderfully brief Twitter feed, they report: "Amber Heard & Leighton Meester attached to star in Cowgirl Bandits a young version of Thelma & Louise, with Jessica Manafort to direct." Manafort has worked with both actresses before on her 2007 film, The Beautiful Ordinary, which focused on teens and their last day of high school. But this is a whole different corral.

Personally, I'm wondering if these are just some slow-moving bandits. Back in March of 2007, we learned about a new project called The Uncatchable Cowgirl Bandits of Nottingham, Texas. The film was said to zero in on some cowgirls who are also bank robbers. But they don't rob just any bank -- they "steal from a number of branches of a bank that are threatening their community and corrupting town leaders." Pw has since confirmed that this is the same movie, »

Buzz Break: No Catchphrase Necessary

16 October 2009 1:45 PM, PDT | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

· The Simpsons is holding a contest where a viewer-submitted character can appear in an upcoming episode opposite Chris Martin of Coldplay. Coincidentally, this is how Seth MacFarlane developed Family Guy.

· Amber Heard and Leighton Meester are teaming up for Cowgirl Bandits, which is being described as a young Thelma and Louise. I imagine they'll have to pick up young Brad Pitt at the local junior high.

· Nicolas Cage is suing his business manager for "catastrophic losses," and seeking $20 million in reparations.

· Did your jaw drop and your eyes bug out (accompanied by an "Awoooga" train whistle) while viewing the possibly-Photoshopped GQ cover of a busty January Jones? Well, assures GQ, "They're real and they're spectacular."

· The new Celebrity Apprentice will feature Cyndi Lauper, Bret Michaels, Sharon Osbourne, and Rod Blagojevich. All of them trash, dahling. Trash! »

Leighton Meester, Amber Heard 'Cowgirl' Up

16 October 2009 12:06 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

I can think of two great reasons to watch a movie starring Amber Heard and Leighton Meester. One is Amber Heard, and you can finish the equation yourself. Production Weekly Tweets that the pair of twentysomething starlets will appear in what's being described as a "young version of Thelma and Louise."

The flick is called Cowgirl Bandits, directed by up-and-comer Jessica Manafort. At present, there's no IMDb listing for anything called Cowgirl Bandits, although there's an in-development project with the much cooler title The Uncatchable Cowgirl Bandits of Nottingham, Texas. Heard being a Texan, perhaps these productions are one and the same. »

Leighton Meester And Amber Heard Are Cowgirl Bandits

16 October 2009 10:45 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

When you hear "a young version of Thelma and Louise," shouldn't you just think of the original, actual Thelma and Louise? First of all, Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon weren't exactly over the hill in that movie, and second, it's a classic that shouldn't be messed with. Period. But of course, that's never the end of anything. According to Production Weekly, Amber Heard and Leighton Meester will be starring in Cowgirl Bandits, a, yes, "young version of Thelma and Louise." Jess Manafort, who previously directed Heard in a movie I have never heard of, The Beautiful Ordinary, will direct her in this one as well. It sounds like it's not actually a remake of Thelma and Louise, just a story about women traveling around and doing illegal stuff, which therefore means it must be compared to the first movie. It's hard to get away with calling yourself a new Thelma »

What if William Baldwin Never Left 'Thelma & Louise'?

28 September 2009 2:15 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Brad Pitt had a whole lot of gigs before he nabbed his career-propulsioning role in Thelma & Louise -- from an uncredited preppie kid in Less Than Zero, to the soap opera wonder of Another World and Dallas, to sitcoms like Growing Pains. He's an actor whose notoriety rose with his talents -- he paid his dues and worked his way up from goofy commercial gigs shilling Pringles to big-screen success. But what if he never got to play with Thelma and Louise?

See, Pitt was the third choice for the role. According to IMDb, William Baldwin was the first choice, but he gave it up to star in Backdraft. (George Clooney also lobbied hard for the gig.) The choice makes sense. Why play some bit part when you can star in a Ron Howard flick with Kurt Russell, Robert De Niro, and Donald Sutherland? If only the sensible always made sense. »

Critics Split By Gender On Jennifer’s Body

21 September 2009 5:00 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

So the Megan “hot Transformers chick” Fox-starring, Diablo “I wrote Juno” Cody-written movie Jennifer’s Body opened this weekend to rather weak box office (the estimate at the moment is less than $7 million). As I write this article the film is scoring 41% positive rating on the Tomatometer over at RottenTomatoes.com with 99 reviews so far. While that is certainly not a good score, it’s far from that of some recent stinkers (Final Destination: 27%, All About Steve: 6%, Sorority Row: 26%).

What prompted this article however was what I was seeing on Twitter as far as comments about the film… women seemed to be praising it while guys (myself included) were slamming it. So I decided to do an informal (and very crude) statistical analysis - overall what did male movie critics think about the film as opposed to female reviewers?

There were many more reviews by men (77) than »

Pitt Considers Movie Future

4 August 2009 1:01 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Brad Pitt has hinted he is ready to retire from making movies - because he thinks most Hollywood roles are geared towards younger actors.

The 45 year old has been acting for over two decades and has enjoyed box office success in films including Thelma and Louise, Fight Club and Ocean's Eleven.

He's also won several accolades during his 22-year long career, including the Best Supporting Actor Golden Globe for his turn in 1995's Twelve Monkeys.

But Pitt is now ready to step away from the spotlight after achieving everything he set out to do.

He says, "I think acting is a younger man's game. There are fewer interesting parts for older people and we all get older. But I feel like I've done it. I've kind of had my time and that's quite freeing.

"There are still acting dreams left but I'll do them first and then we'll talk about them." »

Susan Sarandon is the unlikely celebrity who will open a New York table tennis bar, called Spin New York.

The Thelma & Louise star will launch the new place in June and she's very excited about her passion for ping pong.

She says, "There are a lot of tables, Olympic tables, Olympic lighting and it's a bar." »
