In the fantasy world, you are lead to believe that Bobby did fly away in the Radio Flyer to escape the clutches of the King. But, in reality, Bobby crashed into trees near the airport and just ran away, leaving Sampson the turtle behind. If you recall, at the end of the film, Tom Hank's son asked him "Is that where we got Sampson?". "Yes. That is exactly how we got him." replied Hanks. Also, when Mike said that he saw Bobby flying over the airport. We, the audience, can not see him because he is not really flying. The entire flying business after the take-off was purely meant to represent a child's fantasy world where everything goes as they imagine it.

Bobby did however, run away, but he ran away on foot until he reached Jeronomo Bill's Wild West Adventure. He then traveled around the world, visiting different locations, and eventually became a real flyer when he grew up. The entire Radio Flyer construction was real, but in reality, Bobby did not fly away. It was all in their imagination.

What happens to The King?

Following the take-off of Bobby in the Radio Flyer on the highest part of the Wishing Spot, Officer Tardy and the mother discover the father (The King) lying on the ground, half-conscious and highly drunk. Officer Tardy places the hand-cuffs on him, saying "Your done." You are lead to believe that The King will finally go to prison for a very long time, if not for life.
