Universal wanted to market the film as a stand-alone feature for audiences who had not seen Evil Dead I or II which is also the reason for the prologue. There were also changes in the franchise's' rights holders so the name "Evil Dead" could not be used anyway which is also why the prologue is re-shot footage and not simply lifted from Evil Dead II. Sam Raimi as a result used the subheading, "The Medieval Dead".
