Storyline

Batman, the costumed crime-fighter who prowls the night skies in Gotham City, soon finds there's another vigilante in town knocking off prominent mob figures. Despite the scythe-like blade for a hand, a mechanical voice and the cloud of smoke that follows the figure wherever it goes, the police and outraged officials mistake the homicidal crusader for Batman himself and demand that the city's longtime hero be brought to justice. Meanwhile, Andrea Beaumont returns to town. She is the lost love of Bruce Wayne, the billionaire playboy who is Batman's alter ego, and was an integral part of Wayne's decision ten years earlier to don the cape and cowl. Now, she is back in his life and is no less a disruption than the return of his old archenemy, The Joker, who has a stake in seeing the annihilation of this new vigilante, whoever it proves to be. Trivia

Andrea Beaumont is based loosely on a combination of Judson Caspian (the Reaper) and his daughter Rachel Caspian, characters from the "Batman: Year Two" comic book storyline. Andrea was allegedly named after casting and vocal supervisor Andrea Romano, whom star Kevin Conroy occasionally teased. See more »

Goofs

During the opening sequence, the camera pulls back dramatically through the myriad buildings of Gotham City. As this occurs, the camera actually passes through several buildings - a common 3D animation problem when rendering. As a result, a few buildings "pop" into view out of nowhere. See more »

Quotes

Andrea Beaumont: You're not smiling, Joker. I thought you found death amusing.
The Joker: Oh, me? You won't hear a giggle out of me.

The psychological, the subtle, and the emotional side of Bruce Wayne are all more deeply looked at in this fantastic animated movie
14 May 2005 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

Mask of the Phantasm is one the best Batmans movies ever conceived. It gives that dark brooding look of the batman TV show, throws in an amazing original score, excellent voice acting, and a storyline that encourages us to look at the Batman story in a more human and emotional way. We have well established bad guys instead of just having a guy escape from prison, we have strong inner-conflict dilemmas and very well drawn action scenes. The only downside is that it could have been longer, although the rather short (compared to most movies) length does a good job of not making the flow feel dull or boring.

I highly suggest this movie.
