Since Spielberg has pretty much covered World War II with Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers and even Schindler's List, he has decided to focus his attention to World War I. DreamWorks Pictures and Spielberg have acquired the novel War Horse.
DreamWorks Riding War Horse
To be adapted by scribe Lee Hall, War Horse recounts the extraordinary friendship between a boy and a horse who are separated but whose fates continue to be intertwined over the course of Wwi. Though Spielberg is in the market for a new directing gig, he hasn't committed to getting behind the camera for this one (just yet).

Sony Pictures has optioned the rights for an English-language film adaptation of international literary sensation "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" reports the trades.
Steve Zaillian ("American Gangster," "Schindler's List") is in talks to write the script based on the first of the crime thriller novel trilogy by late Swedish journalist-activist Stieg Larsson.
The story follows Mikael Blomqvist, a disgraced journalist and Lisbeth Salander, a bisexual female hacker with Asperger's syndrome who investigate the 40-year-old disappearance of a industrialist's niece on a remote island.
Their investigations uncover religious killings, Nazism, rape, child abuse and murder. The next two novels deal with a conspiracy within the Government dating back to the Cold War. All three books have scored rave critical reviews, especially for the Salander character who's considered one of the most compelling female characters of modern fiction.
Yellow Bird Films produced Swedish-language film adaptations of all three books which scored European release this year.

Blame N.Y. and L.A. film critics: Why 'The Hurt Locker' may be doomed at the Oscars

So far I've received dozens of emails and Facebook messages from fans of "The Hurt Locker" overjoyed that their beloved film won best-picture trophies from both the New York and Los Angeles film critics. "Next stop, the big enchilada at the Oscars!" promises one Gold Derby reader. Um … wait … maybe you should make alternate plans for dinner, dear Derbyites — just in case. Over the past 25 years, eight movies claimed that same double victory. Only one ended up feasting on the top Oscar: "Schindler's List" (1993). All of the others lost best picture at the Oscars after claiming the same kudo from critics on opposite coasts: "Brokeback Mountain" (2005) "Sideways" (2004), "Saving

New York Film Critics name 'Hurt Locker' Best Picture

"The Hurt Locker" is turning into the little film that could. At least with critics that is. Kathryn Bigelow's impressive war thriller has now won both Best Picture awards from the nation's most prestigious critics groups, the Los Angeles Film Critics and the New York Film Critic's Circle. Not an easy feat. The only film to match that accomplishment this decade is "Brokeback Mountain" and only five since 1990 ("Mountain," "Schindler's List," "Leaving Las Vegas," "L.A. Confidential" and "Saving Private Ryan"). Additionally, Mo'Nique, Christoph Waltz and Meryl Streep's wins are cementing their status as frontrunners for Oscar in their respective categories.

Have the L.A. Critics Given Us A New Awards Front-Runner?

By: Erik Childress
Up In The Air got off to a great launch this awards season, but today we have been given a new front runner. Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker has taken top honors from Boston and now the Los Angeles Film Critics. The only film on their list to win multiple awards - a whole two - the Iraq War thriller about bomb-defusing soldiers is now up 11 awards to Up In The Air's and the fast-approaching Inglourious Basterds' 8. Sure, Los Angeles' choice for Best Film hasn't won the Academy Award since 1993's Schindler's List, but we weren't exactly talking about That kind of front-runner.
The L.A. critics have a history of choosing a film with a lot of early awards chatter only to wind up being the second choice, if you will, come Oscar time. Recent selections include Sideways, Brokeback Mountain and There Will Be Blood.

Uh-oh! Have the L.A. critics blasted 'The Hurt Locker's' hope of winning best picture at the Oscars?

There weren't many surprises among the awards proclaimed today by the Los Angeles Film Critics Assn. Most pundits assumed that members would vote either for "The Hurt Locker" or "Up in the Air" as best picture. Lafca ended up picking "The Hurt Locker," giving "Up in the Air" the runner-up spot. That's a bad omen for the hopes of "The Hurt Locker" to win the top Oscar considering Lafca hasn't agreed with academy voters on best picture since "Schindler's List" (1993). Last year, neither the film chosen as the year's best ("Wall-e") nor runner-up ("The Dark Knight") were nominated for best picture. However, usually the top Lafca choices are also leading academy contenders. Surely, Lafca's

Los Angeles Film Critics Also Name 'Hurt Locker' Best of 2009

If history holds true I wouldn't count on The Hurt Locker winning Best Picture at the Oscars considering the last time the Los Angeles Film Critics and the Oscars matched Best Picture winners it was 1993 and Schindler's List. However, my thoughts that Jason Reitman was the current front-runner for Best Director have changed as Kathryn Bigelow has emerged today as what is looking like a sure-fire front-runner after winning with the Boston Critics and Los Angeles Critics. Such an award gives the Academy a chance to honor a female director with the top nod for the first time, and the fact it is truly deserving makes it all the better.
There's a happy surprise in the Best Animated Film category as Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox bests Pixar's Up. I think both are great films, but Fantastic Mr. Fox may end up being my favorite film of the year.

The Los Angeles Film Critic's announced their 2009 Awards today and the choices were full of surprises. Contrary to public opinion, the almost 35-year-old organization is actually more progressive than their New York counterparts and displayed some of that independent spirit in this year's honorees. The complete list of winners with analysis below. Picture: "The Hurt Locker" Runner-up: "Up in the Air" Reaction: Not that surprising, although it effectively kills "Locker's" chances to win the Best Picture Oscar. Lafca and the Academy have not matched up since "Schindler's List" won in 1993. That means Paramount is no doubt celebrating "Up in

A spirited actress, who dead from a head injury on 18 March at the age of 45, remembered by the actor who was her long-term friend
Natasha Richardson was her own unique life force. She possessed a high-wire vitality that took you in its arms, shook you, seduced you and cajoled you into living life without regrets. Friendship was an anchor for her. She thrived on bringing friends together. She created occasions full of affection and joy, moments of celebration that sometimes felt like a magical dance. She mixed lethal cocktails (she loved lychee martinis), cooked extraordinary food, was a spontaneously good nurse, laughed and delighted in stories and anecdotes, and had a mischievous ear for a good scandal. She loved to play music and would impatiently search her iPod for exactly the right track for the moment. And she loved to dance. And she loved to watch a movie with friends.

Francis Ford Coppola's nightmarish vision of the Vietnam war is named best film of the past three decades, beating Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List to the top spot
Apocalypse Now was today named as the best film of the past three decades by the London Film Critics' Circle (Lfcc). Francis Ford Coppola's nightmarish vision of the Vietnam war beat out Steven Spielberg's 1994 holocaust drama Schindler's List to take top spot in the poll, held to celebrate the organisation's 30th anniversary.
Third place went to German film The Lives of Others, Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's Oscar-winner for best foreign language film in 2007. The top five was rounded out by two very different movies with western themes: Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven, from 1992, and Ang Lee's 2005 tale of gay cowboys, Brokeback Mountain.
Chair of the circle and Observer writer Jason Solomons said: "I'm delighted that such a powerful and

Top critics have voted Francis Ford Coppola's war movie Apocalypse Now the best film of the last 30 years.
The 1979 drama, starring Marlon Brando and Martin Sheen, is number one on a new poll celebrating 30 years of the London Film Critics' Circle Awards.
Apocalypse Now, which won Best Film at the inaugural ceremony in 1980, came ahead of Steven Spielberg's Holocaust epic Schindler's List, which was voted second best.
The Critics' Circle, the world's oldest organisation of critics, also recognised The Lives of Others, Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven and Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain, which rounded out the top five respectively.
Chairman of the Film Critics' Circle Jason Solomons says, "I'm delighted that such a powerful and brilliant film as Apocalypse Now has won the enduring admiration of the London critics.
"Coppola's towering film is a worthy winner and clearly its anti-war message, monumental performances and dazzling film-making technique have stood the test of time, making it as relevant to critics today as it was when it won best film at our first awards ceremony 30 years ago."
The 30th annual London Film Critics' Circle Awards will take place on 18 February in the British capital.
