Julie & JuliaCast: Meryl Streep, Amy AdamsDirection: Nora Ephron Rating: *** & 1/2
Over the years, several films — Babette’s Feast, Eat Drink Man Woman, Chocolat — have explored the restorative power of food.
Even though it isn’t as flavourful as those gourmet treats, Julie & Julia has what it takes to make a palatable meal.Adapting not just one but two real-life stories, writer-director Ephron (Sleepless in Seattle) skillfully juggles the dual plotlines revolving around two women from different generations.
In the first, Julia Child (Streep), a middle-aged housewife indulges her culinary passion in late-1940s Paris. Against daun-ting odds, she masters the

My channel surfing turned into movie grazing

I think I'm going to coin a new term. I'm a movie grazer. I like watching TV and grazing in and out of movies that I've seen before, know well, and enjoy watching again in bits and pieces. I know this sounds crazy to some who have to watch a movie from the opening studio logo to the end credits (even as they're being smushed on commercial TV broadcasts).
I'm not like that, though. On Friday, amid the post-Thanksgiving haze and without much interest in the college football games or reruns of CBS soaps or syndicated fare, I was channel surfing. Every time I saw something I liked, I stopped for a while. It was mostly movies. I watch Cary Grant and Sophia Loren in Houseboat, Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks in Sleepless in Seattle, there was a whole bunch of Goodfellas, because Bravo showed it back to back. So I watched the ending first,

• Five-time Oscar nominee Marc Shaiman is returning to the Oscarcast as musical director six years after conducting the orchestra for Billy Crystal's swan song as host. Shaiman earned three of his four Emmy nods for his work on the Oscars, sharing in the 1992 writing win for penning Crystal's opening medley to the 64th edition of the kudos. Shaiman has lost Oscar bids for both scores -- "The American President" (1995); "The First Wives Club" (1996) and "Patch Adams" (1998) -- and songs -- "A Wink and a Smile" from "Sleepless in Seattle" (1993) and "Blame Canada" from "South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut" (1999). Meg Ryan appears to be back on the Hollywood dating scene after she was spotted enjoying a string of romantic dinners with Nip/Tuck star Julian McMahon.
The Sleepless in Seattle actress took a break from romance following the end of her marriage to Dennis Quaid and split from Russell Crowe in 2000, concentrating on raising son Jack Henry and adopted daughter Daisy.
But according to Australia's Herald Sun, she's recently been photographed on several "cosy" dates with Aussie actor McMahon in Los Angeles, sparking rumours she's found love again.
McMahon, who has been divorced twice, was most recently linked to model Kelly Paniagua, but his representative was unable to confirm whether they are still in a relationship.

What's turning me on this week? Women.
Women filmmakers, to be exact. With the limp release of Drew Barrymore's Whip It, there's been an increase of chatter in my circles about lady directors. It's often highly difficult for me to enter into a discussion about women making movies, because the lion's share of cinephiles and critics that I spend my time with are men. No offense, guys. It's just that the conversation often devolves into cheap -- albeit funny -- pot-shots and cat calls about women in front of and behind the camera. I have no problem, on face, with these discussions. They're fun, funny, and occasionally enlightening. But what I really want, what I think would really be worth the breath, is an honest-to-goodness discussion on female filmmakers.
Contemporary cinema would be flat without all types of voices, women's being among the most important. But often women aren't expected to be, or

Megan Fox horror-comedy a big disappointment for all involved.
Bomb of the Week: Jennifer's Body appeared to have a lot going for it: a big marketing push, a strong concept and script (by Juno darling Diablo Cody), and Hollywood's hottest actress (Megan Fox) in the lead. Yet reviews were mixed at best and it averaged just $2500/screen compared with Meatballs' nearly $10K.

There are a few classic films we have come to expect to be amid the top five of many men’s favourite features, among which often sit the usual array of titles – the merits of The Godfather, Scarface, Star Wars and The Matrix having often been discussed over pints and the flipping of burgers on BBQs (we don’t wish to gender-stereotype you understand!) But there is one movie, that isn’t in the vein of these ball-busting action flicks, yet still holds a special place in the hearts of fellas (and plenty of women) the world over, and that’s the weepy tale of brotherhood-bonding The Shawshank Redemption. And we here at Boxwish HQ are very excited to let you know of the stage version’s move from Dublin to our nation’s capital this month. Yes, the Wyndam Theatre in London’s West End premieres its five month

Nora Ephron has made a long and successful career out of making films I don't much care for, and more power to her. Honestly, probably the film she directed that I most liked before this was "This Is My Life," her early '90s debut. Her work before that as a writer, I'm a little more fond of, like "My Blue Heaven" or "When Harry Met Sally" or, most notably, "Heartburn," an affable if not entirely successful film based on her own real life. It's not that I hate her movies... "You've Got Mail" and "Sleepless In Seattle" seem entirely successful at

The summer's almost over, and so far it's been an incredibly mixed bag movie-wise. Star Trek, The Hangover, and Harry Potter are some of the few deserving wins on the box-office side while most of the supposed summer blockbusters including X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Terminator: Salvation, Bruno, and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen all failed to make a financial mark (yeah, that last one was just wishful thinking because the movie sucked so much ass). Quality-wise, many of the summer's best films have actually been of the decidedly smaller variety including 500 Days of Summer, The Hurt Locker, Moon, and Away We Go.
Which brings us to the final month of summer 2009...

I met Armando Muñoz at the Los Angeles Weekend of Horrors after moderating the panel on The Lair. He approached me in the dealer’s room and we had a nice chat. I left with one of his films in hand and was soon watching one of the more twisted shorts I’ve seen in a long time.
A week later I had the complete Armando Muñoz collection in my hands – Killer Krapper, Mime After Midnight, Panty Kill, The Terrible Old Tran, Pervula and They Have No Shame. Each one more twisted than the next.
When I first started writing this blog, I vowed I would write about people and films that I found interesting, regardless of whether or not they were well known. With that in mind, I present should-be-better-known, out, underground filmmaker Armando Muñoz.

One of the most watched YouTube mash-ups of recent times is “Transforminators,” which -- precisely no prizes for guessing -- edits together bits of the two killer-robot franchises.
It’s one of those clever pieces of Diy new-media repurposing that makes you hope the person behind it (a) gets some sunlight occasionally and (b) one day lands a paying gig as an editor.

Columbia Pictures Julie & Julia is the new feature from writer/director Nora "Sleepless In Seattle" Ephron, depicting events in the life of famed real-life chef 'Julia Child'.
Ephron's screenplay is adapted from the Child's autobiography, My Life in France (written with Alex Prud'homme) and a memoir by Julie Powell.
In August 2002, Powell started documenting online her daily experiences cooking each of the 524 recipes in Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking and she later began reworking that blog, The Julie/Julia Project into the 2005 novel Julie & Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen.
The book was retitled for a 2006 paperback edition as Julie & Julia: My Year of Cooking Dangerously.
Noted as the first major motion picture based on a 'blog', actress Meryl Streep portrays 'Julia Child' and Amy Adams plays 'Julie Powell'.
