The film follows Sam Baldwin (Tom Hanks) a man who has lost his wife to cancer and is trying to get back into the world of dating so he moves to Seattle with his son to try and make a fresh start. He tries to date a number of women but his son, Jonah (Ross Malinger) has other plans. One night while Sam is out on a date, Jonah phones into a radio talk show and discusses how his dad is not properly happy with anyone. Sam comes home and is persuaded to go on air with his son and talk about how much he misses his wife. The radio show goes out to people all over the country and almost all the women who hear it are upset and try to contact Sam. However there is one woman, Annie Reed, (Meg Ryan) who is touched by Sams emotional speech and writes to him. Sam thinks is it just ridiculous but Jonah is convinced that she is the one for his dad so Jonah writes back saying that he would love to meet her in New York at the top of the Empire State building on Valentines day like in the film, ' An Affair to Remember '. Still Sam thinks it is just another love-hungry woman and ignores it. Jonah, out of spite, travels to New York without his dad and goes to try and meet her at the top of the Empire State building. Sam, who has now found out that Jonah has left to go to New York, rushes to catch up with him and flies to New York. Annie is also having a hard time as she is at this point breaking up with her fiancee and then goes to the Empire State building where she is too late to get Jonah and Sam as they have just left the building. But at the end of the film Jonah left his backpack at the top of the Empire State building and rushes back to get it and as they arrive at the top Annie is standing there and Sam and Annie finally meet. The film ends with the two of them linking arms as they walk away from the building showing that the film has a happy ending.
