Constable Maggie Doyle arrived in Mount Thomas as the first policewoman at the precinct and her first foray in her job brings her into conflict with her boss, Sr. Sgt. Tom Croydon, after she kills an attacking dog belonging to a Mount Thomas citizen.

Duck hunting season hits Mount Thomas which incurs the wrath of local school-teacher Brian Shields who is anti-guns. The following day Brian is found dead and suspicion falls on the city duck hunters that he had an altercation with. His wife tells them that he committed suicide as he had terminal cancer but Maggie doesn't believe her story. Did his wife kill him? Meanwhile, Roz buys a new car for her hair & beauty salon business but she neglects the cleaning of the station which doesn't please Tom.

However, later she realizes that one of her beauty clients unknowingly is a recipient of stolen jewelry from the B&E and wonders whether to tell Wayne. Meanwhile, Nick arrests a man who he believes is drunk and who promptly hits Nick but PJ recognizes him as famed hostage negotiator Jack 'Blackjack' Eagan and which makes him curious as to why he's in Mount Thomas.

The annual Mount Thomas Cup and Picnic Day brings with it a lot of aggravation for Tom. Meanwhile, PJ pursues an elusive criminal due into town for the races and Maggie has her work cut out for her with a stern Sergeant from another precinct on his annual jaunt to Mount Thomas.

The wedding plans of Len and Joanne are not running smoothly and it takes a lot of work by Tom to get it back on track. Nick finds a young girl locked in a caravan and makes it his mission to charge her father for neglect. Meanwhile, Peter Horton arrives at Mount Thomas police station confessing to a murder committed over ten years previously but is he telling the truth or not? Elsewhere, Roz is stopped for speeding by Nick and loses her license as she has 11 points previously accrued. She begs Wayne to help her out but Nick won't budge. But Roz learns the truth at the wedding when Nick gets drunk and tells her that a speeding driver killed his wife and daughter.

Wayne and Roz continue to argue about her possible move to Melbourne. Later, whilst out on a routine patrol Wayne stops to help the occupants of a broken down car and is shot by an unknown assailant. Acting on a tip-off of a break and entry at hot shot solicitor Mr. Haley the Heelers arrest Sandra and Larry but on further investigation they find that the relationship between the couple and Mr. Haley runs much deeper.

Vivian Harris, a 70-year-old farmer, complains to the Heelers of harassment. Maggie and Wayne investigate and find that it is not kids that are harassing her but someone closer to home. Meanwhile, Roz interviews for the job as secretary as Mount Thomas station and gets the post but considers turning it down because it would mean being always with Wayne giving them no space.

A baby boy is found abandoned at Mount Thomas railway station which Nick finds hard to deal with. Maggie and Nick take him to the hospital but later the baby goes missing and The Heelers rush to find the baby and the mother before it is too late. Roz finds out about her new job at the station from Sgt. Croydon but her re-organization of the station and handling of queries gets Tom riled up almost immediately. It takes for Roz to quit for Tom to realize what he could lose.

Roz is asked to address the Countrywomen's Association about what it is like being married to a rural based cop. Wayne gets grief over the rostering of his fellow staff. An arthritic farmer keeps his son out of school but Nick sees a way to help the farmer and get the son back to school.

Chris is told by Tom that her ex-husband Terry Kennedy has been killed in a car crash. Chris identifies him from a tattoo but it later turns out that Terry is alive. It turns out that a friend of his with the same tattoo was killed. Tom and PJ find out and try to persuade her to turn Terry in but Terry is very persuasive. What will Chris do?

The Heelers search for missing five-year-old Zac Hart but find he's been taken on a shop-lifting spree with his step-sister Ginny. Later, their mother Heather is beaten up badly and Ginny swears that Heather's ex Barry beat her up. But when arrested Barry admits to beating up Heather but did not see or take Zac. So leads the Heelers in a frantic search to find his secret hiding place before it is too late.

Visiting salesman George Patterson's car is stolen and when it's recovered by Wayne he claims that two of his leather jackets are missing from the car. Following his claim nosy neighbor, Graham McCann, calls into the police station and states that he saw Wayne take the jackets. Wayne is investigated and Roz is justifiably annoyed that they are targeting Wayne. Meanwhile, P.J. watches a known criminal who believes stole a safe from a local shop. He doesn't have long to wait when the errant thief injures himself trying to blow open the safe with dynamite. It later transpires that he also stole George Patterson's car to move the safe and took the missing jackets as well. Later, Chris bars Graham McCann from her pub.

Season 1, Episode 17: Meat Is Hung, Men Are Hanged

Lee Sutcliffe, the daughter of convicted child killer Clive Royce Ostroff, and her husband Jim become the targets of a terror campaign, both at their home and at work, after Clive is granted early release. Clive had murdered 9-year-old Rebecca Rees fourteen years previously as she walked home from school. The Heelers must try and convince the locals, who swear revenge, that Lee is also a victim and should be left alone. Tom has to convince Clive to take the train away from Mount Thomas to Melbourne for his own safety.

Divisional Inspector Russell Falcon-Price is adamant someone made an attempt on his life during an adventure weekend away (The 'Love In') with some of the Heelers - and he points the finger squarely at Constable Jo Parrish. Jo's colleagues have their doubts about his claim but once the investigation gets rolling, Jo's practical jokes against the Inspector coupled with questionable behaviour by everyone involved on the adventure weekend, seems to indicate that perhaps Russell's suspicions were right-but just not about the person responsible. Meanwhile back in Mount Thomas, Ben attends his first Alcoholics Anonymous meeting where he bumps into Mrs. Felicity Falcon-Price, to whom he issued a traffic infringement notice several weeks ago. After they get over their initial embarrassment at seeing each other there, Felicity invites Ben back for coffee.

Tom is now the prime suspect for the murder of Ryan. Tom, PJ and Nick Schulz believe Helen Morris, the key witness, is lying and set out to uncover her motives for doing so. They discover that Ryan was the father of her expectant baby and Tarni found out about it. Lenny Dysart eventually admits to the Heelers that it was Tarni that killed Ryan and her idea to frame Tom Croydon. Kelly is then kidnapped by Tarni knowing that Tom will come to her rescue. Tom does and is more than a match for Tarni which leads to her arrest. Elsewhere, Amy, Danny and P.J. have to deal with a 14-year-old confession from a failed armed robber who just keeps going off subject.

Elsewhere, Kelly and Joss look into a suspicious robbery and begin to suspect the daughter - Jorja Murphy - was behind it.

After PJ witnesses Garth losing his temper with Bill Lapscott he does some digging and finds that Garth was the victim of sexual abuse and arrests him on suspicion of murder but Amy is not convinced. After Amy collects food for herself and PJ she is attacked by an unseen assailant. Meanwhile Susie and Jonesy follow up on a report of a baby left in a car, only to find the baby has been kidnapped by the baby's deaf father and he won't tell them where the baby is. Elsewhere, Kelly is outraged when she thinks Joss is stealing chocolate bars from the charity box Mark has set up in the office. But when Joss sets her up she declares war between them.

The Mount Thomas serial killer saga continues as Amy regains consciousness and sees Garth leaning over her and assumes he is the killer. Garth denies it and states that he saw someone attack Amy before he got to her. But later at the hospital she recalls that she smelt a distinctive smell which sets the team on a different but narrow lead - The Prior family. Then Amy is kidnapped by the killer and the team search frantically for her whilst desperately trying to get answers from the Priors. Amy talks to her captor Steven about his abuse and after wards he knocks her out. The team discover Amy and they go to the Prior house where Steven kills his father for the abuse he suffered. Later Amy tells Garth that she doesn't want to see him again as he didn't support her when she needed him years ago.

Depressed Bernie Gardner is found dead by suicide in his garden shed after a confrontation with local doctor Dr. Barbara Hunter. Soon after a bomb in found at the hospital and Susie goes to bat to save Bernie's reputation and as she unravels the case, she discovers that Dr. Hunter had more than one person with a grudge against her. When there is a further bomb threat against the hospital, the Heelers can only avert catastrophe by discovering the true identity of the bomber. Joss believes he has a hot suspect in the hospital bombing case, but when he goes off on his own unauthorized investigation, Kelly suffers the consequences after a paint bomb explodes in her face. Meanwhile, encouraged by Alex, Jonesy finally plucks up the courage to ask Susie out but gets disappointed by her response.

The video store has been burnt down, with its proprietor inside, and suspicion falls on Matt. Meanwhile, Alex continues his half-hearted performance as sergeant, and every decision he makes seems to go wrong. He continues his campaign for a skate bowl, and sends Joss and Kelly to pick up "Sponge" Bob, an old homeless man accused of leaving a café without paying. This leads them to the railway yards where Estelle had previously nearly blinded Kelly with acid, and she is so jittery she pulls her gun on Spongebob, and he lays a complaint against her.

Snr Sgt Tom Croydon is mysteriously absent, having uncharacteristically taken a few days' leave, supposedly to go fishing. Amy knows where he really is but she isn't saying; Kelly tries to track him down. Alex's son Rory is at the station, having another day off school, and Susie takes him with her on a routine trip to a farm to get some papers signed.

Kelly and Joss haul the pilot from a crashed crop-spraying plane - or rather, Kelly does, with the help of a a neighbouring organic farmer. Joss keeps his distance, apparently afraid the plane will explode. The pilot has had letters threatening his plane will be sabotaged, and the greenie farmer, who's been heard to threaten him at a public meeting, soon becomes the prime suspect. Another incident reinforces Kelly's suspicion of him, and also her feeling that Joss has lost his nerve. But Joss has other troubles - he is seriously behind with his rent. Kelly's friend the new lawyer is representing the organic farmer, and their relationship continues its wild see-sawing between attraction and infuriation. Meanwhile, a box of valuable comics has been stolen from a collector, and Susie and Matt investigate. Alex's son Rory has a crush on Susie, and grabs any excuse to seek her out. She indulges him and recruits him and his friend Lachie, the son of the collector, as junior detectives. In this episode Alex reverts to the subtlety and sound judgement we used to see from him before he was pushed into the role of acting sergeant. He is insightful and effective, fair but firm, as both sergeant and father, and resolves each thread of the plot with wisdom even though he'd followed a few false trails earlier.

Disgraced former constable Adam Cooper returns to Mount Thomas and Tom Croydon has his suspicions about him only to be proven right when Cooper makes a serious accusation against Tom. Meanwhile, Tom receives some bad news about his cancer and is told he has to have chemotherapy where he strikes up an unlikely friendship with end-stage cancer victim Gina O'Connor. Elsewhere, Matt's hearing is affected when a shotgun is discharged beside his head during a botched drugs bust and David Murray asks Kelly to move in with him. Inspector Falcon Price calls the team together and tells them that Tom has been suspended and that he is closing the station and they will be re-deployed to other stations.

After 13 years and 510 episodes, BLUE HEELERS bids farewell with a special two hour movie-length episode hosted by Gold Logie winner, John Wood. Senior Sgt Tom Croydon knows he should be looking after his own health and renewing ties with his estranged family. But he's distracted when disgraced former constable Adam Cooper returns to town and makes serious criminal accusations against him. Detective Amy Fox and Acting Sergeant Alex Kirby pressure Tom to clear his name, but he seems disinterested. What they don't know is he's helping a young female cancer patient through the last stages of her terminal illness. Tom last saw Adam eight years ago when he was dismissed from the police force for corruption. Now Adam's accusations may send Tom to jail, the station is about to be closed, and the jobs of all the Mt Thomas police are on the line. But Tom does not seem interested in saving himself, or his colleagues. His personal life is in turmoil. Still coming to terms with the effects of his recent prostate cancer operation, Tom is caring for a fellow cancer patient in her final days. His new friend's plight makes him think about reuniting with his estranged daughters and grandchildren. Detective Amy Fox and Acting Sergeant Alex Kirby struggle to investigate Tom's case and keep the station running. The team reluctantly seek other postings and prepare to be split up. By the day's end, Tom has made some life altering decisions.
