DVD Playhouse—November 2009

By

Allen Gardner

Watchmen—The Ultimate Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday »

Milla Jovovich Joins Twitter; Updates from Resident Evil: Afterlife Set

5 November 2009 12:52 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Earlier this week, Dr. Cole Abaius and I were having a discussion about a new brand of director -- the super-accessible kind who are now connecting with us, and their audience through the social media site Twitter. Whereas they were previously just the folks behind the camera and in the hot seat during junket weekend prior to their release, directors like Up in the Air's Jason Reitman (@JasonReitman), The Brothers Bloom director Rian Johnson (@rcjohnso) and even that Clerks guy Kevin Smith (@ThatKevinSmith) are now just a tweet away. It is interesting to see them so connected, so close to the folks who buy tickets that pay their salaries. Then, there are the on-set tweeters. The publicist for The Expendables has been tweeting like crazy about Sly Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and everyone else who's come to that set. And Overture Films has someone on set with Breck Eisner's The Crazies (@TheCraziesFilm), tweeting live from the »

A-z Movie Reviews – C’s

4 November 2009 5:00 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

To continue my review of my epic journey to watch all my films from A-z, this is the Third part.

For those that don’t know I am watching all 700+ Dvd/Bluray films from A-z which has so far taken me 2+ years to get to the end of G’s!

I thought I should retrospectively review each letter and give my top 5 films from each alpha block and maybe bring your attention to some films you may not have seen, films you’ve not seen in ages or films you should give another try.

Another letter and another bunch of classics I should own and a selection of ones I’m glad to say I don’t own.

A few to mention are Catwoman, Cannonball Run, Cape Fear, Clash of the titans, Cool running’s, City lights, Chinatown, City of God, Cheerleader Ninjas, Cool as Ice, City on Fire and Casablanca. »

The Blair Witch Project: Ten Years On – Part 1

28 October 2009 5:01 PM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Halloween is upon us! Ten years ago this week, to coincide with Halloween, The Blair Witch Project was released in the UK. Combine that fact with the recent release of the Blair-like Paranormal Activity, and it’s clearly the perfect time to take a look back at the original shaky-cam horror movie.

Today, i’m going to look at how Blair Witch became a cultural phenomenon at the time, tomorrow take a look at the movie itself, and on Saturday will discuss how it’s influence is still felt by the industry today.

The Nineties were somewhat of a boon time for low budget independent film. With Kevin Smith’s huge Clerks success, and a whole raft of Tarantino wannabes putting together their own gangster tales, everyone felt like they could become the next big thing.

In 1993, two filmmakers, Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick, came up with the concept for »

Kevin Smith Ponders Horror Flick 'Red State' As Halloween Approaches, Only On MTV

23 October 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

One of the Kevin Smith projects that's been percolating for awhile is a horror movie he's been referring to as "Red State." It would be a considerable change of pace for the filmmaker, who is known best for his sharp dialogue and geek-pleasing cultural references. How big a change, you ask? "The dream would be to have people watch the movie and flat out not believe that I made it," he told MTV in an interview last year. With Halloween coming up, Splash Page editor Rick Marshall couldn't help but ask Smith for an update on the progress of the project in a recent interview, which you can check out in the video below.

"'Red State' has been tough to find f---ing money for," he said, in his typically profane manner. "Finding cash has been difficult. It's not a commercial movie by any stretch of the imagination." This »

Kevin Smith Discusses Working with Bruce Willis on A Couple Of Dicks

21 October 2009 3:18 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Kevin Smith is used to being the guy in charge on his film sets. Through his production company, View Askew, Smith has acted as writer, director, and editor on all of his "Askewniverse" films, even providing music (remember "Berserker" from Clerks?) and filling miscellaneous crew roles. However, for his latest film, A Couple of Dicks, starring his Live Free or Die Hard co-star Bruce Willis, Smith had to come to terms with the fact that his was not the only creative vision ... and that he was not necessarily top dog on the set.

So it took us like a week for us to figure out what it was we were doing together. I was going at it like, "Bruce, do it like this" I was directing Bruce the way I direct everybody else. And Bruce was like "I've been acting like Bruce Willis for 25 years, do you really think there's »

The Morning Read: 'The Prisoner' escapes on BluRay

20 October 2009 3:30 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Welcome to The Morning Read for Tuesday, October 20th. Happy 15th anniversary to Kevin Smith's first film, "Clerks," which played its first commercial dates in theaters this week in 1994.  That's a wild anniversary to pass as a viewer and I'm sure it's doubly strange for him as a filmmaker. I've been watching some episodes of "The Prisoner" on BluRay this weekend, and I'm amazed by how good they look.  Clear, colorful, clean, with no sign of age or wear.  Whoever's been holding on to the elements for this show deserves a raise and a new office because they are impressive.  Not just... »

Exclusive: We Shoot the Sh*t with Kevin Smith

18 October 2009 10:48 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

For a man that should need no introduction, I won't give one. But for an historic moment that demands one, I'm more than happy to oblige. Sixteen years ago, on October 3rd, 1993 (at or around 11 Am), Kevin Smith was standing in the back of an almost-empty theater on the verge of tears as his first film played for the first time in a public venue. Clerks would go on to become a cult hit and launch the career of a man who is all but worshiped by his fan base. But sixteen years ago, Kevin Smith had no idea what was to come. Skyrocketing to the top of the list of personal and professional honors, I was fortunate enough to talk with the New York Times Bestselling Author (and sometimes director) on the anniversary of that not-so-auspicious-at-the-time event to get his private feelings on his work, the Disney buyout of Marvel, his »

Uma Thurman Talking To Tarantino About Kill Bill 3

15 October 2009 10:15 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Kill Bill is the perfect movie for multiple sequels. Like Kevin Smith's Clerks and Before Sunrise, it.s the type of film that warrants multiple visits to the characters several years down the road. So when Quentin Tarantino said right after the release of Kill Bill that he.d like to visit the daughters of the characters ten years down the road, I was on board immediately. But now it seems as though Tarrantino is more serious than ever about a sequel. So serious, in fact, that he.s even talking to his Kill Bill star, Uma Thurman, about it. Interviewed by MTV, Thurman says, "We did chat, we did chat. He has not yet finished the script. I don't even really know if he's really started it, although I got a taste of some of his ideas and they are really good.. To hear an actress so excited »

Kevin Smith On His Video Pitch To Weezer: 'They Wanted Something Good, I Gave Them Something Me'

12 October 2009 8:24 AM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

The video for Weezer's new single "(If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To" (from their forthcoming seventh album Raditude) will be premiering soon, and no matter what was happening with Weezer's music, they have always been a top-shelf video band. In fact, they first gained national attention with the groundbreaking clip for "Buddy Holly" (which was directed by Spike Jonze). Along the way, they've worked with some huge directors (Jonze, Mark Romanek, Sophie Muller and Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris) on some cornerstone videos ("Say It Ain't So," "Hash Pipe" and last year's "Pork and Beans" among them).

One director they never worked with was "Clerks" and "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" mastermind Kevin Smith. But it wasn't for lack of trying — the band actually hit up Smith for a video treatment for "Keep Fishin'" back in 2002. "Weezer asked me about doing a video, »

Kevin Smith May Have Funding for ‘Red State’

8 October 2009 4:40 PM, PDT | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Cult filmmaker Kevin Smith may have finally found the funding he needs for Red State.  What the hell is that you ask?  Well, allow me to rewind the timeline, sir.

Smith announced the then untitled movie at the Wizard World Chicago event in 2006.  He initially resisted giving details, but a fan shouted a rock, paper, scissors challenge and Smith accepted.  After all, a real man never backs down from hand-based duels.  After besting the fan in two out of three, Smith said he’s always wanted to try a horror film to a raucous response.  Interest in the movie was born.

Then the writer/director got around to finishing the script in 2007 and offered more info.  Red State is a controversial sort of “horror flick” about religious fundamentalists in Middle America inspired by a Fred Phelps-like monster.  It goes without saying this a major departure for the typically comedic filmmaker. »
