Their Best Role: Bill Murray

1 hour ago | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

At first Bill Murray was a goofball, a lounge singer or a guy that tried to blow up a gopher. Graduating to movie stardom, he soon found a style of detached cool that worked like gangbusters, or ghostbusters. In movies like Stripes and Ghostbusters, he would make wry comments while the rest of his co-stars acted their parts; he rarely got involved in the drama. But it worked. A decade later, however, he could be seen giving an actual performance in Wes Anderson's Rushmore (1998). He was still funny, but he found a real emotional connection with his co-stars, and he was touching. From there, you could easily look back and find other moments of greatness: his bit parts in films like Tootsie, Ed Wood, Kingpin and Wild Things, his abrasive gangster in Mad Dog and Glory, in the very dark, anxious and underrated Quick Change, which was his directorial »

Two new Persia pics

16 hours ago | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

A couple of new images from Disney's Prince Of Persia: Sands Of Time have surfaced from beneath the... sand. Not the most exciting two images you'll be seeing today, but here they are nevertheless, courtesy of French website Fantasy.fr. It's not really a big deal, but it's just always funny to me... every time I see images of Jake Gyllenhaal in this, I'm reminded of Ed Wood and the scene where Wood is talking to Orson Welles (played brilliantly by Vincent D'Onofrio) about how movie »

New Alice In Wonderland Trailer

16 December 2009 8:02 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Disney has released a new trailer for Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland and you can check it out after the jump.  While the teaser trailer for Alice looked cool, this new trailer is definitely going to wow you with some pretty incredible visuals.  In fact, with this trailer, we’re finally getting a real taste of the movie and in my opinion…it looks like the perfect marriage between story and visuals.  Because if there was ever a place that Tim Burton was meant to bring to life, it’s the magical world of Wonderland.  Also, the way he’s making the film, with a mixture of live action, animation and CGI, I think it’s going to be amazing.  Check out the trailer and judge it for yourself:

Further down is the info Disney gave us about the film.  Alice in Wonderland stars Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, »

Where have all the biopics gone?

9 December 2009 1:32 PM, PST | EW.com - The Movie Critics | See recent EW.com - The Movie Critics news »

A few years ago, the Hollywood biopic finally seemed to be coming of age. It was the fall of 2004 -- a season that gave us not one but two of the most thrilling biographical dramas ever made, the jumpin' and impassioned Ray and the bold and brilliant Kinsey. (No, that's not Kinsey at left -- it's Woody Harrelson as Larry Flynt -- though it's probably a ménage he would have approved of.) The fact that these two movies came out within one month of each other was a coincidence, yet I marveled, at the time, at what they had in »

The Best Films of the Decade (aka "The Naughties")

Best Films Of The Decade (aka The Naughties) From Alex & Terry

List # 1

By Alex Simon

When Terry and I initially discussed writing these lists, I had a tough time thinking back on 20 films over the past decade which I was really taken with, thinking that movies have sunk so low over the past ten years, that even choosing a dozen would be a short-order job. Thirty minutes into it, my list had nearly 60 titles! After much cutting, pasting, and re-cutting and pasting, here are my top 20 films (in no particular order) of the first decade of the 21st century, dubbed by many as “the naughties.” --A.S.

1.No Country for Old Men (Coen Brothers, 2007) An elegiac blend of stark beauty and full-throttle despair from two of our finest filmmakers, set in the contemporary American West. Every frame is damn near flawless, and would have been an even more perfect vehicle for the late Sam Peckinpah. »

Burton and Depp Casting Dark Shadows

8 December 2009 7:40 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

If you were worried that the mix in Tim Burton’s palette was becoming too colourful with his upcoming adaptation of Lewis Carrol’s Alice In Wonderland then the news that Burton’s next project returns him to his beloved muted Gothic tones will be a relief.

SciFi Wire spoke to producer Graham King and discovered that Burton will be employing the services of Johnny Depp in bringing a big screen adaptation of the 60s Us TV soap opera Dark Shadows.

SciFi Wire quotes King: We’ve been working on the script a lot, even though he’s working on Alice…We’ve been given a script. John August wrote the first screenplay. We’re making some changes, but the film’s going to be in production, as I say, September or October of next year.”

The source material is unknown to me, and I’m not sure it’s been seen in the UK, »

Awesome Orsons: Who's the best on-screen Welles?

8 December 2009 6:39 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Christian McKay's performance in Richard Linklater's film has got tongues wagging about a possible Oscar nod. Was he some kind of an Orson?

"What you're really doing is […] presenting to the public that part of you which corresponds to the part which you're playing. There is a villain in each of us, a murderer in each of us, a saint in each of us. And the actor is the man or woman who can eliminate from himself those things which will interfere with that truth."

It's perhaps fitting that Orson Welles maintained such views on acting: that each time the camera rolls or the curtain rises, the players are pulling out aspects of themselves in order to portray particular characters. For when Welles himself has been depicted on screen, the results have been remarkably varied. For such a studied individual, there seems to be no one interpretation of him, »

'Dark Shadows' To Shoot Next Fall

7 December 2009 9:05 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

It sounds like Dark Shadows is definitely back on schedule, albeit a little more than a year later than originally anticipated.

According to Sci Fi Wire, producer Graham King said the film would be in production by next fall. Producer Richard Zanuk previously said work on Dark Shadows would begin in summer 2009.

The movie adaptation of the classic 1960’s gothic soap opera, which featured vampires, werewolves, ghosts, and other assorted creatures, will be directed by Tim Burton as his post-Alice in Wonderland project. Not surprisingly, Johnny Depp, who teamed with Burton on Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Sweeney Todd and the upcoming Alice will star as the brooding vampire Barnabas Collins.

Burton is finishing post-production on Alice in Wonderland. As such, King said he is already prepping production on Dark Shadows with screenwriters, to make it easier for Burton to slide into it next year.

Depp Gives Singer/Songwriter Babybird A 2010 Boost

6 December 2009 3:06 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Johnny Depp has given British hitmaker Babybird a big boost by insisting the singer/songwriter's 2010 album Ex-maniac will be the album of the year.

The movie star was asked to list his 'Essentials' for U.S. magazine Entertainment Weekly and admits he already can't live without his friend's new album.

Depp says, "He's a national treasure, if you're British. For everyone else, he's a diamond waiting to be found. Lyrically, he's black as night, brilliant and sharp as a razor."

The Pirates of the Caribbean star also listed longtime partner Vanessa Paradis' latest album, Divinidylle, among his favourites, calling it "the most beautiful soundtrack to our life en famille".

And there's also mention of his onscreen Pirates father Keith Richards' Unknown Dreams and Rum, Sodomy & The Lash by The Pogues.

Depp also namechecks Emir Kusturica's Time of The Gypsies and Underground among his favourite films, calling the Serbian filmmaker, "one of the last true auteurs". The actor is in talks to play Mexican bandit revolutionary Pancho Villa in Kusturica's next film.

Also on the star's top film list: his own Ed Wood, Jim Jarmusch's Down By Law and cult British movie Withnail & I, which he can freely quote.

He adds, "(That's) probably the funniest f**king film I've ever seen." »

Exclusive: Get an Inside Look At Tim Burton’s MoMa Exhibit

1 December 2009 11:00 AM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

While most film directors are considered “artists”, there are only a few that fit that role to it’s essential definition. Tim Burton is a filmmaker, writer, painter, and photographer. These skills alone could warrant him a feature at most museums, before you even take into account the vast worlds that Burton has created with every one of his films. We were lucky enough to get an exclusive peak at the brand new Tim Burton Exhibit in New York’s Museum of Modern Art sponsored by the SyFy channel, and we were blown away.

Starting with the opening hallway, the very first room lets you into Burton’s twisted Carnival setting, in which black light, several neon paintings, and a single rotating object sits in the center of the room. This alone is enough to make most cheap haunted houses worth it, and the real exhibit hasn’t even started. »

Alice in Wonderland Costumer Colleen Atwood: 'It's Going To Be Amazing'

24 November 2009 7:00 AM, PST | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

Think of the look of any Johnny Depp character from the Tim Burton universe -- from Edward Scissorhands' bondage buckles to Ed Wood's angora sweaters to the breeches and waistcoasts of Sleepy Hollow's Ichabod Crane -- and Colleen Atwood was the woman who envisioned and executed it. One of the most sought-after and gifted costume designers working in Hollywood today, Atwood has been nominated for an astounding eight Academy Awards, of which she's won two -- for Chicago and Memoirs of a Geisha. Just reading about her 2009 slate is enough to render you exhausted: good thing she had Depp's measurements seared into her memory when work began on Michael Mann's Public Enemies (which comes out on Blu-ray and DVD Dec. 8th); then there was the business of putting all those other Oscar winners into revealing outfits for Nine; and let's not forget Mr. Burton, who called »

trailer break: ‘Me and Orson Welles’

19 November 2009 8:34 AM, PST | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

I can’t help it: the title Me and Orson Welles makes me think of that scene in Ed Wood when Johnny Depp’s Wood corners Vincent D’Onofrio’s Welles and they talk about movies. Wow: Richard Linklater made a movie with Zac Efron. I would have thought that if Slacker met High School Musical, teen cinema would collapse into a black hole, or something equally bad and unlikely would happen... Me and Orson Welles opens in the U.S. on November 25, and in the U.K. on December 4. »

10 Most Fascinating 'End of the World' Movies

8 November 2009 4:59 AM, PST | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

There are many theories, ideas or should I say 'schools of thought' on how the world would end. At the height of the Cold War, nuclear annihilation ranks at the very top. While others argue it will not be man who will destroy the world (directly) but - an epidemic of global proportions (most probably from a potent strain of virus - think: I am Legend) or severe climactic change (another ice age perhaps? That would be Day After Tommorow right?) or mechanical uprising (The Terminator, anyone?) or even attack from the outside - conquering aliens (Mars Attacks!) or perhaps an asteroid. And let's not forget zombies!

Who Should Direct 'Breaking Dawn'? Tim Burton!

5 November 2009 1:30 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

From MTV.Com: Tim Burton digs supernatural stories: the goth-comic ghost tale of "Beetlejuice," the headless killer from the great beyond in "Sleepy Hollow," the undead love story of "Corpse Bride." In a way, Burton knows vampires too, resurrecting Bela Lugosi — the definitive cinematic Count Dracula — in the Oscar-winning biopic "Ed Wood."

All of this has made "New Moon" vampire Jamie Campbell Bower think that Burton should direct "Breaking Dawn," the expected film adaptation of the final book in Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" series.

Interview: 50 Years of Filmmaking With Martin Landau

2 November 2009 2:30 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – The legendary Martin Landau was recently in Chicago with two films in special presentation at The 45th Annual Chicago International Film Festival - the classic “North by Northwest,” also releasing on Blu-Ray tomorrow, November 3rd, 2009, and the new drama “Lovely, Still,” co-starring Ellen Burstyn.

Very few actors will ever have an experience like Mr. Landau did at the film festival in October, bringing two experiences from such different eras of their working life. We spent a lot of time with Martin discussing what’s important to him as an actor and he made clear that it’s the arc of his character that’s essential to the projects he chooses.

Landau explains, “The interesting thing is that I’ve had an interesting cross-section of directors - Joe Mankiewicz, George Stevens, Henry Hathaway, George Marshall, Tim Burton, Francis Coppola, Woody Allen, Steve Spielberg. The good directors create a playground for »
