A Gothic Weekend of Hallucinations
Last night, I was circling a local used video store for some long forgotten haunts when I happened upon Gothic . I remembered seeing this cover on the store shelves when I was young and my mom not letting me rent it because the cover art featured what looked like a naked midget squatting over a half-naked chick. She was determined it was some lurid, disturbing sex fest. So, now well into my 20’s, I grabbed it a truly teen-angsty way and headed home to enjoy my forbidden fruit. My mom’s assessment of the film was not that far off.
I knew little about this film aside from the fact that it was supposed to be a “version” of how Mary Shelley came to write the epic horror story Frankenstein. For those of you who feel asleep in high school English class, Mary Shelley, her husband /poet Percy Shelley,

Marvel Legend To Cameo In ‘Thor’

It’s as predictable as the tides: comic book master Stan Lee will make a cameo appearance in Kenneth Branagh’s Thor. Announced via Twitter, Lee wrote: “Kenneth Branagh (of course I call him “Ken!”) said my cameo’s set for the upcoming Thor movie. –To him, it’s a cameo, to me– it’s a Role!”
Lee has been in every Marvel film this past decade, so it’s no great shock to hear this. Branagh, however, is a bizarre choice for a Marvel comic adaptation. The Shakespearean actor and director will no doubt bring a deeper texture to the drama that, perhaps, others might not have been able too.
Branagh’s work away from Shakespeare has a ropey history. Frankenstein was almost-too faithful to the original text, and who remembers Dead Again? Marvel are taking a huge gamble, no matter how talented the man is. It’s always

Man, I hate retyping information. This afternoon I received a fax from a close friend with some really interesting Intel. Apparently, Disney is officially undergoing casting for Tim Burton's Frankenweenie, although a shoot date or location has yet to be locked down. At least they're moving on the project, at least that's something. Anyways, below you'll find the official breakdown being sent out to New York actors.
Frankenweenie (1984) is one of Burton's earlier films, a parody of the 1931 film Frankenstein based on Mary Shelley's book of the same name. The story tells of a man who brings his dog back to life after it is killed by a car.

Stephenie Meyer - a squeaky-clean vampire queen

New Moon's chaste tale of the undead will fill the world's cinemas with teenage girls this week, yet the woman behind a publishing phenomenon to rival Jk Rowling and Dan Brown has never even seen an R-rated movie
If you have even the most fleeting acquaintance with a prepubescent girl, the chances are you've gathered that the film of New Moon, the second in Stephenie Meyer's bestselling quartet of vampire novels, is released on Friday.
At a "stars meet the fans" event in London's Battersea Park last week, the hysteria that has greeted each publication day quickened into a bacchanalian frenzy. It came complete with nubile tweens with "Bite me" scrawled across their foreheads, thanks largely to the pallid charms of Robert Pattinson, the young British actor who graduated from a bit part in a Harry Potter film to playing the glitteringly beautiful 107-year-old vampire Edward Cullen.

Welcome to HorrorFest 2009. Two things arrived in the mail in quick succession recently, and it seemed like a lovely bit of synchronicity. First up, Sony sent the BluRay of Kenneth Branagh's version of "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein," and I decided to brave it out and watch the film for the first time since it was released in theaters. Second, Vintage Classics sent me a new paperback edition of the book, and I almost just tossed it on a shelf without looking at it. I've got several copies of the book in the house already, and I couldn't imagine why a new edition would

Casting is in full-force this month for Marvel's next big comic adaptation, the Kenneth Branagh directed Thor, which means that you will undoubtedly be bombarded with more than a few "this person is auditioning" stories. And until official word is heard from inside the halls of Marvel, it is all nothing more than hearsay. However, it is fun and I would like to indulge you by breaking down some of the names who've been named in the past few days.
Dominic Cooper
The most solid of these rumors is Mamma Mia! star Dominic Cooper, who is doing press for his role in Lone Scherfig's An Education. He talked to Movieline this week, and it was revealed that he's been studying for an audition for the film. When probed as to what part he might play, Cooper and interviewer Kyle Buchanon settled on the part of Fandral the Dashing, one of the Warriors Three. All

Jude Law and Robert De Niro Possibly Cast in 'Thor'

Words on the street are, Jude Law and Robert De Niro are going to be seen having a part in Marvel's "Thor". According to Ain't It Cool News, "Valkyrie" actor Matthias Schweighofer has tossed in the names of those two actors into the film's cast ensemble in a recent interview with the German edition of GQ.
Despite the claim that the two have joined the cast, it is still unclear what part each of them will play on the superhero story. Both De Niro and Law have worked together with director Kenneth Branagh previously. De Niro was directed by Branagh in "Frankenstein", while Law teamed up with the helmer for "Sleuth".
In addition to telling GQ about De Niro and Law's casting possibility, 28-year-old Schweighofer also uncovered that he himself is in the running for a role in the film. Still, AICN didn't elaborate more on whether or not the

Colour us supremely skeptical until someone makes an official announcement, but the latest Thor rumour has Robert De Niro and Jude Law joining the cast.
Here's why our Crapola Radar is currently beeping its neurotic little heart out: the word is from Ain't It Cool News, which got a tip that Valkyrie's Matthias Schweieghofer had told German GQ that the pair had already signed on.
It's possible - after all, Kenneth Branagh's worked with both of them separately in the past (on Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Sleuth) and he's the sort of...

Robert De Niro and Jude Law have joined the cast of Kenneth Branagh's Thor movie, it's being claimed.
Ain't It Cool News says it received a tip-off about an interview with actor Matthias Schweighofer (pictured) in the November edition of GQ magazine in Germany.
In it, the 28-year-old actor apparently says he is in the running for a part in Thor and reveals that De Niro and Law have already been cast in the film, which is set for release in May 2011.
At present, this is all unconfirmed and their roles are unspecified. The article is not on the website for German GQ, nor is it mentioned in the media interviews section on Matthias Schweighofer's official website.
Schweighofer starred with Branagh in Bryan Singer's Valkyrie. De Niro was in the Branagh-directed Frankenstein, Law in Branagh's Sleuth.
In addition, Stan Lee, the former president of Marvel Comics, recently revealed

Star power seems to be a necessity for comic-book movies. The trend started back in 1978 with Superman: The Movie, when the formula was to find the right actor to portray Superman (as opposed to finding a star and putting him in the costume) and then surround Superman with big name talent—in that case Marlon Brando (Jor-El) and Gene Hackman (Lex Luthor).
It worked, and it worked brilliantly.
Nowadays there seems to be a greater emphasis on ensuring that all the major players — even the lead — have some name recognition, and to that end, Kenneth Branagh is apparently about to cast some big-name talent in his comic book-to-feature adaptation of Marvel's Thor. AICN reports that actor Matthias Schweighofer (Valkyrie) has revealed to GQ magazine that he is in the running for a role in Thor and that both Jude Law and Robert De Niro have already joined the cast.

In last two weeks there have been a few additional announcements made for Marvel Studios’ upcoming Thor film. We learned that Stellan Skarsgård, father of Thor candidate Alexander Skarsgård, was cast into the movie but he had to remain tight-lipped about who he was playing. Following that, a pair of open casting calls surfaced that asked for a college student and a bunch of large “fearless” warriors.
So, if you weren’t excited about the cast so far which also includes Chris Hemsworth as the title character, Tom Hiddleston as his nemesis, Natalie Portman, Jaimie Alexander, Colm Feore and possibly Brian Blessed as Odin, you might be more excited now with the following two names possibly added to the cast.
According to actor Matthias Schweighöfer (Valkyrie) in an interview for the German edition of GQ, he reveals that he’s in the running for a role in Thor but that

Two superhero movies have casting rumors, both from Harry Knowles and Ain't It Cool News. The first one we'll talk about is Thor, and according to a German GQ interview with actor Matthias Schweighöfer (Valkyrie), he's in discussions to join the movie. But that, obviously, isn't the headline.
Schweighöfer contends in the interview that Jude Law and Robert De Niro will be in Thor, as well. And that is big news. Law recently worked in Kenneth Branagh's remake of Sleuth with Michael Caine; De Niro played opposite Branagh in his really bad Frankenstein movie about 15 years ago. So the connections make sense, but as Ain't It Cool asks, who in the world would they play?
We'll prefer to doubt the news until we hear something official, but it should be pointed out that Thor is the one Avengers flick that needs a lot of good performers, simply because it's such a difficult proposition.

Brad Anderson has signed on to direct the film adaptation of “The Living And The Dead,” a graphic novel by writers Todd Livingston & Robert Tinnell and artist Micah Farritor.
Anderson—perhaps best known for his work on “The Machinist” and “Session 9”—has more recently left his mark on TV by directing several episodes of “Fringe.” He is currently directing the horror/thriller “Vanishing on 7th Street” with Hayden Christensen and Thandie Newton.
Mania is reporting that Anderson will direct “The Living And The Dead” for Solipsist Films. Livingston & Tinnell have also written the screenplay adaptation of their graphic novel.
Originally released in 2005 by Speakeasy comics, “The Living And The Dead” takes place in nineteenth century Europe and focuses on a perverse madman who lures his victims to be tortured and killed as part of his twisted “performance art.”
