Scenes We Love: Immortal Beloved

I've written briefly about this scene before, a few years ago, when I retro reviewed Immortal Beloved. Gary Oldman plays a young Beethoven, struggling to keep his descending deafness a secret from those around him. Unbeknownst to him, his student and passion, Guilietta, has schemed up a deal with her father so that he will accept Beethoven's proposal of marriage. A piano will be placed into the room, and while the composer thinks everyone is away, father and daughter will hide and listen to see if there is still music left in the man. If there is, Guilietta can marry Ludwig.
While they hide behind a wall, Beethoven walks over to the piano with trepidation, sits down, and hammers out some jarring notes. It looks like he has, indeed, lost it -- that her father was right. But then a few notes hesitantly flow from Beethoven's fingers. He

Comparing 'Twilight' And 'Bram Stoker's Dracula' With MTV's Gore Girls

Welcome to Gore Girls! MTV contributor Terri Schwartz doesn't know crap about the horror genre, and she's volunteered to be our Movies Blog guinea pig. She has a good guide too. Fellow contributor Jenni Miller is a bonafide horror enthusiast, and she's willing to walk Terri through her formative experiences with blood, guts, monsters and maniacs. Together, this dynamic duo are The Gore Girls!!! Good luck Terri... you're definitely going to need it.
Today brings another special Friday edition of MTV's Gore Girls. With "New Moon" freshly arrived in theaters, we decided to try something a little bit different. Instead of Jenni and Terri discussing a single movie, they watched "Bram Stoker's Dracula" -- a romance-focused vampire story, albeit with quite a bit more horror than Stephenie Meyer's works -- and discussed it in relation to "Twilight." For those who haven't seen it, "Dracula" is a pretty straightforward adaptation of Bram Stoker's 1897 book.

Mr. Nice Trailer Online

Here's a lengthy trailer for Mr. Nice, starring the charismatic Welsh actor Rhys Ifans as the charismatic Welsh drug smuggler and possible spy Howard Marks. The film is directed by Bernard Rose (Candyman, Immortal Beloved) and based on Marks' autobiography: a collection of tall tales taking from his childhood in South Wales, to his university life at Oxford, to his world-renown as a cannabis dealer and smuggler, and master of the absurd disguise. At one time or another he was supposedly connected to the CIA, MI6, the Ira, the Mafia, and the Mexican secret service. If there is the occasional unfortunate resemblance to The Boat That Rocked in the trailer (the music, the period setting, Ifans getting it on with assorted ladeez), that should surely only be cosmetic. There's a lot of mileage for globetrotting drama, adventure and big laughs in Marks' version of his life story, and Ifans seems jawdroppingly well cast.

One day I was strolling alongside bins of super-cheap used DVDs when I spotted Gary Oldman's face. The DVD in question: Tiptoes, directed by the writer/director of Freeway, Matthew Bright. Naturally, I picked it up, wondering how I'd never heard of this movie before. I flipped it over, and started reading:
No couple could be more in love than Steven (Matthew McConaughey) and Carol (Kate Beckinsale). But Steven has a little secret he's been keeping to himself. He has a twin brother (Gary Oldman), who just happens to be a dwarf. In fact, with the exception of Steven, his entire family is made up of little people.
Oldman as a dwarf? There was no way I could refuse such a thing, and rushed home to watch it. As the below trailer shows, this is far from a stellar movie, even if they say the film is filled with
