Vampires pretty much put Summit Entertainment on the map after the company made the wise decision to produce and distribute "Twilight." Now, as Summit continues to rake in money with "New Moon," The Hollywood Reporter brings word that the house Edward Cullen built is interested in exploring the roots of the undead creatures at the heart of the franchise.
Summit will collaborate with Brad Pitt's production company, Plan B, on "Vlad," a period action film about Vlad the Impaler as a young prince. The real-life 15th century Wallachian ruler, famously the inspiration for Bram Stoker's book "Dracula," may not be portrayed in the film as a vampire, but his connection to the mythology cannot really be ignored.
Viewers may also be reminded that Pitt starred in "Interview With the Vampire," though it's not likely the actor will appear in "Vlad," for which Summit reportedly wants to "break a new talent.

No One can fail to have noticed the recent surge of interest in vampires, like a throbbing vein in popular culture.
On TV, we have True Blood, The Vampire Diaries and Being Human, while undead bloodsuckers have also invaded cinema this year in the form of Let The Right One In (released last year in the USA), Blood: The Last Vampire, Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant and The Twilight Saga: New Moon.
So why are vampires in vogue at the moment? New Moon director Chris Weitz has given his views on the phenomenon.
Weitz said: "The only thing I can think of is that it is a very adaptable metaphor.
"In the 80s the vampire myth would have been about Aids; in the 90s, drug addiction. Nowadays, maybe it is about restraint and desire but I cannot explain why there are any number of series of books, movies and stuff about vampires.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon dawned with a hot-blooded estimated $140.7 million on approximately 8,500 screens at 4,024 sites over the weekend, charting as the third highest-grossing opening behind only The Dark Knight and Spider-Man 3 and the biggest of 2009. With the advent of New Moon, not to mention an excellent showing by The Blind Side, overall business surged 56 percent over the same weekend last year when Twilight and Bolt debuted and was the second-highest seen in history, behind the weekend that The Dark Knight opened.
On its opening day, New Moon shattered the records for opening day ($72.7 million) and midnight showings ($26.3 million), thanks to the rush of its fervent fan base. Just like its predecessor, Twilight, the supernatural romance fell over 40 percent Friday-to-Saturday and the Friday accounted for more than half of the weekend business. On each day, New Moon essentially doubled the grosses of Twilight, which is an incredible feat for a sequel,

We know how it is: You’d like to go to the movies this weekend, but there’s all that sighing and sulking and brooding over your immortal undead lover to do, and that’s just exhausting. But you can have a multiplex-like experience at home with a collection of the right DVDs. And when someone asks you on Monday, “Hey, did you see New Moon this weekend?” you can reply, “No, I watched some vampire and werewolf movies that don’t suck instead.”
Instead Of: The Twilight Saga: New Moon, in which -- Omg! -- adorable clumsy beautiful humble human Bella has to choose between her love for sparkly mopey vampire Edward and her attraction to buff buff werewolf Jacob...
Watch: A real vampire movie... like 2000’s Shadow of the Vampire, a sly sendup of bloodsuckers and moviemaking; its premise is along the lines of: What would happen if

On loving vampires: "I watch True Blood. I love vampire stuff-it’s sexy. There’s a danger element, and it’s sensual, what they do. I love the movie Twilight. It satisfies the 14-year-old girl in you."
On being born an actress: "A kid doesn’t come out being, like, 'I’m going to be an actor' . . . I think everyone is born with natural abilities, and it just happened that mine is something I got famous for."
On her ex, Jake Gyllenhaal: "It would be nice to see him,

New Moon's chaste tale of the undead will fill the world's cinemas with teenage girls this week, yet the woman behind a publishing phenomenon to rival Jk Rowling and Dan Brown has never even seen an R-rated movie
If you have even the most fleeting acquaintance with a prepubescent girl, the chances are you've gathered that the film of New Moon, the second in Stephenie Meyer's bestselling quartet of vampire novels, is released on Friday.
At a "stars meet the fans" event in London's Battersea Park last week, the hysteria that has greeted each publication day quickened into a bacchanalian frenzy. It came complete with nubile tweens with "Bite me" scrawled across their foreheads, thanks largely to the pallid charms of Robert Pattinson, the young British actor who graduated from a bit part in a Harry Potter film to playing the glitteringly beautiful 107-year-old vampire Edward Cullen.
