If you’ve read any of my other reviews, you might have picked up that I quite like action films. If you haven’t, allow me to explain; I quite like action films. That is to say Die Hard is my favourite film of all time, and Crank is the best action film of recent years bar none. That doesn’t mean that I don’t have extensive tastes, it just means that my tolerance for terrible Hollywood tripe is pretty high*. I will actively seek out films that look like they are going to be so-bad-they’re-good. Which is why the Jamie Foxx/Gerard Butler vehicle Law Abiding Citizen appealed to me. The trailers made it look really awful, and one reviewer described it as the ‘ultimate popcorn movie’, whatever that means. I was prepared for my thumbs to be thoroughly erect in appreciation.

There are plenty of trippy movie scenes – but watching them sober makes you feel like the designated driver in a roomful of drunks
Thirty-six years ago, I dropped a tab of Lsd. It was Ok, but I never felt the urge to do it again, and never thought much about it – until the other day, when I was watching Taking Woodstock. To the sound of Love's The Red Telephone, Ang Lee serves up an acid trip so uncannily spot-on, I swear it gave me my first ever flashback.
It's not as though there's ever been a shortage of trippy scenes in films. It's just they always seemed to chime more with the experiences of the film-makers than with my own. Oliver’s Stone’s Natural Born Killers is a movie that, even with its political and social overtones, still stands the test of time. It’s a bravura tour de force motion picture that still pushes the limits of the form to this day. And now, a brand new Uncut Version and Director’s Cut has been released by Warner Home Video, which is sure to delight fans of this controversial motion picture.

If you've been paying any attention to the news this past few days, then you know that last Thursday an Army psychiatrist fatally shot 12 people and wounded 31 at Fort Hood in Texas. Since the beginning of the Iraq invasion in 2003, 75 Fort Hood soldiers have killed themselves. Nine of them committed suicide this year. Moreover, Army suicides have increased by 37% since 2006. In light of recent events, the release of the film The Messenger, starring Ben Foster and Woody Harrelson, on November 13, could not be more timely.
The Messenger opens with Ben Foster (Pandorum, X-Men: The Last Stand, Alpha Dog) applying medicinal drops to one of his eyes. His character, Staff Sergeant Will Montgomery, has recently returned home from a tour of duty and one of his eyes was damaged during combat in Iraq. This time around the guys discuss Joss Whedon’s bid to buy the Terminator franchise, XBox’s new Live Rewards program, the epic Guitar Hero vs. Rock Band war, Best Buy’s foray into video on demand and the merits of various Michael Caine movies.

In honor of Halloween, a day of vampires and naughty misdeeds, I sat down to watch Let the Right One In again -- a movie tied to a naughty misdeed of my own. My offending act of immoral behavior? Back when it was released, one year ago, on Oct. 24, 2008, I wrote a review that trashed this pensive and brooding Swedish vampire movie. I called it "arty," I said that it wasn't "coherent," and I accused the hero -- a 12-year-old blond boy in a wintry Stockholm suburb who befriends the vampire child next door -- of "skulk through the movie in a blank-faced torpor.

Wow, 15 years ago? At the time I had to buy a ticket to another movie just so I could sneak in and see the highly controversial film, which of course, blew my little 15 year old mind away. And who could forget the Trent Reznor produced soundtrack featuring 90's acts like L7 and the Cowboy Junkies. It's really a time-capsule of a moment in film making and music.

When you walk into Natural Born Killers, you wonder what drugs the makers were taking. And maybe for a little bit you might want to partake as well, but it’s probably best to not. Regardless of one’s sobriety whilst watching Natural Born Killers, there is no denying that is both a trip and a ride, which is fair enough as much of it is a road picture. My review after the jump.
The film follows Mickey and Mallory Knox (Woody Harrelson, Juliette Lewis); two kids in love with a taste for murder. The film starts with them running havoc over a diner, and from the get go, Stone gets a great comic sensibility, with the deaths exaggerated to Looney Tunes sensibilities, but like someone who has experienced death up close, he seems unable to romanticize what they’re doing, his director’s eye makes you also feel queasy in partaking.

Natural Born Killers is the black sheep of the Oliver Stone filmography. Though it has received some critical acclaim, it has never received the same treatment as Stone’s more prestigious films like Platoon, Born on The Fourth of July and JFK. This comes from a host of factors. First, at the time of its release, the movie ironically became the primary target for a movement against violence in television and film. Second, and more importantly, it doesn’t really feel like an Oliver Stone film. Stone’s films are typically epic and historic, larger than life in their content and the lessons they teach. Nbk is larger than life too, but in a very different way. It attacks our sensibility about culture and the way we sense things. It tests our understanding of good and evil by proposing that no one is good.

Given man's unwavering fascination with woman, it's no surprise that the female star acts as the anchor to a dominant portion of horror pictures. I mean really, who wants to see a bare chested man tearin ass through the woods screaming at the top of his lungs while a bladed assailant nips at his heels? I don't - I know that much, although I'm certain there are plenty of men who would disagree (and that's okay with me, to each his own!). The simple fact remains however, women bring a unique appeal and certain sensual atmosphere to film that no man ever could. And it's not all about gratuitous T&A.

While von Trier's movies can be overwhelming at times, Haneke's can be very daunting and just like subjecting one self to torture. If von Trier loves to portray America without touching American soil, Haneke loves to teach his viewers a dose of their own medicine - patronizing American escapist movies is like committing a crime, there will be punishment sooner or later.

Chicago – Oliver Stone’s “Natural Born Killers” is easily one of the best films of the ’90s, an experimental, daring, visually mesmerizing study of not just violence but America’s obsession with it. At the peak of his directorial abilities, one of the best filmmakers of the ’80s and ’90s turned his lens on the way we turn evil people into tabloid heroes and he did it with such vibrant style that “Nbk” has just as much resonance as it did fifteen years ago.

Natural Born Killers blew my mind when I first saw it in theaters. This week.s new release of the director.s cut is my first chance to see it on Blu Ray, so does it still? Well, no two scenes are exactly the same style and I can.t go scene by scene, but I.ll do my best to explain why it still does.

The opening sequence looks like smooth film. It.s not gritty detail but it.s well preserved and the stark cuts to grainy footage stand out. Actually, the quick satanic flashes are the clearest and most detailed, but you.ll have to pause to see them.

On This Week's Show: Neil stuns the interwebs by once again seeing none of the new movies this week, but Kevin swoops in to save the day with his reviews of Where the Wild Things Are and Law Abiding Citizen. However, due to the fact that Screen Gems releases total crap, neither of them were afforded a chance to see The Stepfather, but that doesn't stop the Fat Guys from offering their opinions. And speaking of opinions, in honor of Where the Wild Things Are, Kevin and Neil throw down a Fat Guy Five about great adaptations of children's books before Neil makes a relatively creepy revelation about himself at the climax of the show.
