question of the day: What non-hit of the 00s will be an acclaimed favorite by 2020?

22 December 2009 7:26 AM, PST | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

Today’s question comes from reader Patrick, who writes: In the 80's it was "A Christmas Story"; in the 90's it was "The Shawshank Redemption"--both films developed into monstrous hits after their initial box office failure in the next decade. So, I must ask: what do you predict will be the film of the 00's that didn't do all that well in its theatrical run but will be given its long overdue accolades as a classic in the 10's? (Basically a film that TNT will play endlessly--not that's there's anything wrong with that!) In other words: What non-hit of the 00s will be an acclaimed favorite by 2020? I’ve got a few possibles: »

The Walking Dead– Compendium Volume One | Image Comics

Written by Robert Kirkman |  Art by Charlie Adlard, Cliff Rathburn, and Tony Moore

This is how it starts. Life is normal. The days go by. The night puts us to sleep. And then we wake up and realize we’re surrounded by zombies. In an instant, your enemies are your friends, and some of your friends become enemies. People around the country are opening up and adapting to a new beginning; a place where you have to survive and to do so, by looking over your shoulder every five minutes. Because if you don’t, a zombie just might make a breakfast out of you.

Before the New Year brings in a new decade of technological advancement, celebrity scandal, and one hit wonders, fans of zombies need to make a quick pit stop to the local bookstore or online seller for The Walking Dead »

"The Walking Dead" Television Series (AMC)

Never in my life did I expect to hear Frank Darabont's name in the same sentence as "The Walking Dead," but fate apparently had other plans. Seriously, can you believe that Robert Kirkman's zombie-ridden comic book series will make the leap to live-action television on the same network as the amazing "Mad Men" with Darabont's expert vision at the helm? With movies like "The Shawshank Redemption" and "The Mist" to his name, there's no doubt that Darabont »

First Run Grabs Docu Filled with Nightmares: Tales From the Script

If you ever wanted to find an irritable bunch of people working in Hollywood, you wouldn't have to go much further than the names in the screenwriter's directory. Morgan Freeman: He makes any movie better, but in 'Invictus' he's finally a great actor again

12 December 2009 9:28 AM, PST | EW.com - The Movie Critics | See recent EW.com - The Movie Critics news »

Whenever you sit down to watch a movie, it's always a welcome moment when the name Morgan Freeman appears in the opening credits. Whether he's playing God in Bruce Almighty, a saintly janitor in Million Dollar Baby, or a judge, detective, mechanic, or prison inmate, you can rest assured that each and every moment Morgan Freeman is on-screen, the movie, even if it's a dog, will snap to attention, and that Freeman, even in a nothing role, will take the lines he’s been asked to deliver and, through the sheer magnetism of his presence, turn them into something forceful and vibrant and compelling. »

'One Tree Hill': Jana Kramer's Top 5 fave films

7 December 2009 7:56 PM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Jana Kramer, who guest stars on Monday's "One Tree Hill," has eclectic tastes in film.

Kramer, 26, who plays Alex Dupre, shared her Top 5 favorite films:

1. "The Shawshank Redemption"

2. "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days"

3. "The Proposal"

4. "The Cutting Edge"

5. "Zombieland"

We definitely have issues with a couple of those films, but big props for including one of our recent favorites "Zombieland" and one of our all-time guilty pleasures, "The Cutting Edge."

In Monday's episode of "Oth," Brook (Sophia Bush) is trying to accept Julian's (Austin Nichols) reaction to Alex's (Kramer) crisis, while Nathan (James Lafferty) and Haley (Bethany Joy Galeotti) prep for the family move overseas to Barcelona. Also, Clay (Robert Buckley) is still scheming to win back Nathan as a client with Quinn's (Shantel VanSanten) help.

What do you think of Jana's picks? A pretty fun bunch, eh?

Are Movie Review Ratings Outdated?

3 December 2009 4:01 PM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Last week i wrote an article questioning why movies with low average review ratings, like New Moon, break box office records regardless. It got me thinking about the whole concept of rating a movie, and whether ‘marks out of ten’ was really still a useful film criticism tool.

Here at Hug, like many modern movie blogs, we tend not to give numerical ratings. The reason, on my part at least, is because criticizing a work of art that has taken hundreds of people many many months to create is pretentious enough. To then go on to attribute it an arbitrary numerical value seems crass. Now, i appreciate the reasons why a grading is given. Some people don’t want to trawl through lines and lines of text to decipher whether a film is worth watching. A large percentage of casual movie goers just look at the number of stars at the bottom, »

Three New Nightmare on Elm Street Photos

3 December 2009 12:19 AM, PST | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

Warner Brothers has released a new photos from the highly anticipated reboot of “A Nightmare on Elm Street.”

A Nightmare on Elm Street” synopsis: Freddy Krueger returns in “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” a contemporary re-imagining of the horror classic. A group of suburban teenagers share one common bond: they are all being stalked by Freddy Krueger, a horribly disfigured killer who haunts them in their dreams. As long as they stay awake, they can protect one another…but when they sleep, there is no escape.

Donning Freddy’s trademark fedora, red-and-green striped sweater, and four-bladed glove is Academy Award nominee Jackie Earle Haley (”Little Children,” “Watchmen”). The film is being directed by award-winning music video and commercial director Samuel Bayer (Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” Green Day’s “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”), marking his feature film debut.

The teens who are terrorized by Freddy Krueger are played by an ensemble of young actors, »

Scott Sigler - Inside Stephen King's Terrifying (and Sometimes Terrible) Movie Adaptations

I know, I know: We've all asked before (and will probably ask again) why Hollywood always seem to butcher Stephen King's stories. That complaint seems to come up all the time, but it's no longer entirely accurate. In fact, it's hard to remember where this perception came from: After all, King is the storyteller behind the movies The Shawshank Redemption, Misery, The Green Mile, The Shining and many others. New Images And Official Synopsis From A Nightmare On Elm Street Remake

2 December 2009 4:53 AM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

In 2010, Platinum Dunes and New Line Cinema will be bringing your nightmares to life once again with a polished remake and revival of one of the most iconic horror franchises in the history of cinema – A Nightmare on Elm Street. Donning the glove and fedora this time around is Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen), starring alongside the crispy dream stalker will be Rooney Mara as Nancy.

But of course you know all this already (we hope), the real news here is that three new stills have been released for the movie, which is arguably the biggest horror remake of all time.

Next to Hellraiser, this film is the one I’ve wanted to see remade the most, due to the advances in technology the studio could really go to town on the dream sequences. Having said that I’ve also seen the Friday the 13th remake and I’m currently crossing »

This week: Stuart Heritage's top five moral dilemmas on film

The moral conundrum at the heart of new Cameron Diaz film The Box isn't whether or not you should see it – because reviewers seem pretty adamant that you absolutely shouldn't – it's this: would you push a button that gave you a million dollars, even if you knew it meant that a stranger would die? Fiendish. You would, obviously, but it's still quite fiendish. Here are five other cinematic moral dilemmas, along with their solutions …

The Dark Knight

Two boats filled with explosives – should passengers save themselves by blowing up the other vessel? Yes! They live in Gotham City, so it's not like they have anything to live for. Best-case scenario is that they survive and then a fat bloke dressed as a penguin comes along and kills them after a fortnight. They'd be doing the other boat a favour, »

‘The Orphanage’ Remake Loses Its Director

20 November 2009 2:22 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Back in August we reported on the fact that prolific film actor/editor/producer/director, Larry Fessenden, was attached to direct the upcoming inevitable remake of Juan Antonio Bayona’s excellent Spanish-language horror film, The Orphanage (or “El orfanato” to use its Spanish name). Fessenden had reportedly co-written the script with the ultra-busy Guillermo del Toro (who produced the original and is performing the same duties for the remake), and was tapped to bring the creepy tale to English-speaking audiences who may not have seen (or maybe not even have heard of) the original.

However, just a few short months later the guys over at JoBlo have learned exclusively from Fessenden himself that he most likely won’t be directing The Orphanage remake. On the set of his upcoming project, the post-apocalyptic vampire film Stake Land (Fessenden is producing), he told Joblo the following:

The Orphanage was two years of waiting. »

Jail Movie Review

Review: Jail; Cast: Neil Nitin Mukesh, Manoj Bajpai, Mugdha Godse, Arya Babbar, Rahul Singh, Chetan Pandit; Director: Madhur Bhandarkar; Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Madhur Bhandarkar has done it again. From “Jail”, one expected a gritty, hard-hitting and thought-provoking drama. Bhandarkar delivers all this and lots more.

Before one starts drawing any comparisons, let’s make one thing clear – “Jail” isn’t “The Shawshank Redemption”. The only similarity is that they both tell the story of prison inmates. Other than that. »

Freeman Settles Car Crash Dispute

5 November 2009 2:06 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Morgan Freeman's legal woes regarding a 2008 car accident are over - the actor has reportedly settled a lawsuit against him.

The Shawshank Redemption star, who broke his arm and shoulder in the crash, was facing a court date with his passenger Demaris Meyer next year, but he has chosen to settle instead.

Meyer filed a lawsuit in February, alleging the actor had been drinking alcohol in the hours leading up to the crash, which happened in Mississippi last August.

She claimed she sustained a broken wrist, a torn labrum in her shoulder and various other bruises and lacerations.

Meyer, who owned the crashed vehicle Freeman was driving, sued for damages to cover medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering.

The settlement details have not been released. »

John C. Reilly And Mary Louise Parker Get Painted Red

5 November 2009 6:47 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

I had been assuming all along that in Red, the adaptation of the DC Comics book, Morgan Freeman would be playing the titular retired CIA officer who is surprised when assassins show up to kill him. Not only was it the name of his character in The Shawshank Redemption, of course, but who's better than Morgan Freeman at playing the guy you think you can take because he's old, only to destroy you? But in a new THR article, we learn that Bruce Willis is apparently playing the assassin, leaving Freeman's role completely up in the air. John C. Reilly and Mary Louise Parker have been added as well, with Reilly as another retired agent convinced everyone is out to kill him, and Parker as Willis's romantic interest. Despite the giant cast, Red isn't a studio movie-- at least, not yet. It's currently up for offer at the American Film »
