Will the Original Captain Kirk Be in Star Trek 2?

21 October 2009 10:27 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

The last Star Trek film was by all accounts a huge success, both financially and critically. The reboot brought in $384 million worldwide since its May 2009 release and with the DVD soon to hit store shelves November 17th, the financial gain is sure to continue. Director J.J. Abrams, along with writers Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci managed to reinvent the Roddenberry franchise without the use of *gasp* William Shatner.

Some people questioned why they wouldn’t bring Shatner on board for the reboot - not because he is the greatest actor in the world, but rather because he essentially Is the embodiment of Star Trek. Our friends at Cinema Blend pointed us towards The West Australian, who were at a Los Angles press conference promoting the Star Trek DVD, where J.J. Abrams addressed that very topic and it looks like William Shatner May (not will) show up in the new Star Trek sequel. …

Dune writer hired to get Bourne 4 back on track

21 August 2009 5:40 PM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Universal is keeping its plans for a fourth Bourne movie on track by hiring a new writer, it has been reported.

Writer George Nolfi was due to hand in his screenplay in June. But at the end of July, franchise star Matt Damon said they still didn't have a script for the next instalment.

The studio has now hired Josh Zetumer to write a "parallel script", says The Hollywood Reporter.

Zetumer, a Hollywood newcomer, is gaining a reputation after penning a big-screen remake of Dune for director Peter Berg and Paramount. That project was due out in 2010 but there's been no casting and production has not yet started, so it's likely to be after that when it hits the big screen.

Nolfi, who worked on The Bourne Ultimatum, has been busy writing, producing and directing The Adjustment Bureau, an adaptation of a Philip K. Dick short story which will also star Matt Damon. …

Bourne 4 Gets A New Writer

21 August 2009 8:38 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

The fourth installment in the successful Bourne franchise has been in the works for a good while now, always edging ever-closer to actually happening, with every announcement that “the story is being worked on” and that they’re trying to “get it right.” We reported a few weeks ago that the next Bourne movie may be coming later rather than sooner, and last week star Matt Damon told Entertainment Weekly, “[We] have a story and we don’t have script.”

That doesn’t sound too promising…

However, it seems that things have picked up a bit on the Bourne 4 front as Universal has signed writer Josh Zetumer to pen what is being described as a, “parallel script.”

Zetumer hasn’t written any completed film so far, but has written the scripts for Villain (currently in production), Peter Berg’s Dune remake and The Infiltrator, a Warner Bros. project which has Leonardo DiCaprio attached to star. …

Exclusive First Look At ‘Compulsions’ Teaser

20 August 2009 12:06 PM, PDT | Tubefilter.tv | See recent Tubefilter News news »

We got an early teaser (above) of new thriller web series Compulsions, which is still in post-production. This one piqued our interest early, with a few notable web series names in the mix. Stars Craig Frank (The Crew, Private High Musical) and Annemarie Pazmino (Sorority Forever) are recognizable to web fans. And as of now, the only other announced cast member is Janna Bossier. A few other recognizable faces make an appearance but are being kept under wraps. The basic setup is that even completely normal people have hidden and often dark desires, or compulsions, that are kept inside and never acted upon. Of course it would be a lot more interesting to find out what would happen if they did act upon them. And that's where this series picks up. Three leads, three different compulsions. One of them is sadism. Writer-creator Bernie Su said they are "trying to push …

Iron Man tie-in comic reveals details of Mickey Rourke's Whiplash

19 August 2009 12:10 PM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

When the first images surfaced of Mickey Rourke as the villainous Whiplash in Iron Man 2, fans weren't too impressed with the character's rather rough-and-ready appearance.

But a new comic book series being published in the run-up to the film indicates that Rourke's primitive costume develops into a sophisticated armour, as you can see in the images above and below.

Teaser footage screened at San Diego Comic-Con showed Rourke as a Russian criminal who somehow gets his hands on technology to create electrically-charged whips.

He takes the name Whiplash and will be a combination of the comic book foe of that name as well as another baddie called Crimson Dynamo.

Marvel Comics has announced it is launching a four-issue Iron Man vs Whiplash limited series in November to get superhero fans up to speed on the movie version of the villain.

Two comic book preview images included here show Whiplash in Iron Man-style armour, …

Treknobabble #69: Make a Difference

10 June 2009 9:33 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Treknobabble [1] is a continuing series of columns written by uber-Trekkie Reed Farrington leading up to and following the release of J.J. Abrams Star Trek movie. “Don’t let them promote you. Don’t let them transfer you. Don’t let anything take you off the bridge of that ship. Because while you’re there, you can make a difference.” - Kirk to Picard before Picard convinces Kirk to help him, resulting in Kirk’s "death". Hopefully, when you try to make a difference, you won’t end up dying like Kirk. But that’s the risk I suppose that’s worth taking. I guess it’s the same message that’s in the latest movie when Pike dares Kirk to do better than Kirk’s father. And in a famous Kirk soliloquy from an Original Series’ episode, “Return to Tomorrow,” Kirk passionately says, “Risk is our business.” I’ve been …

Jj Abrams Says Shatner and Khan Are Possible in Star Trek Sequel

16 May 2009 2:26 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

MTV got a chance to grill Star Trek director Jj Abrams about what we could expect in the inevitable sequel. Of course, screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman have not yet started on the announced sequel, so anything at this point is just speculation. But Abrams admits that the alternative universe timeline allows them to deviate from Trek canon. When I polled the slashfilm followers on Twitter a week ago, the three most popular ideas were: The Original Crew vs. The Borg, the return of William Shatner and of course, Khannnn!!!! The last two pose a big problem. Shatner’s Kirk died on in the climax of the 1994 film Star Trek: Generations. I argued in the video blog last week that the alternative timeline means that Kirk’s death didn’t happen, at least not in the way it occurred in Generations, and that the Star Fleet Captain could return in a sequel, …

The Shatner ending

12 May 2009 9:20 AM, PDT | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

We all know the public spectacle William Shatner made when he learned he wouldn't even be asked to do a cameo in the recently successful J.J. Abrams directed Star Trek reboot. It's not that they didn't want him in the film. In trying to be faithful to the Star Trek cannon, Abrams and writers' Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci wanted to come up with a way to bring him back that made sense to the story considering he died in Star Trek: Generations. They did manage to come up with something and …

Santa Monica, California — This past weekend, $76.5 million worth of people saw Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Leonard Nimoy onscreen in J.J. Abrams' blockbuster "Star Trek" reboot. The one person they didn't see, however, is larger-than-life "Trek" icon William Shatner.

During the course of the film's production, a bizarre battle of words erupted between Abrams and the 78-year-old original Captain Kirk over a never-filmed, top-secret scene. Recently, we got the spoiler-heavy details on the very different ending once intended to be Nimoy and Shatner's final time together onscreen.

"We did write a Shatner scene," Roberto Orci, one of the film's writers and producers, explained. "And we were ultimately split internally. We didn't want it …

Open Forum Friday: Did William Shatner Get the Shaft in Star Trek?

8 May 2009 1:54 PM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

As many people are no doubt aware, J.J. Abrams's Star Trek is a prequel of sorts, going back in time to tell the tale of the young Enterprise crew members as they make the transition from Starfleet Academy to active service. However, despite the fact that they wanted to reinvent the franchise and distance it from all the previous movies and TV shows, the new movie still has one major connection to the past: Leonard Nimoy. While his role makes sense due to the story's focus on the Romulans and Vulcans, I'm sure a lot of people who will see the movie are going to ask, where was William Shatner? During development of the film, there were a lot of rumours saying that Shatner was pretty angry about being left out. I guess that's understandable, but I'm wondering if J.J. Abrams had a good reason for not writing him into the movie. …

Not All Treks Are Created Equal: Ranking the ‘Star Trek’ Films

8 May 2009 8:44 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – With the eleventh (and best) “Star Trek” movie landing in theaters today, we thought we’d take a look back at the ten-pack that came before, the films that defined the Trek universe (along with the TV incarnations, of course).

The “Star Trek” filmography is wildly varying in quality, stretching the spectrum from beloved sci-fi classic to total disaster. Which one was the worst? Which was the pre-J.J. Abrams best? Let us guide the way where so many have gone before.

10. “Star Trek V: The Final Frontier

Easily the worst of the Trek films, original series, or Next Generation cast, it’s honestly surprising that the franchise could survive a film this bad. If “The Next Generation” TV series hadn’t injected life back into the solar system of characters that Gene Roddenberry created and the universe was simply film-based at this point, the series probably would have stopped after five films. …

Leonard Nimoy Talks 'Star Trek'

3 May 2009 9:05 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

For the old farts among us — that is to say, those of us at 40's doorstep and beyond — there's a strange schizophrenia taking place with regards to the new Star Trek: it's hard for us to imagine anyone other than the original actors playing those parts. The original series and its beloved actors were so closely identified with their iconic characters, that some, like William Shatner, had a very difficult time finding work in the years immediately following the cancellation of original series in 1969; such was the curse of typecasting. In the case of Leonard Nimoy, he even wrote a book that irked many fans called "I Am Not Spock", in the hopes of separating himself from the fictional character with whom so many had identified him.

Then there's the hundreds of novels, tomes, games, toys, etc. For the past several decades, anytime Kirk or Spock's visage was required, …

Trekking With Tim, Day Seven: Star Trek: Generations

1 May 2009 10:34 AM, PDT | Rotten Tomatoes | See recent Rotten Tomatoes news »

Where to start with this movie? Star Trek: Generations is almost totally impenetrable for much of its running time, before it takes a strange, elegiac turn toward the end. It does little to introduce Picard and the rest of the Next Generation crew, and it requires an absurd amount of insider knowledge. I can't say I liked it, or even understood most of it, though its ending helps to redeem it a little. Generations was released a few months after Star Trek: The Next Generation had gone off the air. The movie requires a familiarity with the characters -- something …
