Keira Knightley Is "My Fair Lady"...

3 hours ago | SneakPeek | See recent SneakPeek news »

Actress Keira "Pride And Prejudice" Knightley will play 'Eliza Doolittle' in the upcoming remake of the 1964 musical feature "My Fair Lady".

The original film was based on the stage musical "My Fair Lady", adapted from the play "Pygmalion" by George Bernard Shaw, who was inspired by a play by classic Greek author Ovid.

The new screenplay is written by Emma "Sense And Sensibility" Thompson.

"...In London, 'Henry Higgins', an arrogant, irascible, misogynistic professor of phonetics, believes it is the accent and tone of one's voice which determines a person's prospects in society.

He boasts to new acquaintance 'Colonel Hugh Pickering', that he can teach any woman to speak so "properly" that he could pass her off as a duchess at an embassy ball, pointing to a young flower seller in the street called 'Eliza Doolittle', who has a strong Cockney accent..."

Pickering bets Higgins that it can't be done.

By All Means, Judge These Books by Their (New) Covers

2 December 2009 9:01 PM, PST | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

This fall, bookshelves are as colorful as the changing foliage, thanks to the decision by several publishers to roll out redesigns of beloved titles. “Publishers realize that we are catering to readers, including students, who are more design-savvy and more visual. In a competitive marketplace, the challenge is to get the consumer to spot your book and pick it up,” says Elda Rotor, the editorial director of Penguin Classics. Late this summer, Penguin, long a purveyor of iconic black-and-orange-themed paperbacks, introduced “Couture Classics.” The publishing house commissioned fashion illustrator Ruben Toledo to “dress” some of its best-selling heroines: Hester Prynne (The Scarlet Letter), Catherine Earnshaw (Wuthering Heights), and Elizabeth Bennet (Pride and Prejudice). His baroque but modern designs give sultry new life to those familiar plots and characters. Last month, Penguin released Victorian novels, such as The Picture of Dorian Gray and Jane Eyre, in clothbound editions featuring lacy patterns »

Jones Dies At 75

2 December 2009 5:36 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Beloved British actress Maggie Jones has died, aged 75.

The actress, who played Blanche Hunt on the long-running soap Coronation Street, passed away on Wednesday after failing to recover from an operation in October in Hope Hospital in Manchester, England.

Actor William Roache, who plays her on-screen son-in-law Ken Barlow, has paid tribute to the star.

He says, "Maggie was a big part of the Barlow family and a brilliant actress. She was a tower of strength, physically frail but mentally strong as an ox and sharp as someone half her age.

"She had an amazing dry wit and was as funny if not funnier than Blanche."

Jones began her career on the stage, appearing in stage shows Pride and Prejudice and The Woman on London's West End, before she made her TV debut as a policewoman on Coronation Street in 1961.

She first appeared as Blanche Hunte on the soap from 1974 to 1976, before she rejoined the cast in 1999.

The role won her two British Soap Awards for Best Comedy Performance in 2005 and 2008.

In 1971, Jones married John Oliver Stansfield, who died in 1999. »

She’s having a problem with her boyfriend. No comment.” The 24-year-old beauty – who has been dating Rupert, 28, since 2005 when they met on the set of ‘Pride and Prejudice’- also admitted she doesn’t view fame in a positive way because the definition has changed so much. She explained: “If I’d thought about what fame meant when I was younger, it probably would have been for your name to be respected for something you do well. »

Firth: 'I'm Too Old To Be A Sex Symbol'

24 November 2009 4:16 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

British heart-throb Colin Firth is convinced he'd never get any female attention if he wasn't an actor - and insists he's too old to keep carrying his sex symbol mantle.

The Love Actually star shot to fame with his portrayal of Mr. Darcy in 1995's Pride And Prejudice, famously winning the hearts of female film fans by appearing in soaking wet clothes.

But Firth, 49, has always struggled to understand his lusty fans - and is adamant the attention will soon stop now he's hit middle-age.

He tells Britain's Hello! magazine, "I think I'm getting a bit old for that stuff now, aren't I? I suppose that because of the profession I'm in, I do get a certain amount of attention that I probably would not get if I had not been known.

"I certainly wouldn't get the attention I get if I hadn't been on screen." »

The Twilight Saga: New Moon Movie Review

19 November 2009 8:00 PM, PST | MoviesOnline.ca | See recent MoviesOnline news »

I just got back from seeing New Moon!  I am not fond of how the books are written, but fell in love with the story.  I watched Twilight and really loved the esoteric ambiance and level of feeling it brought out in me, so I looked forward to seeing New Moon.  However, I did not have fangirl expectations or a critics eye, as I accept the story for what it is...Edward and Bella's story.

I am sad to say that New Moon disappointed.  I don't know if it's because of the new director or the rush to finish the movie but I found the story dragged excessively and lacked the ambiance of the first one.  I loved that they included poetry and poetical sense, but it was inconsistent and several times I felt the music didn't fit the tone of what was happening. (Where was that beautiful score of the first movie? »

Wright directs Hanna

17 November 2009 3:20 AM, PST | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

So The Soloist may have landed with a bit of thud, but Joe Wright is still the man behind Atonement and Pride And Prejudice, so the announcement of his next project is rather ear-catching. Wright is reportedly about to be set to helm Hanna, which features a fourteen year old Eastern European girl, born and bred to be a ruthless assassin. Yeah, quite the change from his previous projects indeed. Hanna tries to escape her life of murder by befriending a French family, but is soon pulled back... »

Atonement Director Joe Wright Looking for Action with Hanna

17 November 2009 12:16 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Joe Wright may have faltered recently with The Soloist, but his Pride and Prejudice and Atonement were strong enough to convince me to follow his rising career. He was slated to take on Indian Summer with Cate Blanchett, but now that that project has been put on hold due to budgetary concerns, it seems that Wright is eying an action-adventure thriller, Hanna. Action is an entirely new genre for Wright, but it's one I think he'll take to quite nicely given his propensity for luscious visuals. According to the THR Heat Vision Blog: The story centers on a 14-year-old Eastern European girl who has been raised by her father to be a cold-blooded killing machine. She connects with a French family, forms a friendship with their daughter and goes through the pangs of adolescence. When the girl is dragged back to her father’s world and discovers that she was »

The King's Speech draws great British cast

16 November 2009 5:28 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Colin Firth joined by Helena Bonham Carter, Michael Gambon, Timothy Spall and Derek Jacobi in biopic about reluctant wartime monarch George VI

A roll call of British acting talent has been added to the cast list of The King's Speech, a drama about George VI's struggles to overcome his stammer. Already on board were Colin Firth as the reluctant monarch, who was pushed on to the throne after the 1936 abdication crisis, and Geoffrey Rush as Lionel Logue, the unorthodox Australian speech therapist who helped him.

As the second son of George V, the shy prince universally known as Bertie was the spare to the heir and seemed destined to lead a quiet life. But when his brother David, who was crowned as Edward VIII, chose to abdicate to marry Wallis Simpson, Bertie was thrust into the spotlight. However, with the help of Logue, he not only overcame his speech impediment, »

Majestic Cast Join Colin Firth in The King’s Speech

14 November 2009 1:11 PM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

You may not have heard the name Tom Hooper but you’ll know his work.

Cutting his teeth on UK TV with Prime Suspect, EastEnders (and Byker Grove…) Hooper made the leap to work on a broader canvas with the epic HBO serials Longford and John Adams and whose recent work, The Damned United, made great use of Michael Sheen’s uncanny ability to embody larger than life characters.

His next project is The King’s Speech, a character piece which tells the story of King George IV’s relationship with a speech therapist as he fights to lose his nervous stammer and live up to his royal duty. Hooper continues to work with talented actors and the key roles here are taken by Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush as the King and therapist respectively.

Tonight we’ve learned from The Hollywood Reporter that the project has attracted a very »

Movies This Week: Dogme Alums Get An Education with Bronson

13 November 2009 11:00 AM, PST | Slackerwood | See recent Slackerwood news »

Happy Friday the 13th! Walk under a ladder, hang out with a black cat, and see some movies.  It's a very British heavy release week; three British films are opening in town (two with Emma Thompson in them). Two films new to Austin are directed by Dogme 95 alums. You know, the minimalist film movement started by Lars von Triers and others to thumb their noses at Hollywood and big budgets, with a manifesto demanding a vow of cinematic chastity?  Can you guess which film on the list is anti-Dogme?

An Education -- It's London in the 1960s, and a teenage girl encounters a playboy in this coming of age story.  Directed by Lone Scherfig (Italian for Beginners, Dogme #12 ), with a slew of memorable actors, including Dollhouse's Olivia Williams, Rosamund Pike (Pride and Prejudice), Dominic Cooper (The History Boys), and the inestimable Emma Thompson.  Only a select few were able »

Show me the Money | Mark Lawson

12 November 2009 1:30 PM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

I'm thrilled that Martin Amis's great novel is to be adapted for screen – but the omens aren't good

Having always been sceptical about television's obsession with costume drama, I've never really understood what it must be like for the admirers of Jane Austen when, every two or three weeks, as it seems, a new production of Pride and Prejudice or Emma is announced.

Yesterday, though, I experienced the combination of excitement and defensive apprehension which must affect Jane-ites when they learn that yet another young British actress is being measured for a bonnet. Martin Amis's Money, a key book for my generation of English students and fiction readers, is to be dramatised on BBC2, bringing to an end a quarter of a century of aborted attempts since its publication in 1984.

Whereas the followers of Miss Austen sit nervously in front of their sets worrying if Mr Darcy will be dashing enough, »

Joe Wright Is Not Directing My Fair Lady

1 November 2009 9:55 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Well, we can't be right all the time. Last week we brought you the news from the trades (it was in Variety! It's not our fault!) that Joe Wright, director of Atonement and Pride and Prejudice, would be reteaming with Keira Knightley for a new version of My Fair Lady, scripted by Emma Thompson. It turns out that at least 33.3% of that story is completely untrue, as discovered by Screenrush when they asked Joe Wright about it at the London Film Festival."It's not happening! It's all a lie!" opines Wright. "I thought about it for a couple of minutes and decided not to do it, and then suddenly it got into the press that I was doing it." And his motives for turning it down? "No reason really. You get a lot of scripts and you read them and..."So that's Danny Boyle and Joe Wright out of the director's chair. »

Joe Wright Not Directing 'My Fair Lady'

30 October 2009 3:33 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Well, here's a spanner in the works: Joe Wright directly contradicts reports from this past weekend that he'll be directing My Fair Lady. For the better part of two years, Keira Knightley has been the odds-on choice to update Eliza Doolittle, and we wrote that she had beaten out Scarlett Johansson for the role just a few days ago. As part of that announcement, Wright's name was dropped as the new director. But not according to him.

You can see in the video below (from Screenrush) that Wright isn't making the movie, plain and simple. It's a natural connection, though, because his first two films - Pride and Prejudice and Atonement - both starred Knightley. Plus, after the disappointing returns of The Soloist, Wright might have been reaching for a sure thing.

No such luck, though: »

Hampshire's Heartbreak Over Husband's Dementia

30 October 2009 5:16 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

British actress Susan Hampshire is dreading leaving home for an upcoming theatre tour - because her husband Sir Eddie Kulukundis' dementia is worsening.

The veteran star has been married to the theatre impresario for nearly thirty years and has been nursing him since his health began to fail a year ago.

And she's worried about leaving her partner alone as she prepares to go on a U.K. theatre tour with stage show Pride and Prejudice.

She tells Britain's Daily Express, "I'm worried about leaving Eddie. His memory is going. He's had dementia for about a year but it's definitely getting worse.

"I have arranged for someone to come in and take care of him but I will come home as many nights as I can."

A source adds, "This is very sad. Susan and Eddie are one of the most devoted couples in showbusiness and he is universally liked." »
