A Note Regarding Spoilers

The following FAQ entries may contain spoilers. Only the biggest ones (if any) will be covered with spoiler tags. Spoiler tags have been used sparingly in order to make the page more readable.

For detailed information about the amounts and types of (a) sex and nudity, (b) violence and gore, (c) profanity, (d) alcohol, drugs, and smoking, and (e) frightening and intense scenes in this movie, consult the IMDb Parents Guide for this movie. The Parents Guide for Clueless can be found here.

Clueless is based on a screenplay by American film director Amy Heckerling, who loosely based it on the 1816 comic novel Emma by English novelist Jane Austen [1775-1817].

Cher (Alicia Silverstone) is 16. Josh (Paul Rudd) is a college freshman, making him 18, give or take a year according to his birthdate. At the time of filming, Silverstone was actually 18 and Rudd was almost 26.

No. It was entirely fictious.

What does RSVP mean?

In the scene where Cher is telling about the garden party she gave for her father's birthday, she mentions "I put R.S.V.P. 'cause it was a sit-down dinner, but some people came that, like, did not R.S.V.P.." RSVP is frequently placed on invitations to social events when the party-giver wants to know whether or not the guest is planning to attend. It comes from the French phrase, "Répondez s'il vous plaît," which translates literally as "Respond, if it pleases you" or, more pointedly, as "Please respond" or "A response is requested."
