The Goon Put on Hold for David Fincher

25 November 2009 4:10 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

It’s been a while since we heard anything regarding the movie adaptation of Robert Powell’s cult comic book, The Goon. In fact, last time we wrote about the movie was all the way back in March when we got to see some concept art and the first official poster. Given the enthusiastic reaction to that first look, we were beginning to wonder why there was so much radio silence on the project. Now, thanks to Comic Book Resources, we have the answer.

According to Goon creator, Eric Powell, there has actually been a fair bit of progress on the movie. Not only is the script for the film is complete, but CG animation house Blur Studios has begun producing a variety of test material. At this point, the only holdup is producer David Fincher, who has to complete filming on his own movie before he can turn to Goon in earnest. »

James McTeigue's 'The Raven' to Mix Real Edgar Allan Poe and Fiction

24 November 2009 12:22 AM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

James McTeigue is currently developing "The Raven", a fictional story about what would happen if a serial killer challenged poet Edgar Allan Poe to solve a series of killings inspired by his own stories. On Saturday, November 21, the director sat down with Sci Fi Wire to talk about how the famous author and his works inspire McTeigue's thriller film.

"'The Raven', 'Tell-Tale Heart', 'Premature Burial', 'Murders in the Rue Morgue'," McTeigue mentioned several Poe's poems that will give ideas for the film's murders. "There's a whole lot of them. It's actually a pretty cool concept."

Though the film is a complete fiction, McTeigue has planned to present the film's major character complete with the real details. "It's a total fiction, but obviously Poe is, like, a well-known and much-beloved character," he explained. "People know a lot about him, the way he was a bit of a rascal, »

Exclusive Interview With Ren Klyce, Sound Designer of Fight Club and Where the Wild Things Are

15 November 2009 3:07 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

This week, the Fight Club starts again with the release on Blu-ray of a tenth anniversary edition of David Fincher's fan favourite. Every frame of the film was scrutinised by the director, or so it says here, in order to ensure the transfer was reflective, finally, of the ideal realisation of the film. That sentence alone has probably shifted a skip full of copies. What's likely to shift a heap more are the innovative interactive special features. After the break you can view my interview with Ren Klyce, the film's sound designer. As well as collaborating with Fincher since Se7en, he most recently earned the credits of supervising sound editor and sound re-recording mixer on Spike Jonze' Where the Wild Things Are. He's just the man to be out there plugging this new Fight Club disc too, as the best of the new special features revolves around his »

DVD Playhouse—November 2009

By

Allen Gardner

Watchmen—The Ultimate Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday »

Their Best Role: Brad Pitt and 'Fight Club'

12 November 2009 9:02 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Welcome to a new series here on Cinematical where we select an actor or actress and the role we think is their all time best.

Brad Pitt has taken on a myriad of roles over the years. He's fly fished, hunted down sadistic killers, played a romantic devil, dallied in thievery, suffered through pain in his Achilles, and even showed up as the notorious Jesse James. And while he may have earned Oscar nominations for his turn as a mental patient in 12 Monkeys and a backward-aging man in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, his best role lives in cult fandom as the corporation-loathing anarchist Tyler Durden in Fight Club.

I know. It's strange of me to pick this role out of the list -- especially in light of his time in 12 Monkeys. Fight Club was the film Edward Norton got recognized for -- not so much Brad Pitt. But »

Listen, Don't Watch: 10 Soundtracks Better Than Their Movies

12 November 2009 4:31 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Seven months ago, the movie formerly known as The Boat That Rocked had its UK theatrical release, followed up two months later with the DVD. Reviews at the time were so-so. Now the pic gets shipped state-side, renamed Pirate Radio and apparently with all the good parts taken out.

That said, the soundtrack contains 32 '60s classics from The Kinks to The Who to David Bowie — sending it straight to the "Listen, Don't Watch" category, and leaving us wondering if it belongs on our list of 10 Soundtracks Better Than Their Movies.

Kevin Spacey Says 'The Social Network' Will Be 'A Lot Funnier' Than You Think

10 November 2009 1:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

"Se7en." "Fight Club." "Zodiac." Good movies, all – some even great – yet not exactly laugh riots. Rightly or not, director David Fincher has a reputation for serving up dark fare – films that explore death, violence, fear, crime. But maybe Fincher's set on exploring fresh creative territory, stories and themes not present in his earlier work: first a love story in "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" and now, perhaps, a comedy in "The Social Network."

That's what Kevin Spacey, who's producing the film about the founding of Facebook, told MTV News' Josh Horowitz in a recent interview. "It's probably going to be a lot funnier than people might expect it to be," he said.

As Spacey told us this past summer, the film was fast-tracked with an aim toward shooting this year. Now the cast has been filled out – Jesse Eisenberg as Facebook top dog Mark Zuckerberg, Justin Timberlake »

David Fincher to "Reincarnate" Peter Proud

10 November 2009 12:55 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

After directing his next film, The Social Network, Academy Award-nominated director David Fincher (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) will reunite with screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker for the first time since the two paired on Seven in 1995. According to THR, Fincher is attached to direct a remake of the 1975 movie The Reincarnation of Peter Proud, which Walker will adapt from the book of the same name by Max Ehrlich.

The original film script, also written by Ehrlich, told the story of Peter Proud, a college professor who started investigating his dreams when he came to the realization that they were actually images from his own past life experiences. Part of the popular supernatural thriller movie trend of the mid-70s, Peter Proud was criticized for a subplot involving incest. Fincher and Walker are expected to stay true to the novel, but update it for a modern audience.

David Fincher And 'Se7en' Screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker Re-Team For 'Peter Proud' Adaptation

9 November 2009 1:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Fifteen years after working together on "Se7en," director David Fincher and screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker are reuniting for a new adaptation of Max Ehrlich's novel "The Reincarnation of Peter Proud," according to The Hollywood Reporter. The book was previously made into a 1975 movie by Ehrlich, who adapted his own work, and J. Lee Thompson, best known for helming the original "Cape Fear."

As with many films dealing with reincarnation, the plot is pretty ridiculous even if you believe in the concept. A college professor has nightmares involving a murder, which he eventually realizes was his own, from a previous life. And in the process of discovery, he unknowingly becomes romantically involved with his (past incarnation's) daughter.

Despite the silly and scandalous storyline, Ehrlich's book could lend itself to an interesting, Hitchcockian sort of psychological thriller. Unfortunately, Thompson's original film is apparently not good for much more than seeing a »

The Hollywood Reporter reports David Fincher is now attached to direct the adaptation of Max Ehrlich's novel "The Reincarnation of Peter Proud" for Columbia Pictures with his Seven screenwriter, Andrew Kevin Walker, aboard to pen the screenplay.

The story centers on a college professor who begins having recurring dreams and nightmares and, realizing they are images of a past life, decides to search out the source of the visions. With his girlfriend in tow, he discovers a woman and her grown-up daughter who are keys to his past life.

The THR article says the supernatural thriller drew heat for a subplot involving incest, but the director and writer will be heading back to the novel as the source material and will contemporize the story.

David Fincher Reincarnates 'Peter Proud'

9 November 2009 11:03 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Everything old is new again for David Fincher. He's brought in Se7en writer Andrew Kevin Walker to adapt the 1975 novel The Reincarnation of Peter Proud, which was also turned into a film that same year.

The Hollywood Reporter says Fincher will set up shop at Columbia, co-producing with Michael De Luca. Proud is a college professor who begins having strange nightmares that appear to include images from a previous life, so he starts to investigate what might be causing them. One of the nightmares involves murder - Murder! - and, at least in the movie, Margot Kidder.

This journey eventually leads him across the country to the mysterious woman he's been seeing in his dreams, but what does it mean? What does it all mean? »

‘Se7en’ Writer and Director Reunite For ‘Peter Proud’

9 November 2009 10:53 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Back in 1995, director David Fincher and screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker (The Wolfman) collaborated on what is now touted as a “crime classic” and “a blueprint for modern serial killer movies.” That movie was Se7en, and I totally agree with all the praise that’s been heaped upon it (it recently featured in our “Horror Plus” series).

Now, 14 years later, Fincher and Walker are going to be collaborating once more, this time on an adaptation of the novel The Reincarnation of Peter Proud for Columbia. THR’s Heat Vision Blog reports the news of their involvement, along with producer Michael De Luca (Blade, Ghost Rider). The author of the book, Max Ehrlich, adapted it into a movie in 1975 of the same name, so I guess in a way this movie is a remake by Fincher (there’s that “remake or new adaptation” question again). According to THR:

Columbia now set for Reincarnation reincarnation

9 November 2009 9:51 AM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

According to The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision blog, Columbia Pictures is now behind the David Fincher-directed remake of 1975’s The Reincarnation Of Peter Proud. Fincher had previously been working on the project for Paramount, where it had been in development for almost a decade.

The Reincarnation update reunites Fincher with SE7EN scripter Andrew Kevin Walker as well as Michael De Luca, who was president of production at New Line at the time of that serial-killer hit and will produce the new film with Alison Rosenzweig. The original movie, directed by J. Lee Thompson and scripted by Max Ehrlich from his novel, stars Michael Sarrazin and Margot Kidder in the tale of a man who is plagued by nightmares that turn out to be visions of a past life, and sets out to uncover their source. While the redux’s setting will be modernized, Fincher and Walker, who also co-scripted the upcoming Wolfman remake, »

Seven team reunite for 'Peter Proud'

9 November 2009 9:38 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

The writer and director of the classic flick Seven are teaming up for a new movie together. The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Blog report that Andrew Kevin Walker and David Fincher will team for "The Reincarnation of Peter Proud" for Columbia Pictures.

The story centers on a college professor who begins having recurring dreams and nightmares and, realizing they are images of a past life, decides to search out the source of the visions. With his girlfriend in tow, he discovers a woman and her grown-up daughter who are keys to his past life.

The trade reprts that the supernatural thriller drew heat for a subplot involving incest.

All that we need now is Brad Pitt starring and we've got a full set.

A previous adaptation of the Max Ehrlich novel was released in 1975, directed by J. Lee Thompson and starring Michael Sarrazin and Margot Kidder. »

David Fincher Explores The Reincarnation of Peter Proud

Director David Fincher and his former “Seven” writer Andrew Kevin Walker (Really? Two first names? That’s just greedy) will be remaking the 1975 supernatural thriller “The Reincarnation of Peter Proud” by Max Ehrlich, who wrote the novel and the movie adaptation for director J. Lee Thompson. The film didn’t set the world on fire, though apparently it did stir up a bit of controversy for including a subplot that involved incest. The story follows college professor Peter Proud, who begins having recurring dreams and nightmares and, realizing they are images of a past life, decides to search out the source of the visions for some answers. With his girlfriend in tow, our hero discovers a woman and her daughter may be keys to unlocking his past life, though perhaps he should just have left it all alone. Fincher Reunites The Se7en Team To Reincarnate Peter Proud

The writer/director tag team behind 1995's thriller masterpiece Se7en are getting back in the ring to tackle The Reincarnation of Peter Proud based on the novel of the same name. Seasoned thriller director David Fincher will be at the helm with Andrew Kevin Walker (who also wrote one of my favorites, Brainscan) at the quill and ink. The novelized Peter Proud was written in 1973 by Max Ehrlich who at the same time adapted his story into a screenplay to be later directed by J. Lee Thompson. According to THR, Proud is about a college professor who starts seeing progressively more terrifying visions of what he discovers to be a past life. When he reconnects with people who were a part of the life he once lived, he realizes he may be in more danger than he had planned on. Tossed into the mix is a weird subplot involving ... »
