Your cinematic birthdays for 12/02. If it's your big day, let us know.
Steven, Lucy and Warren
1894 Warren William, charming snake, pre-code movie star who was often paired with formidable actresses like Claudette Colbert (Imitation of Life, Cleopatra), Joan Blondell (Gold Diggers of 1933, Stage Struck) and Bette Davis (Three on a Match, Satan Met a Lady)
1914 Ray Walston, the Damn Yankees! devil had a lengthy career on screens small and large
1914 Adolph Green, musical giant of 'Comden & Green' fame. I can't even begin to choose a favorite song by that duo. Plus they wrote the screenplay to Singin' in the Rain!
1923 Maria Callas, La Divina. Fanny Ardant recently played her in Callas Forever. The next actress who'll have a go at her is Eva Mendes in Greek Fire
1925 Julie Harris was Oscar nominated for her film debut (The Member of the Wedding), co-starred with James Dean (East of Eden) and »

Celebrating cinematic folk, born on this day 11/23. Get out your kazoos.
Franco, Maxwell and Harpo. Half of the fun of building these posts
is these completely nonsensical groupings!
1859 Billy the Kid, outlaw. I've always thought it a mystery as to exactly why people routinely idolize characters whom they would never want to meet in real life. Murderers, criminals, thieves, (especially gangsters)... they all get the silver screen pedestal treatment. Billy has been portrayed dozens of times and Val Kilmer, Emilio Estevez, Kris Kristofferson, Buster Crabbe and Paul Newman have all done the job.
1888 Harpo Marx I'm embarrassed to say this but I can never remember which Marx Bros is which. When I watch 30s comedies, I almost always select a screwball romance.
1892 Erté artist over whom wee Nathaniel obsessed, wanting a whole animated movie to spring forth from his theatrical illustrations of ladies in elaborate headdresses and fab gowns.

It’s “The Wolfman Day” here at Filmshaft (or feels like it). After bringing fresh meat in the way of a new trailer and poster, some rather striking information has come to light, courtesy of Variety.
It has been a production full of delays, design alterations, director changes and additional shooting. At present, it seems like more than The Wolfman is cursed. Universal have now called in editors Walter Murch and Mark Goldblatt to save the day, and to stop a silver bullet killing the film off completely.
Both have impressive screen credits, and what it says about their hiring is open to wild speculation. Murch is a master sound-editing technician, whilst Goldblatt has cut some of the best action films in recent times (and Showgirls).
It all sounded so brilliant – to begin with. Benicio Del Toro starring in his first horror film; his lupine features accommodating the vision of the film, »

Another new teaser poster for All About Evil has hit the Net, and this one is screaming for a toothbrush, dental floss, and some Listerine. Maybe even gas, rags, and a match.
The new poster features the character "Adrian", the ummm ... foul-mouthed usher played by Noah Segan.
All About Evil is a wicked black comedy set in the world of a horror movie about a mousy librarian (Natasha Lyonne) who inherits her father's beloved but failing old movie house. In order to save the family business, she discovers her inner serial killer - and a legion of rabid gore fans - when she starts turning out a series of grisly shorts. What her fans don't realize yet is that the murders in the movies are all too real!
The film costars Thomas Dekker (Sarah Connor Chronicles, A Nightmare On Elm Street), Cassandra Peterson (Elvira), Mink Stole (Pink Flamingos, Serial Mom), Noah Segan (Deadgirl, »

Actress Gina Gershon is testing out her singing skills by releasing an album for children.
The Showgirls star has previously shown off her vocal talent in Broadway musical Cabaret and is currently performing in a New York revival of Bye Bye Birdie, but she's looking to appeal to a much younger audience with the light-hearted The Good, The Bad, and The Hungry.
She says, "I have a children's album coming out in a couple months. As soon as we get over this (Bye Bye Birdie), I'm gonna focus on that. The Good, The Bad, and The Hungry. It's for three year olds. It's very funny." »

Sebastian Gutierrez's new film, Women in Trouble, is about 10 women living in L.A. has an amazing ensemble cast which includes Emmanuelle Chirqui (Entourage) and Elizabeth Berkley (Showgirls, The L Word). A film about 10 different women's lives can hardly be summed up in a sentence or two, so I'll let stars Carla Gugino and Adrianne Palicki (Friday Night Lights) tell you why you should take interest in Women in Trouble. Take note, they're in character — as their on-screen stripper personas.
Warning: Nsfw language.
If that isn't enough information about the film for you, then allow me to expand on why I'm interested in seeing it, myself. Early reviews indicate that there are several sorts of bisexual flirting involved in the movie, including Adrianne's character, Holly, and Emmanuelle's Bambi agreeing to perform a "sister act" as call girls one night. However, "bad things happen" and it doesn't go off as planned. »

Oh, the joys of live theater. The final preview performance of the Broadway revival of Bye Bye Birdie was halted for about 20 minutes Wednesday night when the electronically controlled set failed to clear during a scene change. The curtain fell on the big-budget musical, which is slated to open Thursday night, and star John Stamos appeared in front of a lights-up auditorium to stall for time as technicians worked backstage. Stamos called out to fellow celebs in the audience, including comedian Don Rickles, who shouted out from his seat to rib the former Full House star to get a haircut. »

So what if I'm a few days late catching it. Be patient with me. My week has been a blur of horror... and not of the movie kind. Just pretend you haven't heard this crazy ass news yet and let me scoop my jaw up (before the pole dancing commences)
Showgirls 2?
What ?!? What!?
I'm speechless. Even if Gina Gershon, Paul Verhoeven, Elizabeth Berkeley and Joe Eszterhas aren't involved it's still so... What? Showgirls may be a masterpiece (see previous posts) but it's not the kind of masterpiece that can't use a random 15 years-later bastard sequel from entirely different people.
Except... Penny!
How great is it that Rena Riffel misspells "forward" while preparing to reprise the role of her life. I am filled with joy. Seriously. I'm about to burst from it.
I hope it's the worst movie of all time. And therefore the best.

Honestly, I’m at a lose for words. While I do own Paul Verhoeven’s deliriously awful 1995 epic cinematic fail “Showgirls” on DVD, I can’t imagine why anyone in their right mind would want a sequel. The film is kind of a like a bacterial infection in your crotch: Once you’ve had it, chances are you probably don’t want another one. According to the straight-shooters at Twitch, German director Marc Vorlander is preparing to unleash “Showgirls: The Story of Hope” on the public at-large. The strange little video on the film’s official website is beyond amusing, mostly because it feels like a sick joke perpetrated by a group of demented individuals who thoroughly enjoy torturing complete strangers. Regardless, my interest in piqued, and I plan to follow this one until it either spectacularly implodes or causes irreversible brain damage to everyone in my immediate family. »

For those of us hoping that Paul Verhoeven may one day return to his violent and campy b-movie roots, it still isn't looking likely to happen anytime soon. Until then, the only thing we have to turn to are the various direct-to-video sequels that have been churned out from his filmography. We've seen (or more likely, avoided) sequels to Starship Troopers, Basic Instinct and Hollow Man, and both Total Recall and Robocop are currently being prepped for remakes. Which leaves only one of his American films still untouched: the Razzie Award-winning Showgirls. Earlier this week a story surfaced over at German site Extratipp [1] about a potential sequel to Showgirls called Showgirls: The Story of Hope being written and directed by a guy named Marc Vorlander (whose IMDb page [2] is a completely blank slate). The movie would supposedly revolve around a minor character from the first film named Hope (Rena Riffel »

Get caught in a web of murder and lies as Lifetime Movie Network premieres the film adaptation of one of best-selling author Ann Rule's most popular crime books, Everything She Ever Wanted. Gina Gershon (Showgirls, Face/Off, Bound), Ryan McPartlin (TV's Living with Fran, TV's Chuck), Victor Garber (TV's Alias, Milk) and Rachel Blanchard (TV's Clueless, TV's 7th Heaven) star in the two-night, miniseries event. Part One of Ann Rule's Everything She Ever Wanted will premiere Saturday, November 14, at 8pm Et/9pm Pt, and Part Two will premiere Sunday, November 15, at 8pm Et/9pm Pt, on Lifetime Movie Network, Lifetime's sister network and the second highest rated women's channel. »

When I started seeing a number of sites on the Internet talking about Showgirls 2 -- aka Showgirls: The Story of Hope -- I groaned. Then I caught the supposed official website (Nsfw), and my first thought was: Suckers! There's just no way that one of the crappiest films of all time was getting a sequel marketed with a weird, newbie Dreamweaverish website like that -- even if the original is a sort of so-bad-it's-fun cult classic. But then I thought of those crappy photoshopped posters, and the most wretched one ever. If that's possible from big marketing campaigns, it's certainly understandable for an indie foreign production to have a bad website. Could this project be true?
If the website is to be believed, we've all been waiting for Showgirls 2. Granted, I always thought it would be funny if they made a Showgirls sequel that turned horror, a la Randy in Scream, »

It's been 14 years since Paul Verhoeven's Showgirls iced up its nipples and strutted on to the cinematic stage, largely to hoots of critical derision. But now someone wants to make a sequel. Over the years, the movie has gone on to become a cult favourite, a so-good-its bad staple of movie parties and TV show jokes. And while sequels have been rumoured before, now one might actually come to fruition. JoBlo has discovered evidence, via German site Extratipp that writer/director Marc Vorlander is indeed developing a new film spun off...

Before everyone calls me out for being wrong, yes, since I've shuffled through Robert Fure's DVD collection I realize that there's already a Showgirls 2 that mostly involves people fornicating and someone named Nikki Rider involved. But let's pretend that neither of us know that so we can start fresh. And speaking of starting fresh, it seems like someone out there thinks it's a fan-damn-tastic idea to give us even more Showgirlsy goodness with a sequel that will pop out of the system like the answer to a question nobody asked. According to JoBlo, the pre-eminent site for all things movie and breast-of-the-day related, writer/director Marc Vorlander (who has the title writer/director because of unclear reasons) sees some serious merit in birthing unto the world Showgirls: A Story of Hope. I realize you're laughing at the title now, but you'll be laughing extra hard when I tell you what the main character's name is »

Actress Gina Gershon is convinced she can't get a date with a man her age - because 40-something guys are too intimidated to chat her up.
Gershon, 47, has written off men of her generation, insisting they weren't raised to appreciate strong, career-minded women.
She tells the New York Post, "I'm available. Single... But eligible guys are hard to find. I know amazing professional women who can't get guys. Only young ones come on to me. In their 20s, they're emotionally available and more polite. Those my own age don't want strong women. The ones in their 40s were raised wrong."
And until the Showgirls star finds a suitable mate, Gershon is relying on her male cat to screen young suitors.
She explains, "My only male right now is Cleo, my cat. We're together 11 years... Listen, I'm so approachable, so not intimidating, but if I have a man over and Cleo doesn't like him - he's out!" »

One of the more surreal moments of my adult life was walking toward the theater the night Showgirls was released and seeing a guy scalping tickets to the movie. I'm sure in geek circles, that stuff has happened when people are on line waiting for days on end, but for Showgirls? It didn't even make money that weekend.
That apparently doesn't matter to filmmaker Marc Vorlander, who according to the German site Extra Tipp (via Jo Blo and a Google translator), is prepping a sequel to the Joe Eszterhas' most Eszterhas-y moment. The title is Showgirls: Story of Hope, which ranks quite high on the unintentional comedy scalre, or on the intentional one, come to think of it. »

Apparently there’s a sequel to Showgirls in the works and the man behind the next round of gyrating breastisis is writer/director Marc Vorlander.
Entitled Showgirls: Story of Hope <snicker>, the story will revolve around model/actress Rena Riffel (Trasharella, small role in Showgirls, I think she’s the one doing the “lesbian dance” with Berkley) whose brother dies from a bad dose of cocaine. The stripper goes to Frankfurt to exact revenge on those dealers responsible. <snicker>
The film currently has a $25 million budget with two unnamed big shot Hollywood producers already on board.
The original Showgirls from hornball Paul Verhoeven was released in 1995 and make a lackluster $20 million. (It cost them $45 million to make it.) The film is easily the most popular Nc-17 release ever, ever. Partly because people (not me, I’m classy) wanted to see Jesse Spano (Elizabeth Berkley) work the pole. It also starred Gina Gershon. »

An update to 1995 film Showgirls is being developed, it has been reported. German writer/director Marc Vorlander is at work on the follow-up, JoBlo.com reports. Showgirls: Story Of Hope is to feature Rena Riffell's character travelling to Frankfurt to locate and seek (more) »
