  • Crew or equipment visible: Before Beverley comes out of the pool, a crewmember and a boom mic are reflected in the glass door that Big Tom closes.

  • Continuity: When Tommy bends the car door back into position at the gas station, it is visibly dented and crumpled along the edge. Immediately after, Richard goes to open the door, it falls to the ground, and is in pristine condition.

  • Continuity: The tag on Tommy's life jacket appears and disappears between shots in the airplane.

  • Factual errors: No Cadillac has moving seatbelts similar to those indicated.

  • Continuity: In the airplane restroom, the door was not opposite the toilet, yet when Tommy pulls his tie out of the commode and falls backward, he goes through the door and into the aisle.

  • Continuity: While in Zalinsky's Board Room with the TV crew, Tommy gets Zalinsky to give his "I make car parts" line. As Zalinsky starts, he opens his shirt and undoes his tie, next shot his tie and shirt button are closed, then the next shot they are open again.

  • Factual errors: At the wedding reception, we view some of the scene through Richard's camcorder. However, most of the cuts between shots could only have been made with multiple cameras.

  • Continuity: Tommy reaches for the life preserver with his left hand. In the next shot, he is grabbing it with his right hand.

  • Continuity: As Tommy is preparing to pitch brake pads, it's revealed that he has a clip-on tie. Once inside the building, it's clearly a tie-on type.

  • Revealing mistakes: At the beginning of the airplane bathroom scene, Richard's double can be clearly seen entering the bathroom - the double's hair is much more gray than Richard's. Then, visible through the crack in the door, the double can be seen to go left as Richard comes back of the bathroom.

  • Continuity: The toy hand that Tommy uses to flick off Richard moves between takes.

  • Factual errors: When Ray starts the hanging engine, the fan blows Richard's toupee off of his head. The fan on a car engine sucks air toward it rather than blow air away from it as indicated.

  • Continuity: In the last scene, Tommy's boat is in shallow water. Yet when the wind picks up, his boat is farther out in the lake.

  • Continuity: While waiting to depart, we see a shot of Tommy and Richard's plane waiting at the gate, and it's clearly a two-deck 747. Later, there is an exterior shot of the plane in flight and it's another type of plane, with only a single deck.

  • Continuity: When Richard is telling Tommy about his 1967 Plymouth GTX he says "I dropped in a 440 Magnum with a six-pack" (3x2v carburetors). But when the hood comes open it has a 440 Magnum with 1x4v carburetor - the original engine on this vehicle.

  • Continuity: When Tommy, his father, and the executives are in the brake pad division and Tommy is doing "Kung-Fu" with the moving hooks, his father catches him and tells him to come on. As soon as Tommy takes a step toward his father, the hooks stop moving, but clearly no one turned them off.

  • Revealing mistakes: When Tommy runs into the glass door after a successful sale, he leaves his makeup imprint on the glass.

  • Errors in geography: When Tommy and Richard come back from the airport, as they pass through town you can clearly see a Toronto Dominion sign (Green with big white TD written on it) on the corner of the street, just as they turn right.

  • Factual errors: Throughout the movie it is implied that Sandusky relies only on various factories for its economy. However, Sandusky is home to Cedar Point, one of the most popular amusement parks in the world, which brings in lots of tourism to the area.

  • Continuity: When Tommy is with his friends after finding out his grade, the smoking device in his friend's hand disappears and reappears between shots.

  • Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): Tommy mentions that he and Michelle's brother used to steal doughnuts from Safeway - however, Safeway does not have any stores in Sandusky, Ohio.

  • Continuity: When Richard's hair blows at Zalinsky's headquarters, he pushes his toupee back onto his head, and it's all ruffled and out of place. In the next shot it is back to normal.

  • Continuity: During the last scene on Tommy's boat, there is no rope connected to the pulley wheel at the end of the boom of his sailboat. In the next shot when he sails away, there is a rope attached to it (this is necessary to be able to sail).

  • Revealing mistakes: There is an obvious stunt double for Paul when he is on the hood of the crash test car.

  • Continuity: When Tommy and Richard are listening to the Carpenters on the radio and the hood of the car comes loose and flies up, the music stops even though neither Tommy nor Richard turned off the radio.

  • Continuity: When Richard hits Tommy with the 2x4 the break in the wood has a slivered edge. However, when the scene cuts to a different angle, Richard has a complete 2x4 in his hand.

  • Crew or equipment visible: When Paul arrives in Sandusky on a bus, a camera man and camera can be seen in the upper left-hand corner of the front window as the bus comes to a stop.

  • Crew or equipment visible: When Tommy get out of the car to "tinkle," Richard slowly drives forward and a blue van passes by. You can see the camera in the reflection of the van.

  • Continuity: During many early scenes, Richard's car has no rear-view mirror. However, it is installed before the deer destroys the car and knocks it off with its antlers.

  • Audio/visual unsynchronized: When Richard is looking at the girl in the pool though his hotel window you can hear a zipper noise (as if his pants zipper was going down), but later in the scene you can see he is wearing boxers.

  • Factual errors: In the beginning of the movie, Tommy rushes to take his American History Final. The first question is "Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and __________ Hancock were Framers of the Constitution." Tommy puts Herbie instead of "John." However, while Madison was at the Constitutional Convention, Hancock and Jefferson were not. In fact, Jefferson was in France as our Ambassador to that nation.

  • Continuity: The position of Tommy's boxers directly after he falls out of the airplane bathroom moves between the first and second shot of him on the floor.

  • Continuity: In the scene where Tommy wrecks and lights the toy car model on fire, the front axle and wheels are missing from the table in some shots, and the blue car is set on the table in different spots in some shots as well.

  • Factual errors: When Tommy and Richard are trying to board a flight from Sandusky, OH to Chicago, the plane at the gate is an Air Transat L-1011. Air Transat is a Canadian charter operator and would not operate flights between those two cities.

  • Continuity: The plane Tommy and Richard fly on to Chicago is depicted as a 747 (at the gate in Sandusky) and an L-1011 (mid-air shot as the plane is on final approach) but the interior is that of a Boeing 767.

  • Continuity: Richard hits Tommy in the face with a 2x4 when they get into a fight. This board was nowhere in sight in the long shot of them getting out of the car, and not enough time passes between shots for Richard to have run off, found it, and returned.

  • Factual errors: Just as a group of suits are about to enter the work floor of the factory, Tommy's father insists everyone wear a hard hat. Yet on the floor, several employees are not wearing them, violating virtually every safety code imaginable.

  • Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): At the end of the movie, when Rittenhauer is introducing Tommy to the employees as the new President of Callahan Auto, he introduces him as "Tom Callahan Jr." Earlier in the movie we are shown Tommy's office and on the door reads, "Thomas R. Callahan III"

  • Continuity: When Tommy Boy bends Richards car door in reverse at the Citgo gas station, it is obvious that the door was bent after tommy fixes it, but when Richard tries to open it it looks to be like new.

  • Factual errors: When Tommy is changing clothes in the airplane lavatory the end of his tie gets in the toilet, then he hits the flush button and the toilet sucks his tie down with such a force that it pulls his face down to the bowl. In actuality this blue water recirculation type toilet has a metal flapper in the bottom of the bowl and is designed as a simple gravity drain with no suction at all.

  • Continuity: In the airplane lavatory the bottom half of Tommy's tie gets in the blue chemical liquid of the toilet, which is permanent. In the following scene in downtown Chicago the tie is like new with no hint of blue chemical stain.

  • Audio/visual unsynchronized: When Tommy and Richard stop to pick up the hitchhiker you hear a car horn that trails off as if someone was beeping as they passed by, but there is no car.

  • Continuity: When the mother-in-law is laying on the bed talking to the "step brother", they are talking about how to stop the trucks and her night gown strap changes positions a lot.

  • Continuity: During the scene after Tommy and Richard are kicked out of Zalinsky Auto right before Tommy's love interest shows up, you can see the same reddish haired man in a suit walk by behind Tommy twice.

  • Errors in geography: At the airport, Tommy's love interest is trying to fly to Cuyahoga Falls, but there's no airport in Cuyahoga Falls.

  • Errors in geography: The deer they hit is a red deer native to Eurasia.

  • Errors in geography: When Tommy and Richard pose as flight attendants Richard says if they hit anything it will be a mountain. There are no mountains between Sandusky and Chicago.

  • Errors in geography: When Tommy and Richard are flying from Sandusky to Chicago, Richard asks the chances of hitting a lake. In order to fly from Sandusky to Chicago, you need to go over Lake Michigan, which is the biggest freshwater lake in the US.
