Peter Segal To Direct Sci-Fi Comedy Neighborhood Watch

Peter Segal is a perfect example of failing upwards in Hollywood. The man started his feature film career by directing the third Naked Gun movie, which basically killed the franchise. Then he directed Tommy Boy, which, I admit, is fantastic, but has since directed three Adam Sandler movies (not the good ones) and the Nutty Professor sequel. In spite of his ability, or lack thereof, people do go see his movies, with none since 2000 making less than $120 million at the box office. So naturally, the man continues to have projects thrown his way.
The newest one is Neighborhood Watch, a sci-fi comedy from 20th Century Fox, according to Variety. Originally a vehicle for Will Ferrell and Wedding Crashers director David Dobkin, the film centers on a man who moves to a small town and joins the neighborhood watch committee, only to discover that the town is experiencing bizarre paranormal activity.

Commercial spoofs take shots at DirecTV's Chris Farley spot

Controversy raged last weekend as fans and media types reacted to a new DirecTV ad using the late Chris Farley in scenes from Tommy Boy. Now, some aggressive YouTubers are taking their shot at offending some people (with DirecTV execs at the top of the list).
The original ad featured a live action David Spade discussing DirecTV against Farley's antics from Tommy Boy. While Spade insisted Farley wouldn't mind, a lot of his fans took offense to using a dead man to hawk a product.
But the video below, from a YouTube page, The Landline, lights up the satellite TV provider with an edgy send-up of the "dead talk cash" stunt with faked DirecTV ads featuring a pseudo Heath Ledger, John F. Kennedy, and someone else you'll recognize.
There's a conspiracy theory floating around that this is actually clever viral marketing from DirecTV itself -- since no publicity is bad publicity.

David Spade says he has no regrets about resurrecting a classic scene from "Tommy Boy" -- featuring the late, great Chris Farley -- for a controversial DirecTV ad, telling TMZ that offending people was never his intention. We got David outside Boa last night, where he told us Farley's family and the director of "Tommy Boy" all gave their seal of approval for the spot. He wasn't lying -- Kevin Farley, Chris' bro, was there

Wait, Now Heath Ledger Has a DirecTV Commercial?

If you've been watching playoff baseball these past few weeks, you've probably come across the Tommy Boy DirecTV commercial about, say, 176,000 times. About a week after it began airing, the satellite television company came under fire for a second time for airing parody commercials featuring actors or actresses who died tragically at a young age. The first was a commercial featuring Poltergeist actress Heather O'Rourke, and now folks are really pissed DirecTV is using Chris Farley in a commercial that stars David Spade (who reprises his character from Tommy Boy in a parody of the "Fat Guy in a Little Coat" scene).
If you want my personal opinion, I think DirecTV does this sort of stuff on purpose -- claiming to be "celebrating" the life of a dead celebrity, though what they're really hoping for is that people like us (and several other sites) will give them a bunch of

Heath Ledger’s DirecTV Commercial

Last week the online world threw a big fuss over DirecTV's newest television advertisement, which features David Spade pimping the satellite service in an altered scene from Tommy Boy, which of course includes his dead friend, comedian Chris Farley. And you may remember, this isn't the first time DirecTV has been accused of profiting off of the dead, as they came under fire last year for the same thing, with a similar ad altering Poltergeist, featuring Heather O'Rourke, an actress who died tragically in 1988 at age 12.
When is this disgusting trend going to end? LandlineTV have created a faux DirecTV commercial showing where these tasteless advertising stunts might lead if we don't put a stop to it now -- that's right... Heath Ledger plugs DirecTV in a digitally altered scene from The Dark Knight. And it doesn't end there... Landline has also produced a couple more DirecTV commercials featuring John

Robert Rodriquez Moves On From The Jetsons

Robert Rodriquez has apparently found other shiny little movie trinkets to capture his eye and has left the remake of the 60’s Sci-Fi cartoon “The Jetsons” to other interested parties. And it seems that the interested party is Peter Segal, the director of “Get Smart” and “Tommy Boy”.
According to Pajiba, Peter is circling, circling. “The Jetsons” would make a pretty good movie. No word on a finished script that I’ve seen. We’ll keep you in the loop.

Peter Segal Replaces Rodriguez on 'The Jetsons'?

This movie should've happened fifteen years ago, and it should've starred Tim Allen. It didn't, so here we are in 2009 talking about whether or not a live-action movie based on Hanna-Barbera's animated "futuristic" sitcom The Jetsons will ever see the light of day.
Pajiba says yes, and they say that Peter Segal (Get Smart, Tommy Boy) is the director currently circling the long-dormant project. Director Robert Rodriguez (Shorts) was once enthusiastic about taking a crack at the material, but Warner Brothers wants to move on the project soon and Rodriguez keeps a full plate. Unlike Pajiba, though, I don't see this potential shift in directors as a huge step down.

Peter Segal Eyes ‘Dirty Old Men,’ Possibly ‘The Jetsons’

Director Peter Segal (Tommy Boy, Get Smart) is making news today from a few different places. Apparently, his directorial slate -- which still includes the long-gestating superhero flick Shazam! -- could be getting very busy in the near future.
Up first is a story from THR, who reports that Segal is eying the Warner Bros. comedy known currently as Dirty Old Men (working title). It revolves around an an aging playboy who finally meets the love of his life and his best friend and wingman for the past 40 years who does everything to break up the new couple. Morgan Freeman has already signed onto the project to play the trusty wingman and exec produce, and he's said to be thinking of re-teaming with The Bucket List co-star Jack Nicholson, or so the studio hopes. The tone is being described as Wedding Crashers meets The 40-Year Old Virgin, even though that doesn't make a whole lot of sense

Hey remember that Jetsons movie Robert Rodriguez was supposed to do? Now that he.s busy with Machete and Predators and the next unwanted Spy Kids abortion, most assumed that left The Jetsons dead in the water. While it.s not exactly on the fast track, that may not be true.
Pajiba says Warners is bringing in someone to replace Rodriguez. They.re hiring Peter Segal. Segal is probably best known as the director of movies like Tommy Boy and Anger Management, which ought to mean they.re planning to play up the comedy angle of The Jetsons universe.
For now though, word is that Warner Bros. is starting over with the project. They.re scrapping the script Robert Rodriguez had planned to use after failing to get anyone, including the likes of Jim Carrey, interested in starring. Once Segal signs on the dotted line the search for new writers

If he had to do it again, David Spade wouldn’t agree to hawking DirecTV alongside a scene with his late friend Chris Farley from “Tommy Boy.”
"I wouldn't want anyone to get a whiff that I'm trying to get something off Chris," he told People magazine.
The 30-second commercial, which played during the world series, has been chided by some critics as being tasteless. In it, Farley does his famous “Fat Boy in a Little Coat” routine from the 1995 movie while Spade, inserted into the scene by technology, promotes the satellite service.

When he agreed to do a DirecTV commercial featuring a scene from Tommy Boy with the late Chris Farley, actor David Spade never dreamed anybody would be offended.
"Slight shock," Spade told People on Wednesday night of the fallout from the ad, which some commentators saw as tasteless. "These commercials are cool. They're well done. They're clever. And that they would include Tommy Boy in that company, I thought was very flattering."
The 30-second spot, airing during the World Series, appears to have been taken directly from the 1995 movie, except that while Farley does his famous "Fat Boy in a Little Coat" routine,

Farley Fans Upset By TV Ad

Fans of late funnyman Chris Farley are outraged by a new satellite TV ad, which features scenes from the larger-than-life comedian's Tommy Boy movie.
The comic's co-star and friend David Spade revamps the scenes by speaking direct to the camera and plugging DirecTV's service.
Spade says, "I'm here with tons of fun when I could be watching DirecTV," as Farley dances in front of him.
Fans of the heavyweight star, who died from a drug overdose in 1997, are refusing to see the funny side, calling the commercial "distasteful" and "stupid".
Spade has responded in a statement, which reads, "When DirecTV came to me and the Farley family with this idea... we talked and thought it would be a cool way to remind people just how funny Chris was.
"It is a clever homage to a friend and a movie that we loved doing."
A spokesman for DirecTV adds, "We should look to Chris' family and friends for the ultimate opinion on this subject."

It seems the new DirecTV commercial featuring Chris Farley has generated anger in spades. Or more specifically, at David Spade.
The company's latest spot, in which they—once again—splice together actual movie footage with one of the film's stars talking to the camera about the benefits of the satellite service, involves a scene from Farley and Spade's Tommy Boy.
While Farley's famous "fat-guy-in-a-little-coat" routine is certainly funny, many feel the use of it here is no laughing matter.
Sure, we've seen dead people pop up in commercials before, but there are some who have taken issue with the fact that Spade himself is

First it was James Dean selling long term investments, now it's Chris Farley selling satellite dishes? But while that first one was actually a pretty poignant look into the too-soon-dead actor's potential life, this Tommy Boy commercial from DirecTV is just plain tasteless and both they and David Spade deserve the loads of scorn being hefted at them for this.
The same goes for whoever owns Farley’s likeness rights now, presumably his family. I can’t imagine they thought,

Well it.s taken a decade but I think it.s safe to say that David Spade is very over the death of his good friend Chris Farley. He.s so over it in fact, that he willingly participated in the following piece of advertising gone too far.
The video below is an ad for DirectTV. Maybe you.ve seen some of their other ads in which they yank scenes from popular movies and use them to advertise their product. Shatner did one, in which he.s digitally re-inserted onto the bridge of the Enterprise to yammer on about how awesome DirectTV is. Well now they.ve done it with Chris Farley.s most iconic moment in Tommy Boy. Remember the Fat Guy in a Little Coat bit? Remember how great that was? What are the ethical boundaries when it comes to a celebrity or movie star after the person in question is dead? Obviously, Sony has no problem releasing an unfinished concert film for the recently departed king of pop Michael Jackson. And judging from the projected box office tracking, people are interested in paying for the chance to see Jackson dance and sing on the big screen, for one last time. But what about commercials? There is certainly a difference between releasing an unfinished performance of a dead star and altering a dead actor's performance for use in a television commercial.
FilmJunk points us towards this new DirecTV advertisement which features the late comedian Chris Farley's performance from Tommy Boy, with David Spade's performance digitally altered to promote satellite television. Some might recall that DirecTV went under fire last year for a similar ad altering Poltergeist, featuring Heather O'Rourke,

Remember that recent DirectTV ad where John Belushi reenacts the potato-spitting scene from Animal House with a mouthful of hard drugs Chris Farley sings "Fat Guy in a Little Coat" for the benefit of David Spade's checking account? The new DirecTV commercial, in which David Spade watches Chris Farley's "Fat Guy in a Little Coat" scene from Tommy Boy while appearing to exist in the same room as Farley, is freaking me out. I loved that movie, but can't decide if this a sweet homage to a sexy moment or semi-disrespectful exploitation of the dead. Anyone remember last October's Poltergeist-spoofing ad featuring child star Heather O'Rourke, who passed away in 1988? You stay classy, DirecTV!
