The Notable Films of 2010: Part Four

7 hours ago | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Georgia

Opens: 2010

Cast: Val Kilmer, Andy Garcia, Rupert Friend, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Johnathon Schaech

Director: Renny Harlin

Summary: An American journalist, his cameraman, and a Georgian native get caught in the crossfire of the five-day Russia-Georgia conflict in August 2008, and then have to deal with their obligation to be impartial.

Analysis: A timely parable on war, or Hollywood propaganda filmmaking at its worst? Wherever it goes, especially in Europe and the former Soviet states, "Georgia" will cause a lot of talk and controversy as the incidents depicted are still so fresh in many's minds. Like all topics of the sort, it'll also have its strong supporters and detractors having opinions on the film long before a frame of footage is screened anywhere.

Shot on-location in Tbilisi, the project also marks a potential return to form for Finnish director Renny Harlin. Given the right material the skilled action director delivered three …

‘Toy Story 3′ to Open in Imax 3D

14 hours ago | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

I’ve made the statement before that I think the whole 3D bit is starting to be overdone. However, I have to say that, if any movie would fit 3D well, it’d be Toy Story. Well, when Toy Story 3 opens in June, it won’t just be in regular theaters– it’ll also be opening in Imax 3D.

According to Imax CEO Richard L. Gelfond, “We have always envisioned the ‘Toy Story’ franchise as an ideal fit for The Imax Experience and we’re very happy to finally turn that vision into a reality.”

Toy Story 3 isn’t the only Imax treat moviegoers in 2010 will be able to enjoy.

Just last week, Summit Entertainment announce that Eclipse, the third film in the Twilight series, will open in Imax. Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, Warner Bros’ Inception, and Dreamworks Animation/Paramount’s How to Train Your Dragon …

‘Toy Story 3′ Headed to Theaters on June 18

19 December 2009 6:57 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

A film as incredible as the original Toy Story was lucky enough to be followed up with a sequel that fired on all cylinders and stood up to Pixar’s original work. I would have never expected a Toy Story 3, but I’m glad one is headed our way, and relatively soon: the film will be released on June 18, 2010.

The whole cast of the original film is returning to Imax 3D theaters, directed by Lee Unkrich and written by Little Miss Sunshine scribe Michael Arndt. On June 30, the third film in the Twilight saga will be released in Imax, and I’m counting on all of you to make sure that Toy Story 3 dominates it in box office totals.

I suppose this isn’t much in the way of news, only a brief reflection on how lucky we are as audiences: Pixar, a company of wonderful storytellers, has …

It isn't totally unexpected that Disney and Pixar might push to get Toy Story 3 in IMAX theaters next summer, and now that deal is done. CNN recived news that IMAX and Disney will partner up next summer to put the long-awaited threequel on the enormo screen on June 18th, the same date it opens in standard format theaters.

Speaking of that 2010 lineup, IMAX now has Alice in Wonderland, How to Train Your Dragon, Shrek Forever After, Twilight: Eclipse, Inception, and Tron: Legacy in addition to Toy Story. All the animated flicks are in 3-D, …

Disney is Bringing Pixar's Toy Story 3 to IMAX Next Summer

18 December 2009 1:24 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Disney has announced today that they will be releasing Pixar's Toy Story 3 in IMAX 3D on June 18th, 2010 next summer. This will be the fourth Disney IMAX 3D release and the first Pixar movie to ever be released in IMAX (oooh, ahhh). The only bad news is that Toy Story 3 will be digitally re-mastered into the unparalleled image and sound quality of "The IMAX Experience" with proprietary IMAX Dmr technology. I'm not really a fan of the Dmr technology, I think it sometimes makes the picture quality look worse than if you were to just see it on 35mm. But I'm sure Toy Story 3 will still look great up on the giant IMAX screen. "We have always envisioned the Toy Story franchise as an ideal fit for The IMAX Experience and we're very happy to finally turn that vision into a reality,” said IMAX CEO Richard L. …

Toy Story 3 Coming In IMAX

18 December 2009 8:50 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

We already knew that the third Toy Story film would be coming at us in 3D, like most of Pixar's output at this point. But today Disney has announced that it'll be even bigger than that-- Toy Story 3 will debut in IMAX as well. Toy Story 3 director Lee Unkrich linked from his Twitter page to a press release about the decision. The IMAX choice seems perfectly logical, given that animated movies like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and A Christmas Carol have gone the IMAX route and likely made more money for it. I'm not certain exactly how crucial it will be to see Toy Story 3 in IMAX, but I'm sure there are plenty of Pixar diehards ready to shell out their money just in case. …

Film: Review:a Town Called Panic

17 December 2009 9:56 AM, PST | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Between 2000 to 2003, Belgian animators Stéphane Aubier and Vincent Patar produced a series of stop-motion shorts about the wacky misadventures of a community of plastic children’s toys. Not quite Toy Story or Gumby, and not quite Robot Chicken or Team America, Aubier and Patar’s A Town Called Panic has the most in common with the old Nickelodeon series Action League Now!!, in that it’s a little too rough-and-tumble for young kids, but it isn’t exactly subversive or smart-ass, either. A Town Called Panic is more like what a preteen with an overactive imagination might …

Mark Strong on John Carter Of Mars, Kick-ass, and Ridley’s Scott’s Robin Hood

16 December 2009 10:34 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Earlier today, I got to speak on the phone with the great actor Mark Strong (IMDb resume), who plays the villainous Lord Blackwood in Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes.  Due to our conversation covering so much ground on not only Holmes, but all of the other projects he’s involved with, I decided to break up the interview into two parts with tonight’s section covering what Strong said on Andrew Stanton’s John Carter of Mars, Matthew Vaughn’s Kick-Ass, and Ridley’s Scott’s Robin Hood.

Trust me when I say, if you are interested in any of the three films I just mentioned, you will want to read what Strong said after the jump:

For fans of John Carter, Strong says he plays Matai Shang and “over the course of the 3 movies that they’re envisioning making, and I’ve seen the synopsis of the 2nd and 3rd, …

Roy E. Disney passes away

16 December 2009 10:23 PM, PST | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

Roy E. Disney, the nephew of Walt Disney, died today at the age of 79. He was battling stomach cancer and passed away in Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach, CA.

Born in 1930, when Roy was just a boy he would play in the hallways of his uncle's studio, sometimes right outside the offices where animators were busy working on the next animated movie. Often his Uncle Walt would invite the playing child in to see what people were working on and ask for the advice of him to see if a sequence being produced was amusing enough or captured the right essence for a child to enjoy it.

When Roy grew up he entered the entertainment business like his uncle, at first working outside the Walt Disney company before moving into an executive position in 1953. He remained at the company where a reputation soon built that the nephew of …
