Brad Pitt may explore the Bermuda Triangle with 'Dark Void'

19 November 2009 12:49 PM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Brad Pitt has rarely dipped his toe into the world of Science-Fiction.  Sure, he appeared in Terry Gilliam's "Twelve Monkeys," but that's about it.  Instead he's had fun in period epics like "Troy" or the occasional drama with fantastical elements like "Meet Joe Black" and "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button."  Now, Pitt may be teasing his fans by developing a big screen version of the upcoming Capcom video game "Dark Void."  Will he actually star in it? According to Variety, the video game centers on a pilot on a routine mission who crash lands in the Bermuda Triangle.  When... »

HBO’s ‘The Pacific’ Trailer

18 November 2009 11:43 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

HBO is bringing us The Pacific, a WWII story of what went down in the Pacific while the men from Band of Brothers were fighting in Europe.

The series is based on the memoirs of Eugene Sledge and Robert Leckie, both of whom were Marines that served in the Pacific Theater of Operations.  It was produced by (you guessed it) Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks (both of whom produced BoB) and Gary Goetzman (producer of Charlie Wilson’s War).

Joseph Mazzello and James Badge Dale have tackled the roles of Sledge and Leckie, respectively.  John Seda rounds out the lead parts playing Sergeant John Basilone.  Mazzello played the little boy in Jurassic Park (!) all those years ago, Dale popped up in The Departed and The Black Donnellys and Seda’s a former boxer who appeared in Twelve Monkeys and more recently, Bad Boys II.

Here’s the trailer for The Pacific. »

'2012' Is Old News: Hollywood Apocalypses Through The Decades

13 November 2009 1:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Today, Roland Emmerich's latest world-ending epic, "2012," hits theaters. John Cusack, Amanda Peet and their pals race around the world, beholding one scene of devastation after another as an eco-catastrophe tears the planet apart. The story's premise is built on the belief that the apocalypse will come in the year 2012, as foretold by the Mayan calendar.

Unfortunately for Mr. Emmerich, Hollywood has already trashed the lovely planet Earth roughly a bazillion times over. From viral outbreaks to zombie uprisings, global warming to alien incursions... the people of this world have seen, suffered through and been almost completely annihilated by any threat you can imagine. Looking back through Hollywood history, the world was wiped out countless times, and long before the year 2012.

The '60s

For any movies where the time of the apocalypse isn't specified, it's a safe bet that the action occurs in the "present day" in which the movie was made. »

Their Best Role: Brad Pitt and 'Fight Club'

12 November 2009 9:02 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Welcome to a new series here on Cinematical where we select an actor or actress and the role we think is their all time best.

Brad Pitt has taken on a myriad of roles over the years. He's fly fished, hunted down sadistic killers, played a romantic devil, dallied in thievery, suffered through pain in his Achilles, and even showed up as the notorious Jesse James. And while he may have earned Oscar nominations for his turn as a mental patient in 12 Monkeys and a backward-aging man in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, his best role lives in cult fandom as the corporation-loathing anarchist Tyler Durden in Fight Club.

I know. It's strange of me to pick this role out of the list -- especially in light of his time in 12 Monkeys. Fight Club was the film Edward Norton got recognized for -- not so much Brad Pitt. But »

Turning the World Upside Down - Script review of Juan Diego Solanas' mind bending Sci-Fi Romance

26 October 2009 3:07 PM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

[Editor's note: You can see our first piece on this film from back in February, and also watch an incredible short Juan Solanas did.]

Upside Down is a project currently sitting in pre-production, due to be helmed by Argentinean director Juan Diego Solanas and to star Kirsten Dunst and Jim Sturgess.

A quick glance at IMDb and we have an intriguing premise. Set on another world which consists of two huge planets that sit one on top of the other, they are attached by an enormous tower called Transworld, which allows for limited contact between the two races of humans that live on each planet, and watch each other by literally looking ‘up’ to see their neighbours.

The script begins with a narrator explaining the evolution of this bizarre people; from cavemen on each world seeing each other for the first time, to Greek–like philosophers and scientists communicating by drawing equations in fields and, eventually Roman-type emperors forming the technology to trade with the other planet. It soon becomes clear that the ‘Top »

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus Review

19 October 2009 1:11 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Short version: Despite its flaws, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus still offers some jaw-dropping visuals, fine performances and showcases a fantastically creative imagination that make it worth seeing.

Screen Rant’s Ross Miller Reviews The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

There are a handful of directors out there - including Quentin Tarantino, David Lynch and The Coen brothers - whose new films are always considered to be cinematic events. Amongst that list of directors (for me) is Terry Gilliam, who I think is one of the most imaginative and creative filmmakers out there when it comes to the ideas and subsequent visuals that come the wild imagination he possesses.

Even when he’s at his weakest, Gilliam always offers something worth watching in my books, whether it be ambitious sci-fi (Twelve Monkeys) or almost self-indulgent fantasy (Tideland). So does his latest fantasy-laden film, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus deliver yet again on that Gilliam charm? »

The Persistent Misfortune of Mister Gilliam

15 October 2009 4:01 PM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

This week, finally, sees the release of Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. The titular Parnassus sold his daughter’s soul to the devil, and now she is reaching 16, the devil is due to collect. Parnassus hopes a stranger, Tony, holds the key to saving her.

Gilliam’s productions have a tendency towards misfortune, and The Imaginarium was no exception. The tragic death of Heath Ledger, of course, overshadows trivialities like film production and distribution problems, and i’m sure Gilliam’s thoughts were with the family of his friend, and not his movie. A question mark did, however, hang over the future of the project. Eventually, Heath’s friends stepped in and the show went on.

That wasn’t that though, as Gilliam struggled to obtain a distribution deal, with companies reluctant to gamble on an independent fantasy movie in the current economy. For some film-makers, this »

Gorgeous UK Poster for Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

14 October 2009 6:20 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Another gorgeous new UK poster for Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus has hit the web today. I first saw this poster on SlashFilm and fell in love with it as well (just like everyone is once they see it). I love how all the little Terry Gilliam "trinkets" are popping out of every side, it's a very fitting poster for the film, and the beautiful Lily Cole sitting nude is just... wow. I'm in London this week (where it hits theaters starting next Friday) and I've seen a lot of the blue posters on buses, but none of these. This is some of the best marketing for a Terry Gilliam movie I've ever seen. And don't forget to watch the trailer! The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is directed by beloved filmmaker Terry Gilliam, of the Monty Python movies, Time Bandits, Brazil, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, Twelve Monkeys, »

Q+A: Terry Gilliam for The Imaginarum Of Doctor Parnassus

13 October 2009 9:30 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

In the dark days following the death of Heath Ledger, Terry Gilliam was grieving the loss of a close friend and couldn't bring himself even to contemplate what would happen to the film, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, that they had both been working on when the young Australian actor sadly passed on.

"It was a terrible time," he says. "And frankly I was just devastated by the loss of such a great guy. The film didn't really come into it at that point."

But gradually, encouraged by his collaborators including his daughter, Amy Gilliam, who is a producer on the film, he began to accept that finishing it would be a fitting tribute to Heath even though, at first, he couldn't see how they could do it. Ledger died in January 2008 with the British end of the production completed but with weeks of shooting still planned on sound stages in Canada. »

Terry Gilliam Knows He'll Never Win An Oscar

13 October 2009 7:55 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Terry Gilliam has given up on ever getting an Oscar, and really, that's probably a good thing. The visionary, probably crazy director behind masterpieces like Brazil and Twelve Monkeys and, uh, less-than-masterpieces The Brothers Grimm and (I'll go ahead and say it) The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus has never made movies for anything other than his boundless imagination, while the Academy wants movies made specifically to their tastes and their tastes alone. And Gilliam isn't having any of that! "You would think that there's intelligent life in Hollywood. But then you discover that there's just fear," he said in The Daily Telegraphy. "People are frightened of making decisions or even having - I hate to use the word 'vision', but they lack all of that. Hollywood is run by Goldman Sachs and not by entrepreneurs or studio people." He's completely right, of course, and just saying what everyone is too »

The Flash Still Running Says Screenwriter Dan Mazeau

7 October 2009 11:21 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

If you’re wondering whatever happened to the Scarlet Speedster, tales his film adaptation’s death have been greatly exaggerated.  According to screenwriter Dan Mazeau, “The Flash” is still zipping along. and he should know since he’s the screenwriter currently working on the movie.  Put on your winged helmet and hit the jump for more on what’s happening with Barry Allen/Wally West/your-preferred-Flash-alter-ego.

Yesterday, IGN ran an interview they did with producer Charles Roven, whose credits include “Twelve Monkeys”, “Three Kings”, and “The Dark Knight”, as well as the adaptation of DC Comics popular superhero, The Flash.  He said that development of the film had slowed down due to Warner Bros. wanting to take a different approach to the character; an approach where he would be a part of the larger DC Universe and help pave the way for a Justice League movie.  He noted that he »

Dsma Movie Legend: Terry Gilliam

5 October 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

With classic films such as Brazil, The Fisher King, Twelve Monkeys and Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas to his name, Terry Gilliam is a fitting recipient of the Movie Legend prize at the Digital Spy Movie Awards. The much-loved filmmaker was delighted when we informed him about the honour, joking: "Is the award a heavy one or a light one? I've got a lot of doors that need propping open, that's why!" Digital Spy recently spoke exclusively to Gilliam, taking a look back at his work and incredible career. > Click here to see Terry Gilliam's Movie Legend acceptance video What made you decide to move away from Monty Python, to go from being an animator into feature directing?

In Profile: Bruce Willis

1 October 2009 4:22 AM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Bruce Willis is not a bad actor. He just occasionally acts in bad movies. It’s not entirely his fault either. Shall we put it down to “bold choices” that didn’t work out? If in a charitable mood, sure. There has always been a touch of uncertainty about Willis. He does not appear to be a natural storyteller.

Let’s say acting is an egotistical, ridiculous career option for anybody. Consider it. Even before the lucrative potential is taken into account – pretending to be other people is rather odd. Actors take up a lifetime of lying and fantasying in some vainglorious search for truth (fame and wealth too, if we are being cynical). Is it completely stupid or brave? Actors as pathological liars or sociopaths is a salient thought.

The American studios created the film star and it destroys them. Maintaining a lifelong and popular career in such a fickle, »

Director Jonathan Mostow Talks Surrogates

23 September 2009 8:30 AM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Surrogates, director Jonathan Mostow’s blockbuster adaptation of the acclaimed graphic novel by Robert Venditti and Brett Weldes, is a sci-fi action-thriller starring Bruce Willis and set in a alternate version of present day Boston. It’s a version of contemporary Bean Town that looks quite familiar – no space-age megadomes or flying cars – apart from the suspiciously flawless appearance of its citizenry. They all look like movie stars; not a blemish or a hair out of place, let alone an actual physical deformity. It’s as if the Stepford Wives had colonized the city with their picture perfect offspring – which, in fact, is not so very far from the case.

In the world of Surrogates, people lock themselves away in the safety of their homes while their lives are lived by idealized, android versions of themselves. It’s an arrangement that, though it purports to eliminate crime and any number of other social ills, »

Terry Gilliam wants to make a Pixar movie

25 August 2009 12:24 PM, PDT | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

Pixar has a well-deserved standing as a studio that produces quality adventure and quality family-oriented movies but to film fans that follow the inner workings of the company, Pixar's reputation is probably raised a little higher. Before he came on to direct The Incredibles, geeks savvy to Brad Bird's reputation praised Pixar for giving the writer an opportunity to fly with their approach to constructing the story for a movie. The company has also earned additional brownie points for not going after easy wins and producing fast-tracked sequels to their hits.

So to many of us familiar with the hyper-kinetic world view of director Terry Gilliam, the idea of the man that brought us Time Bandits, The Fisher King, Brazil, Twelve Monkeys and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus riding his horse to Pixar's ranch sounds like a dream come true.
