Bryan Singer to return to 'X-Men': Will the mutants rise to greatness once again?

1 hour ago | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

And now for some news that will make you drop your coffee mug to the floor in slow motion: Bryan Singer is returning to X-Men!  According to the Hollywood Reporter, Fox has confirmed that the The Usual Suspects director will be back to take on the next installment in the blockbuster series. This is a smart move. The first two X-Men movies, helmed by Singer, adhered to the golden rule of superhero franchises, namely that the second film will be better than the first. Cleverly, Singer hoped to avoid the other golden rule, that the third film will suck eggs, …

Dinner for Schmucks

Opens: July 23rd 2010

Cast: Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Zach Galifianakis, Bruce Greenwood, David Walliams

Director: Jay Roach

Summary: A renowned publisher encourages his friends to invite the most pathetic guests possible for their weekly dinner party. Just as they find the most pathetic man yet, the host is injured and ends up trapped with the man all night long.

Analysis: A remake of director Francis Veber's 1998 César award-winning "Le Diner des cons", 'Schmucks' is one of the highest profile comedies of next year with one of the strongest casts for the genre in recent memory. It also marks the return of "Austin Powers" and "Meet the Parents" helmer Jay Roach who has produced several films in recent years but hasn't directed since 2004's "Meet the Fockers".

The question now lies not in the performers or director but the material itself and whether a Gallic comedy can …

Kevin Spacey Wants 'Superman Returns' Sequel

23 November 2009 9:10 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Kevin Spacey wants another crack at killing the Man of Steel.

Now if only Warner Brothers would bite. Recently, the star of The Usual Suspects and American Beauty stated that if he had his way, he’d be reprising the role of Lex Luthor for a Superman Returns follow-up.

"If I ran Warner Brothers I could tell you definitively we’d be making that movie," Spacey said. "But I don’t, and they haven’t called me to tell me."

The 2006 superhero adaptation was heavily-hyped, but not a big money-maker. For a while, Ninja Assassin director James McTeigue had expressed an interest in replacing director Bryan Singer, and subsequently rebooting the franchise.

But DC Entertainment President Diane Nelson recently said the company does not have "any current plans for Superman," and McTeigue has moved on, claiming executives are unsure what direction to take the franchise.

Unfortunately for fans of the character, …

Oscars quiz: Who got demoted?

21 November 2009 11:37 AM, PST | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

It doesn't matter what acting category you campaign for at the Academy Awards; voters can put you wherever they want. Most frequently, when ignoring category guidance, they tended to promote contenders from the supporting race to lead like Kate Winslet ("The Reader") and Keisha Castle-Hughes ("Whale Rider"), but sometimes they have the nerve to push a lead contender down to supporting. Which one of these actors suffered that humiliating fate? To see the answer, click on the "Continue reading" link under the photos. Answer: James Cromwell was demoted to the 1995 supporting race, where he lost to Kevin Spacey ("The Usual Suspects"). Official Blu-ray and DVD Details for Duncan Jones’ Moon

9 November 2009 7:50 AM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

A few weeks back, director Duncan Jones revealed some of the DVD and Blu-ray release details for the import release of his highly acclaimed film Moon via his twitter account (@ManMadeMoon). And ever since, we've been waiting for official word from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Today, we have that official word in the form of the press release below. The film will hit Blu-ray and DVD here in the states on January 12th, and it will include what appears to be a solid amount of special features. This includes two commentary tracks, two Q&A featurettes and two behind the scenes featurettes. Not bad for a smaller release. I for one will be keeping an eye out for Moon and picking up this release, as this film is certainly on my list for year end awards. See the official press release below: Culver City, Calif. Blu-ray Review: North by Northwest (50th Anniversary Edition)

3 November 2009 3:50 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

There was talk earlier this year that it wasn't in the studios' best interest to continue to release classic films on DVD/Blu-ray as the demand for them was dwindling and the cost of restoration was climbing. The article in question even quotes Warner Home Video senior vice president George Feltenstein saying "most of the studios have pretty much said 'Screw it, we're out of here, we're not going to do this.'" Strangely enough, it just so happens Warner Home Video is the home entertainment studio releasing the very first Alfred Hitchcock film on Blu-ray, 50 years after its theatrical release with a restoration price tag I have read cost upwards of $1 million. Perhaps studios are slowing down the release of their classic films, but with Warner's recent Blu-ray release of The Wizard of Oz, the upcoming release of Gone With the Wind and this release of North by Northwest

Watch This: Kevin Spacey's Uncanny Knack for Impersonations

29 October 2009 2:45 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Kevin Spacey is a talented actor, there's no denying that, but who knew that the man of a million characters was also a man of a million impersonations? Oh, you did? Well, you must have already seen Spacey's appearance on James Lipton's "Inside the Actor's Studio" from back in July of 2000. Or maybe you saw him in his great "Saturday Night Live" skit in which he does Christopher Walken auditioning for the role of Han Solo in Star Wars.

Okay, so maybe it's no big secret that the man who blindsided moviegoers in The Usual Suspects has a special talent for camouflaging himself in the skin of his acting peers, but it's new to me, and that means it's bound to be new to someone else. Below is a clip from Spacey's aforementioned trip to the "Actor's Studio" in which he goes along with a silly game of Lipton's. …

Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck to Direct Angelina Jolie in “The Tourist”

While it was rumored last week, IGN has now confirmed that Angelina Jolie will be replacing Charlize Theron and Variety now says that Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck is tipped to direct Spyglass thriller “The Tourist” which is set to start production in February 2010.

The Tourist” will be the first movie for von Donnersmarck since the German director’s 2006 breakout The Lives of Others, which won the Academy Award for foreign-language film.

A remake of 2005 French thriller “Anthony Zimmer“, the story follows an American tourist (Sam Worthington) finds his life in danger when a female Interpol agent (Angelina Jolie) uses him as a dupe to flush out an elusive criminal with whom she once had an affair.

Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects, Valkyrie, X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2) wrote the screenplay.

The Tourist” is scheduled for release in 2011.

New Director Being Eyed For ‘The Tourist’

19 October 2009 11:46 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Last week we reported on the possibility of Angelina Jolie replacing Charlize Theron in the upcoming thriller, The Tourist. Along with that news, we also learned that the previously attached director, Bharat Nalluri, had stepped away from the project, leaving the producers actively seeking a new director. And today we get the news that a new director has been found in the form of German helmer Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (The Lives of Others).

Variety reports that although Donnersmarck has yet to officially enter into negotiations for The Tourist with Spyglass Entertainment, the talks are expected to happen very soon. Jolie was contacted by the studio a couple of weeks ago about starring in the project in place of Theron, but her involvement was said to be contingent on finding the right director. After meeting with a number of different directors, von Donnersmarck seems to have emerged as the right man for the job, …

X-Men franchise: Producer talks Magneto, Wolverine 2, Deadpool, First Class

16 October 2009 5:13 PM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

In an interview in Los Angeles to promote the release of Wolverine on DVD and Blu-ray, producer Lauren Shuler Donner has shed further light on upcoming films in the X-Men franchise.

Although the interview doesn't give us any more detail on the X-Men 4 and New Mutants projects that Donner had previously mentioned, it does talk about Wolverine 2, X-Men Origins: Magneto, X-Men: First Class and Deadpool.

It appears that Magneto is at the back of the queue and may not end up being made, while Wolverine 2 is at the most advanced stage of development and is likely to be filmed in Japan to give an authentic flavour to its story, which will be based on the comic book tales set in the Far East.

Meanwhile, First Class - about the early years of Xavier's School - is envisaged as a potential franchise along the lines of the Harry Potter series. But …

Lauren Shuler Donner Talks Wolverine Sequel

16 October 2009 11:41 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Empire recently got to speak with X-Men Origins: Wolverine producer Lauren Shuler Donner, who revealed some interesting tidbits on a sequel, including the film's writer, Christopher McQuarrie.

"That's the furthest along of all the X-Men projects on the boil. It's actually the story we wanted to use for the first Wolverine film, but [Fox head honcho] Tom Rothman preferred to set the character up with an origin story first. This movie will really focus on the relationship between Wolverine and Mariko, the daughter of a Japanese crime lord, and what happens to him in Japan. We're very fortunate to have a story mostly outlined for us [from the comic book arc co-written by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller]. And we wanted an A+ writer, so we want to Chris McQuarrie (Valkyrie, The Usual Suspects). He came in and has tightened the story and got really immersed in the whole thing - he's in Japan in his head!

We want to make it authentic so I …

Review: Did you ever see… The Negotiator?

15 October 2009 12:19 PM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

This week sees the release of Law Abiding Citizen. The story of a man, played by Gerard Butler, who is forced to watch his family murdered. When the District Attorney makes a shady deal with the defendants, Butler takes matters into his own hands.

The director is F. Gary Gray. You may not recognise the name, but he has directed a tense thriller before, again about a man taking justice into his own hands. Starring the then dream partnership of Kevin Spacey and Samuel L. Jackson, let’s take a look at 1998’s The Negotiator.

As so often happens, there were a couple of movies on the same subject released around the same time, namely hostage negotiators. The other in this case was the Eddie Murphy vehicle, 1997’s Metro. Metro wasn’t very good, but ironically turned out to be, barring Bowfinger, his best movie for years to come.

Bryan Singer To Return To X-Men

13 October 2009 2:19 PM, PDT | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

Bryan Singer (”The Usual Suspects,” “X-Men,” “X2,” “Valkyrie“) has admitted that he would like to make more X-Men films.

The Hollywood Reporter talked with Singer, who worked on the first two movies in the series, “X-Men” (2000), “X2″ (2003), about return to the big screen X-Men franchise that he created.

“I’m still looking to possibly return to the X-Men franchise,” he said. “I’ve been talking to Fox about it. I love Hugh Jackman. I love the cast.”

Singer added that he likes working on science fiction films because they teach the audience about mankind.

“[I like to] trick audiences into thinking they’re seeing fireworks, but they’re learning about themselves and listening to what I have to say,” he explained. “The excitement about working in science fiction and fantasy is… the stories, if they are good, are about the human condition.”

Singer Wants Back in the Mansion

Director Bryan Singer is interested in returning to the Marvel Universe, telling a South Korean audience he’s made it clear to 20th Century Fox. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Singer told fans at South Korea's Pusan International Film Festival, "I love Hugh Jackman. I love the cast," he said of X-Men: Origins: Wolverine.

After directing the first two features, he left the franchise to try his hand at rebooting Superman for Warner Bros. The critical and financial drubbing Superman Returns received derailed the Man of Steel’s film trajectory and left Singer a wounded director. He noted that "the risk is too great to leave [the final cut] in the hands of a filmmaker," he said, adding that he "has a responsibility to help studios feel secure in their investments."

During an on-stage discussion with director Kim Ji-woon, Singer noted that directors in this Asian country enjoy tremendous creative freedom compared …

Bryan Singer In Talks To Return To X-Men

Director Bryan Singer has expressed interest in directing a fourth instalment for the X-Men franchise.

According to a story by the Associated Press, Singer said at South Korea's Pusan International Film Festival, "I'm still looking to possibly returning to the X-Men franchise... I've been talking to Fox about it."

Singer helmed the first two films in the X-Men series but decided to pass on the third instalment as he wanted to direct Superman Returns. Instead it was Brett Ratner who took over the helm on X-Men : The Last Stand while South African director Gavin Hood directed the very successful spin-off, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which was released earlier this year.

Singer is a huge fan of science fiction and fantasy movies as they allow him the opportunity to use entertainment as a vehicle to discuss serious issues. On X-men, the director said that a story following a superhuman group of …
