'Brothers' Wrenching, But the Performances Are Top Notch

Sibling rivalry is a common theme in films, but Brothers takes that universal subject and places it in a new context. There's more at play — and at stake — in Jim Sheridan's awards hopeful than just family interaction. Grief, guilt, and identity lie at the torn heart of this sometimes disturbing but always moving film.
At the beginning of Brothers, the family of Captain Sam Cahill (Tobey Maguire, Spider-Man 3) is reluctant to see the Marine return to Afghanistan for another tour of duty. His wife, Grace (Natalie Portman, The Other Boleyn Girl), jokingly asks to come with him, and his daughters (Bailee Madison and Taylor Geare) plead with him to stay. He has an uneasy relationship with his brother, Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal, Zodiac), who has just been released from prison in time for Sam to leave. Trouble-making Tommy has always stood in his brother's shadow, and it's never been

Jean Reno and Natalie Portman in The Professional
Photo: Columbia Pictures
Is Luc Besson an overrated filmmaker? I think he's a fine director but reviewing his resume he's usually a pretty average writer and his movies are kind of hit-or-miss. But every once in while he sneaks in an effort that surprises you, makes you take a step back and think, Whoa, where'd that come from? My most recent such reaction came while watching his last directorial effort, Angel-a, a sweet and moving love story dropped into a hotzone trifecta of mediocrity including The Fifth Element, The Messenger and Arthur and the Invisibles. To that point, outside of Angel-a he hasn't made a substantial contribution to the medium since Leon - The Professional, a contribution certainly worth celebrating, and will be done so over the next ten paragraphs.
I didn't see The Professional in the movie theater. I watched it on VHS.

For years, Amitabh Bachchan and the three Khans -- Shah Rukh, Aamir and Salman -- have been Bollywood`s leading male actors. But a new man now looks set to join them.Ranbir Kapoor has received rave reviews for his latest film, `Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani`, and is tipped by colleagues and critics to follow his grandfather and father to acting super-stardom."Ranbir has all the makings of a superstar," said the film`s director, Rajkumar Santoshi. "He is multi-talented and good-looking, too. He can carry humorous as well as serious roles with quite an ease."But the 27-year-old brushes aside such talk, instead preferring to build up experience in a range of films to prove his worth as an actor and not just a name in a business and country where family connections go a long way."Please don`t give me such titles,

Director: Thospol Siriwiwat, Piraphan Laoyont. Review: Adam Wing.
Sick. Nurses. Do I have your attention yet? We're talking about a Thai horror movie called Sick Nurses here, that’s got to be worth something, right? A film that is insanely exploitative and yet, for reasons I can't explain, completely devoid of anything approaching sex, nudity and over exposed fleshy bits. Beautiful girls, yes. Entire scenes composed of toned bellies, ample cleavage and attractive body shots, certainly. Girls in skimpy nurses outfits, of course. Girls out of skimpy nurses outfits and wearing next to nothing, indeedy. Sex and nudity... not a sniff. Nadda. Uh-uh. That'll be a big no-no then. It's the kind of film where attractive young girls shower fully clothed, really, so get your mind out of the gutter while I explain away the plot.

Variety reports that the Boston Film Festival will award Uma Thurman with a "film excellence" award for her acting career.
Thurman has certainly had an eclectic, up-and-down career. Interestingly enough, she wasn't even on-screen for her debut film role: She lent her voice to the English-language dubbing of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, the 1984 feature from legendary Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki.
Later in the 80s, she also had small roles in The Adventures of Baron Munchausen and Dangerous Liaisons. She was also the title female character in Henry & June, which in 1990 became the first movie to receive an Nc-17 (just after the rating was introduced to replace the X).
But of course, her breakout was as Mia Wallace in Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, for which she received a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination. Since then, she's taken on a variety of interesting, off-beat roles (Kill Bill, Sweet and Lowdown,

Activision, unwilling to skate by the holiday season with just "Guitar Hero 5" and "DJ Hero," is bringing one more rhythm game into your already rock-laden household before the year is out. "Guitar Hero: Van Halen" will be releasing on December 22nd, and features the musical stylings of Eddie, Alex and Wolfgang Van Halen along with the vocal insanity that is David Lee Roth. Sammy Hagar is, predictably, a no-show.
The game will follow the trend of "Gh: Metallica" and "Gh: Aerosmith" by including songs from not only Van Halen, but also other groups with similar musical style, including Weezer, The Foo Fighters and Queen.
Here's the full song list for your viewing pleasure:

Singer aims for more mature sound on sophomore album, Tomorrow.

At what point do we go from Boyz II Men? That is the eternal question being pondered by baby-faced crooner Sean Kingston in his "Fire Burning" video, a clip which aims to take him from "Beautiful Girls" into the great booty-ful beyond.
It's a tougher transition than you'd think. Kingston, 19 (though he looks about 14), struck gold in 2007 with a pair of easy, breezy semi-reggae hits: the the aforementioned "Girls" and "Me Love," both of which could generally be described as "sweet." Now he's back with a new album, Tomorrow, a new swagger and a new, mature sound. But so far, the kids aren't buying it. Growing up, it would seem, really is hard to do.
Earlier this year, Kingston leaked "I'm at War," an overwrought, Auto-Tuned track

Wall Street, they tell me, is on an upturn, and the economy is well on its way to recovery. Hooray and Huzzah! But, even if all this optimism is justified (which I doubt), the rough times aren't entirely behind us and, however long they linger, certain businesses are going to suffer -- especially certain businesses that may not be fit for survival in the digital world, like publishing for the niche markets of Sf and horror.
And, even if happy days are here again, some 20th Century businesses won't be coming back, ever.
Every year, March is National Reading Month, and every year it passes by with no one noticing, except for a few librarians who have to get up on ladders to post the banners (of course, this year, no budget for banners, so there wasn't even that).
Well, this blog is going to change everything; we're going to
