Liff '09: Summer Wars review

25 November 2009 12:09 PM, PST | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

(Screened as part of the 23rd Leeds International Film Festival which ran from 4th-22nd November 2009.)

Virtual worlds as depicted in film and television can be something of a sore point for many people. It doesn't take a geek to realise filmmakers frequently find it hard to resist the temptation to jazz up technology, make it more visual, make it sexier. Films dealing with these subjects that strike a happy medium between realism and artistry are few and far between.

Surprisingly, Mamoru Hosoda's Summer Wars is definitely one of the minority. It's a thoughtfully drawn, almost tangible near-future that lifts from any number of recognisable real-world examples. Surprising because it's also a riotously silly, visually dazzling, hugely enjoyable genre mashup that firmly establishes Hosoda as one of the leading lights in Japan's animation industry.

The film takes place in a world where the majority of the Earth's population now »

Trailer for ‘Universal Soldier: Regeneration’ Hits the Web

24 November 2009 7:00 AM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

In the milieu of “better-than-they-have-a-right-to-be” action movies, I need to add 1992’s Universal Soldier. From the team that later brought us Stargate and Independence Day, Universal Soldier starred Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolpf Lundgren back when those names actually meant something at the box office.

Still, even with a mediocre script and some stilted acting, the movie actually managed to be pretty good and even more importantly, fun. Now, many years later and after at least one sequel already down, the very forgettable Universal Soldier: The Return, we now are going to get a third installment of the franchise, cleverly entitled Universal Soldier: Regeneration. And yes, we’ve got a trailer for you, so don’t worry.

This one goes direct to video this time but does feature returning stars Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren. It also brings Ufc heavyweight champion Andrei “The Pitbull” Arlovski into the mix, which could prove interesting. »

This week, our friends from Movie Reviews By Captain D, Battle Royale With Cheese and Heyuguys give their verdict on Roland Emmerich's disasterific new flick, 2012...

Movie Reviews By Captain D

After the silly but fun Independence Day and bloated climate warning epic wannabe The Day After Tomorrow, Robert Emerich is back trying to destroy the planet again. In 2012, he chooses, rather than spaced out aliens or freaky weather conditions, the effect of a gigantic solar flare on the earth's core.

The Good, The Bad And The Wtf: Never Been Klingon

Life lesson #1: Never trust DVD menus. They are programmed by humans, and humans lie. Therefore, DVD menus lie. If you buy one and the menu looks wrong, do not show fear. Just stand firm and call your player a filthy liar. Life lesson #2: Don't teach your newborn a fictional alien language instead of English. That is cruel. What's the matter with you? Life lesson #3: Don't take life lessons from a man on the internet. Wait, what's going on? Oh, right, movie updates. Here they are.

On opposite sides of the world, my 20-year-old college student daughter Nora and I both enjoyed 2012, which was more fun than I was expecting. Director Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow) crafted a truly global movie, starting off in a mine shaft in India and proceeding to blow up Yellowstone National Park and destroy the world’s most revered monuments, from the White House and The Vatican’s Sistine Chapel to Brazil’s Christ The Redeemer. (Critics were mixed.) After its second weekend, the utterly implausible disaster E-ride has already racked up $268-million worldwide. “#1 Movie in the World!” reads the LATimes ad headline. Roland Emmerich’s Godzilla Blu-ray Review

21 November 2009 8:01 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Recently, I reviewed Waterworld. Now I’m talking about 1998’s disaster opus Godzilla. These are two of the biggest flops of the 1990’s. Overhyped and overproduced, and expensive as all get out, perhaps they’re hitting Blu-ray in the hopes of eeking out profits. Someone thought they might have had something here, but when Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin came off of Independence Day, this was going to be the next big thing, but instead they misfired. My review of 1998’s Godzilla after the jump.

Mathew Broderick stars as Dr. Niko Tatopoulos, a scientist who studies the effects of nuclear mutations. He’s brought in by the American government when Godzilla begins fucking things up. At first, Godzilla is outside of Tokyo, but then he comes to New York. Long swim. Emmerich stages everything like ID4, so there’s some moments, but the destruction doesn’t take your breath away. »

Director Roland Emmerich Give Us Something to Look Forward to in 2012

19 November 2009 6:53 PM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Judging by a short conversation with him, director Roland Emmerich doesn't seem megalomaniacal. In fact, he seems so down-home and unassuming, that you just want to grab him, a beer -- being the good German that he is -- and sit in rapt attention as he tells how he destroyed the world -- again. You see, Emmerich is the great manipulator who has ravaged cities and continents thanks to the wonders of cinema. He destroyed New York via his remake of Godzilla and had world's capitals blasted through an alien invasion in Independence Day. The 54-year-old former painter and sculptor has ravaged this planet in other ways; he even had it frozen under sheets of ice when he produced and directed The Day After Tomorrow. But now he's gone all out shuffling all the continents into the oceans; in... »

Disaster movie 2012 opens with $225m tidal wave at global box office

17 November 2009 4:37 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

The End Of The World proved to be a massive attraction for moviegoers as Roland Emmerich's 2012 opened this weekend with an earth-shattering $225million at the worldwide box office.

Ticket sales in the Us and Canada brought in $65million, with the foreign tally of $160million from 105 countries, led by France.

Sony's Columbia Pictures said the film scored the highest worldwide opening for an original film not based on an established franchise, brand or best-seller.

In global terms, it ranks No 9 for film openings, behind (from No1 to 8) Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Spider-Man 3, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and The Da Vinci Code.

2012 brings Indian summer to UK box office

17 November 2009 7:38 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Roland Emmerich's disaster blockbuster heralds a period of sunny box-office receipts, with the vampires and werewolves of Twilight set to keep the winter chill at bay next week

The winner

Question: when is a summer blockbuster not a summer blockbuster? Answer: when it's released in November, of course. Roland Emmerich's patented formula of awesome planetary destruction and human heroics always screams out for a summer release, but this year Sony chose not to throw his 2012 into a competitive market already crowded with Transformers, Terminators and Wolverine. And the strategy has paid off, with an opening gross of £6.49m, proof that audiences will line up to see a big, dumb action flick no matter what month it is.

It's not the biggest opening of the year – it is behind both Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. But if you strip out the »

2012 (Film Review)

The world ends not with a bang or a whimper but a resounding 'Meh' in Roland Emmerich's 2012, the last and least of his end of the world film series. Emmerich, who first made a splash with Independence Day, a hipster update of George Pal's War Of The Worlds, returns to Pal's work with 2012.

An uncredited updating of Pal's When Worlds Collide, 2012 has the world coming to an end as Earth's core heats up creating floods that will soon kill all life on Earth. We follow a lowly scientist (an interesting Chiwetel Ejiofor), the Us President (Danny Glover, who seems to blandly repeat Morgan Freeman's dialogue from the superior Deep Impact), then jump to a down on his luck sci-fi writer/limo driver (a puffy John Cusack), his perky, estranged wife (Amanda Peet--a great actress given nothing to do), two movie-cute kids (One of whom is named 'Noah', »

‘Independence Day’ Sequel to Take Two Films

16 November 2009 7:53 PM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Well, it looks like the possibility of a sequel to Independence Day is more than just a rumor. In a recent interview with MTV News, director Roland Emmerich revealed that, while there’s no script as of yet, there is definitely an idea for what the sequel will entail.

Emmerich plans on the sequel having a much larger scope than the original film, and says that the sequel will actually consist of two films that simply pick up where the first left off.

While I’m still skeptical as to how well an Independence Day sequel will play out, it’s reassuring to know that several of the stars from the film have already agreed to reprise their roles for subsequent films. Audiences will get to see Will Smith once again grace the screen as Captain Steve Hiller, and Bill Pullman will return as the president who helped steer the world through its alien invasion. »
