Review: 2012

6 hours ago | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

2012 is one of those strange movies where you feel like you shouldn’t like it but cant help yourself enjoying and even sometimes laughing at the world’s destruction, either because of it’s slightly cheesy and humorous script or because the effects are so darn good that it just looks fantastic.

If you’ve not been following the story on HeyUGuys previously, 2012 is a story, in a nutshell, about the end of the world. I’m going to try and write this review with zero spoilers but I’ll warn you before I say anything close to one.

In the movie, there are two sets of main characters, the first is led by Oliver Platt and Chiwetel Ejiofor as the government scientists who spot that disaster is going to occur in 2009. The other group are a family led by John Cusack who is struggling to come to terms with the divorce from his wife, »

You sank my ‘Battleship’: Peter Berg’s adaptation to feature aliens?

13 hours ago | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Director Peter Berg, who is known for chugging a few Red Bulls with his cereal, may be smoking to much peyote or watching too many Roland Emmerich/Michael Bay movies.

According to an unnamed source (grains of salt should be included), Latino Review is reporting that Berg’s big-screen adaptation of everyone’s favorite naval game, Battleship, will not feature your regular run-of-the-mill naval fights. Instead, it will be something out of this world.

The film will not merely focus on two countries matching wits on the open seas, it will have an international fleet (wait) fighting (for) against (it) aliens. Aliens…

Aliens. The toy trash craze is really heading into weird territory. With movies like Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, one could understand why filmmakers and studios were so hellbent on making idiocy the genre du jour for audiences purely for the »

10 Most Fascinating 'End of the World' Movies

22 hours ago | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

There are many theories, ideas or should I say 'schools of thought' on how the world would end. At the height of the Cold War, nuclear annihilation ranks at the very top. While others argue it will not be man who will destroy the world (directly) but - an epidemic of global proportions (most probably from a potent strain of virus - think: I am Legend) or severe climactic change (another ice age perhaps? That would be Day After Tommorow right?) or mechanical uprising (The Terminator, anyone?) or even attack from the outside - conquering aliens (Mars Attacks!) or perhaps an asteroid. And let's not forget zombies!

Chapman Encounters of The Fourth Kind

7 November 2009 10:28 AM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Since it first started airing trailers in front of District 9, there's been some debate over whether or not Universal Studios' Fourth Kind is a true story or not.

Evidence for it being true is the purported 'real' footage of the 'real' Dr. Abigail Tyler. The strongest claim for it's authenticity is all the footage of Dr. Tyler in the film is stamped "Chapman University", a real Southern California school.  Surely, a real university would not participate in such shenanigans...?

First clue as to the existence of "Dr. Abigail Tyler" is that her online research started a month ago, coincidentally when Fourth Kind turned on it's PR blitz.

So how did they get Chapman University in on the hoax?  Fourth Kind's writer/director Olatunde Osunsanmi is an alumni of the school. Chapman's Chappenings site comes clean on Osunsanmi and alien owls here.

Even though this has been debunked, Chapman »

'2012's Roland Emmerich: Grilled

6 November 2009 4:03 PM, PST | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

By Iain Blair

You can usually set your calendar by Roland Emmerich and one of his huge summer disaster spectacles, such “The Day After Tomorrow” or “Independence Day.”

But this year something’s off with his timing – appropriately enough, it turns out, as his latest mega-disaster, “2012,” is based on doomsday interpretations of the Mayan calendar and its apparent prediction that a cataclysm of epic proportions awaits the earth in 2012.

Obviously this sort of thing can’t be handled by governments and scientists. It takes... »

Preview: 2012

6 November 2009 4:01 PM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Love it or hate it, there’s no denying Independence Day was a big movie, with a place in cinematic history. Roland Emmerich has been the prince of diminishing returns since, but remains the current king of the global disaster movie. With next week’s 2012, he’s hoping to get his career back on track.

10,000 BC was universally panned, so he has decided to go back to what he does best. Namely, destroying contemporary landmarks, and killing a large percentage of the population. Emmerich loves himself a budget, and epic scale CGI, and judging from the trailer, he has used both liberally. There have been plenty of pre-release clips to encourage the hype. You can see a five minute clip in full HD here, some additional clips here, and some behind the scenes footage here.

As usual, however, there is a human story to be told. In this case, it »

Dierks Bentley Calls Ft. Hood Hero to Offer Thanks

6 November 2009 3:35 PM, PST | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

When country star Dierks Bentley met Sgt. Kimberly Munley last July as he played an Independence Day concert at Ft. Hood, the police officer stood out to him. "She was on the police force and was off to the side but I could tell she was a fan," he told People Friday. Munley waited quietly until the crowd thinned out and then approached Bentley for a picture, which she posted as her Twitter profile image. Now, it's the singer who is proud to be pictured with Munley, hailed as a hero after stopping Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, the alleged the »

Roland Emmerich Blames Fox, George W. Bush for the Lack of an Independence Day 2

6 November 2009 11:35 AM, PST | SciFiCool.com | See recent SciFiCool.com news »

German director Roland Emmerich, aka the man who made death porn on a global scale (aka disaster films) popular again, blames the lack of a sequel to “Independence Day” on the studio’s unwillingness to pay Will Smith his due. And oh yeah, that guy George W. Bush is also to blame, too. In a roundtable interview with critics, Emmerich tells CinemaBlend that the reason why he hasn’t been enthusiastic about making an “ID4″ earlier is that Bush was in office at the time and, apparently, he didn’t want to make a movie about a heroic President rallying the world against evil alien invaders. Says the Master of Disaster: “In Independence Day, it was about a king who leads his country into a fight against an outside invader. I didn’t want to make that movie during the Bush years. It was not thought that George W. Bush »

‘2012′ To Have Spin-Off TV Series 2013?

6 November 2009 10:43 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Probably The spectacle movie of 2009 is going to end up being Roland Emmerich’s latest big-budget disaster flick, 2012, which focuses on the Mayan prophecy that the world will end in December of the year 2012. The $200 million, special-effects laden, film stars the likes of John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Woody Harrelson, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Thandie Newton and Danny Glover, and is set to crash into theaters in a week’s time.

However, with a film of this size, you know the buck rarely stops at one. In this case, Emmerich is already looking ahead at making more out of his latest disaster tale. Recently news surfaced that there was a 2012 sequel spin-off  TV series in the works (yes, they’re thinking about furthering this seemingly finite disaster story). But wait, how can there be a sequel, in any form, of 2012… isn’t it supposed to be about the end of the world? That’s what I thought, »

2012 director Roland Emmerich admits turning down superhero film offers

6 November 2009 9:31 AM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Roland Emmerich, whose disaster movie 2012 erupts on to the big screen on November 13, has revealed he finds superhero movies boring and has rejected every offer to direct a comic book adaptation.

Emmerich, whose other credits include Godzilla, The Day After Tomorrow, Independence Day and Stargate, admitted he was "a little worried" about the culture of remakes and adaptations.

He said: "I don't know how many more superheroes they can pull out of their hat. I hate superheroes.

"I always say no to every one that I get offered because I feel that it's boring. But they seem to be successful for some of the people.

"Some of them do [make money], some don't. But they make more money than they lose so they keep making them, and when one works then they have a franchise."

Speaking in Sci Fi Now magazine, he continued: "It's very unimaginative. I'm a total fan of people »

Interview – Stargate Universe's David Blue

5 November 2009 3:49 PM, PST | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Stargate: Universe's producers were tasked with a somewhat unorthodox mission: reach outside of the Stargate franchise's existing fan-base and bring in viewers who had never watched a single episode of 'Gate. In order to accomplish that, the Sgu story had to quickly get these viewers up to speed and make them feel at home in the Stargate universe. Enter David Blue's Eli. The character of Eli, a brainy gamer who unknowingly cracks an alien code embedded in an Mmo and is drafted into the Stargate program, is not only a vital member of the Sgu story, he is also the voice for Stargate newbies within the Sgu universe. Chances are, if you have a question Eli is going to ask it; if you are puzzled by the audacity of the Stargate rules, Eli will emote your frustration. However, don't dismiss Blue's Eli as purely a utility character. Eli »

Exclusive: Roland Emmerich Wants To Make Independence Day 2 Because Of Obama

5 November 2009 1:58 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Last time we heard from Roland Emmerich about plans for a second Independence Day movie, he said that Fox was balking at putting up the money for Will Smith to be part of the film. At today's press day for 2012, I asked Emmerich both about the status of the funding and his reason for wanting to make the movie to begin with. Emmerich had said not 10 minutes earlier, in a roundtable interview, that sequels were silly, but he says that Independence Day is different: "I think everybody has a defining moment or a defining film who works in this business. It's the one I think I will be remembered for. I kind of think it would be great to do." As for why it's taken so long to get the sequel started, you can blame George W. Bush. "In Independence Day, it was about a king who leads his country »

Two More Clips from Roland Emmerich’s ‘2012’

5 November 2009 1:35 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Columbia Pictures recently released two more clips from the upcoming disaster movie, 2012. These clips, while not as long as the five minute clip we previously posted, still have yet to show anything that makes me feel like this film will be anything more than a money-grab at the end of the world. (Which, I guess, would be the perfect time to do it).

In the first clip we find a zombie-free Woody Harrelson playing “crazy” internet blogger Charlie Frost who knows everything there is to know about the end of the world and warns Jackson Curtis (John Cusack) that, in typical movie fashion, the destruction will start in Hollywood, California. (It’s movies like this that always make me feel better about living in Michigan. So far it looks like I’m surviving Independence Day and when Skynet becomes self-aware on Judgement Day).

In the second clip we find the »
