Exclusive: Tony Shalhoub Talks ‘Monk’ Finale, Life After The Show

3 December 2009 3:00 PM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Over the past 8 years, Monk has been a front runner for the USA network, earning handfuls of accolades and awards from the Emmys to the Golden Globes. We recently got a chance to sit down with the man behind the neurotic protagonist, Tony Shalhoub, about the finale, his life after Monk, and his eclectic film career.

The Flickcast: What can you tell me about the upcoming series finale?

Tony Shalhoub: Well, I can’t tell you much, because I wouldn’t want to give it away. What I can tell you is that unlike many of our other episodes, this two-parter goes to a really dark place for this character. The show turns into much more of a Drama than a Dramedy.

We know that Monk is sick, and he just goes right to the edge. He realizes he’s going to die, so he becomes fearless in a way. »

Birthday Suits, Well Directed

30 November 2009 6:05 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Lights. Cameras. Birthday Action (for this, the 30th of November). Only one month left to go and it's 2010. How crazy is that?

Ridley, Terrence (in the 70s) and Marc

1835 Mark Twain's books have been adapted into movies ever since the movies began. Most notably The Prince and the Pauper and any tale of Huck Finn or Tom Sawyer

1920 Virginia Mayo 40s and 50s star, frequent Danny Kaye foil

1926 Richard Crenna, character actor

1927 Robert Guillaume, "Benson"

1929 Dick Clark, seemingly immortal creature who may finally be destroyed by the rise of his spiritual offspring Ryan Seacrest. It's all very Cronos vs. Zeus, only without the thunderbolts

1937 Ridley Scott, manly director whose movies are usually way better when they're shot through with a strong female presence. Consider the three classics: Blade Runner, Thelma & Louise, Alien. The rest of the filmography surely has its moments but that's the trinity right there.

1943 Terence Malick, »

Jones Departs Lincoln Lawyer Over 'Creative Differences'

24 November 2009 4:16 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Tommy Lee Jones has quit his role as director and actor on The Lincoln Lawyer due to creative differences.

The Oscar-winner was set to helm the movie and appear alongside Matthew McConaughey in the adaptation of Michael Connelly's hit novel.

But the Men In Black star has decided to bow out of the project after disagreeing with screenwriter John Romano over the script, according to Variety.

The studio, Lakeshore Entertainment, is now looking for another filmmaker and star before the production begins shooting in spring 2010. »

The Howling Set for Reboot - Werewolves Making a Comeback?

22 November 2009 10:38 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

New Moon? More like Old Moon! Zing! Sure the second installment of the Twilight Saga raked in piles of money this past weekend, but even the trendy, emo vampire flick has illustrated that (as Will Smith's character from Men in Black might say) vampires are old and busted, but werewolves are the new hotness. With Universal's Wolfman on the horizon, another project that might benefit from this new trend came out of nowhere earlier this month, but Variety has only just caught on to the news that The Howling, the werewolf series of films spawned by Joe Dante, is set for a franchise reboot with The Howling: Reborn. Though plot details are being kept under tight wraps, the film is already set to start production in February for a Halloween release. So as of now it sounds like they're starting The Howling all over again from scratch, but »

Fringe Star Defends Us Against ‘UFO’

22 November 2009 9:46 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

I've never seen "Fringe," so I have to assume that it's a science fiction show about a few teenagers working out their relationship problems, sneaking into each other's bedrooms and pondering deep, deep thoughts out on the local lake. Now, Joshua Jackson will be attempting to build a film career off of his television career on said show. What's that you say? He's already done this once before? Good to know. Also good to know is that Variety is reporting that the star has signed on to play the lead in the film adaptation of a cult hit 1970s British television show (you can see why Hollywood is clamoring for it). This raises two questions: Can an actor jump to movies, fail, jump back to television, and then jump back into movies and succeed? Where the hell is our big screen "Red Dwarf" movie? The second is clearly the more important, but »

Elfman Replaced On "The Wolfman"

14 November 2009 11:49 AM, PST | www.ohmygore.com/ | See recent OhMyGore news »

Famed "Batman", "Spider-man", "Men In Black" and "Wanted" composer Danny Elfman has been given the boot from the upcoming big budget "The Wolfman" remake according to Cinemusic.net and The Playlist. What's strange is Elfman had apparently already written an entire score for the new horror movie said to be similar to Wojciech Kilar's haunting work in "Bram Stocker's Dracula", however the film's constantly shifting release dates mean that Elfman simply doesn't have the time to stay with the project and finish his work. Instead, Paul Haslinger ("Underworld", "Shoot 'Em Up") has been brought onboard to do the film's soundtrack and no doubt give it a more grungy, rock-based sound. In a strange bit of similitude, Haslinger was a member of Tangerine Dream - the influential 80's electronic... »

Emmerich Wants to Celebrate ‘Independence Day’ Again. And Again.

12 November 2009 9:00 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

After watching 2012 the other day, which feels like it should have been called Independence Day, 2012, I can't say I'm thrilled to hear Roland Emmerich discuss a fervor for not only making a sequel, but making two for the film that really vaulted him into the great beyond of filmmaking. Yeah, yeah, Stargate was awesome, too. According to the MTV Movies Blog, Emmerich really wants to roll the dice on more ID movies. The money quote here: What we want to do in the next – it's actually two movies – we want to do a bigger arc," he explained. "Independence Day was always like the king who leads his troops into battle against an evil force, and that stays like that." So we'd need Big Willy back. Maybe see what Jeff Goldblum has going on these days. And we'd need Roland Emmerich's record to keep spinning, his car to keep idling, and »

The Pull List Comic Reviews: ‘S.W.O.R.D.’, ‘Punishermax’, ‘Strange’ and More

12 November 2009 12:00 PM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Welcome to another edition of The Pull List Comic Reviews! We’ve got a lot off good issues to get through, so let’s get to it. As always, Warning: Spoilers Ahead.

Pull Of The Week:

S.W.O.R.D. #1 – Marvel Comics – $3.99 Us

Writer: Kieron Gillen

Artists: Steven Sanders, Jamie McKelvie

Score: 9.0

Spinning out of Joss Whedon and John Cassaday’s seminal Astonishing X-Men run, S.W.O.R.D. is the new title focusing on the organization entrusted to ensure that alien invasions are kept to a minimum. The Sentient World Observation and Response Department’s co-commander, Abigail Brand, has enough on her plate as it is, but having Henry Peter Gyrich – yes, That guy – as your co-commander simply can’t be a good thing.

After making a name for himself with the critically acclaimed Phonogram series, Marvel thought that writer Kieron Gillen would be able to handle the launch of a new, »

Best News You’ll Hear Today: Old Boy Remake Canned

10 November 2009 5:20 AM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Having recently revisited Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy, I’ve come to the conclusion that that film has a little slice of everything. It has incredibly light humor followed by the darkest of gallows humor,  and then proceeds to toss any funny business aside to strike at some of the darkest themes I’ve ever seen in a film. It’s one of those movies that could only be satisfactorily completed in another country with values and tolerance levels significantly different from our own.

Which is why the idea that Steven Spielberg would be teaming with Will Smith to deliver a remake of the film was a horrible one indeed. There’s no way they could possibly create something as powerful as the original. It just wasn’t feasible in Hollywood.

The great news is that Latino Review is reporting the remake dead in the water, as Spielberg and Smith have jumped ship. »

Smith's Love Advances Snubbed At School

5 November 2009 8:11 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Movie star Will Smith struggled to woo women before meeting wife Jada - his confidence took a beating after a gorgeous classmate broke his heart at school.

The Men In Black star admits that, despite his confident demeanour, he felt uneasy with women ever since he was snubbed by his boyhood crush while growing up in Pennsylvania.

He tells Pride magazine, "I have had only five girlfriends in my entire life. I needed to know the chick a long time before I even said anything. The problem was, I could never put myself out there. At school, I was madly in love with this girl. Her name was Charlene Brown. During a school assembly, I caught her eye, and to this day I do not know why, but I screamed out, 'Hey Charlene, how are you feeling?' And over 1,000 students' heads I heard her shout back, 'Too good for you!'

"From that moment, I never approached or said a word to a girl unless I was absolutely certain that she liked me. You never forget. Even with the wife, I make sure she is in the mood before I approach. Charlene never leaves your head." »

Tropic Thunder scribe tapped for Men in Black 3?

4 November 2009 5:14 AM, PST | Denver Movies Examiner | See recent Denver Movies Examiner news »

Sony Pictures has tapped Tropic Thunder scribe Etan Cohen to pen the script for the third installment of Men in Black.

Cohen is midway through the first draft of the film. No word on any possible plot points but the script is believed to include aliens, cool gadgets and smart-looking suits with somebody getting slimmed.

Director of the first two Men in Black films, Barry Sonnenfeld, will return to helm the third chapter.

Original stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones have yet to formally sign on to the project. If demands are met and large sacks of cash are quickly exchanged in a dark alley, Men in Black 3 could begin production as early as next spring. Both actors are reportedly waiting to see a finished script.

Let’s be clear. This project has more to do with Will Smith than Tommy Lee Jones. If Smith doesn’t come back to the series, »

The Good, The Bad And The Wtf: Sands of Not My Freakin' Dime

4 November 2009 1:09 AM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

It's the mid-week report of the good, bad and you-know-what-the-what here, as we compile the movie news from the past week and a half. Yes, you'll have more at the end of the week—but for now, let us all cringe together as we see stomach news of the 2012 motion sickness experience, an Mib without Will Smith, and the audacity of some people to shoot a barely visible topless scene and hype it up like it was Basic Instinct 3.

The Good

• For years, there have been several attempts to do a sequel to Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, none of them ever came close to moving ahead. Speaking to MTV last week, director Robert Zemeckis set the record straight: that this time he is personally involved and really excited to do the sequel, and that he has commissioned original scribes Jeffrey Price and Peter Seaman to write the screenplay. Let's hope »

Terminator Rights Up for Grabs, Whedon Bids

3 November 2009 6:54 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

The rights for the Terminator franchise are headed for an auction as the Halcyon Company who owns them files for Chapter 11.

I hinted this would happen last month, but now Halcyon is serious about unloading its largest asset by January 2010.  The company purchased the rights in 2007 for $25-30 million before churning out a sequel that made $380 million worldwide.  An exec with Fti Capital Advisers claims the property is worth $60-70 million now.  Maybe those suits didn’t see Terminator Salvation.

Sony is definitely interested, especially considering their two biggest franchises are Men in Black and Spider-Man, both of which are already headed for a third and fourth.  Summit Entertainment is also considering it, what with all the Twilight money they have to throw around these days.  Plus the rest of the major studios considering the potential.

The winner would get the whole Terminator bundle: future movies, the “Sarah Connor Chronicles »

It was announced last week that "Men in Black 3" has been green lit by Columbia Pictures. Reportedly Barry Sonnenfeld, director of the first two "Mib" films will be at the helm once again, and Etan Cohen, who wrote "Tropic Thunder," is already working on the script. The big grey area...and this is a Big grey area...is if Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones will be back in "Black." Clearly, without them, the show can't go on.
