- Although popular characters from the video games, like Mileena and Noob Saibot appear in the film, they are never mentioned by name.
- Ray Park's first film role was as Rayden's fight double in this movie.
- Both Deron McBee (Motaro) and Lynn 'Red' Williams (Jax) are former "American Gladiators" (1989), and they have a fight scene in this film together.
- Dana Hee, who plays Mileena, was Kitana's stunt double in the previous film. In the game's storyline, Mileena is actually a clone of Kitana raised as her sister.
- The red ninja, Ermac, is played by the film's stunt co-ordinator, John Medlen.
- Tony Jaa doubled for Robin Shou in quite a few stunt sequences.
- Due to scheduling and $$$ various of the actors and stuntmen had to do several roles. Examples are Ray Park who did two roles (Raptor, Tarkatan) and stunt work, J.J. Perry who did two roles (Scorpion, Cyrax) and stunt work and Dennis Keiffer, John Medlen, Dana Hee, Tyrone Wiggins, Keith Cooke an Ridley Tsui who all had a credited acting part and a stunt credit.
- Chris Casamassa was to reprise his role as Scorpion, but he was committed to do stunt work in Batman & Robin (1997).
- Michael Jai White was scheduled to play as Jax, but eventually he got the lead part in Spawn (1997) instead.
- James Remar apparently auditioned for Rayden. Christopher Lambert was apparently interested in reprising Rayden but was committed to Beowulf (1999) at the time.
- Sylvester Stallone turn down the role for Baraka.
- Though Musetta Vander and Talisa Soto play mother (Sindel) and daughter (Kitana) respectively, in the real life the actresses are only four years apart in age.

- SPOILER: Despite the fact that Robin Shou (Liu Kang) and Talisa Soto (Kitana) reprised their roles from the first film, the roles of the other characters are portrayed by different actors. The only other actor to return was Keith Cooke (Reptile in the first film), as Sub-Zero.
