Helen Hunt may take on Maura Tierney's Parenthood role

15 September 2009 7:33 AM, PDT | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

When Maura Tierney had to leave Parenthood because she needs to undergo treatment for breast cancer, there was speculation about who might replace her since the NBC project would be resuming. Well, the name that's come to the fore as Maura's replacement is a good one. Oscar and Emmy-winner Helen Hunt is in discussions for Parenthood, and usually if they're talking and it's in the trades, it's close to being a done deal.

If I were advising her and she cared about what I think, I'd tell Helen to take it. While Helen's TV experience was in a sitcom, Mad About You, she's better in dramedy. That's what As Good As It Gets was, and it got her an Oscar!Continue reading Helen Hunt may take on Maura Tierney's Parenthood role

Judd Apatow & James L. Brooks Are 'Funny People' With Similar Careers

5 August 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

History isn't typically a laughing matter, but in the case of famed director-producer-writer James L. Brooks, it usually is. Brooks, whose credits include "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," "Taxi" and "The Simpsons," has a long and esteemed history in the movie and television business, though his hasn't always been an easy road. Still, it's also not a unique road; the path that Brooks traversed has been walked before, and it's certainly being walked again.

Look no further than "Funny People" director Judd Apatow, whose career is starting to mirror that of James L. Brooks. Sure, the two have wandered down different forks in the road at times, but Apatow's trajectory is nonetheless similar to Brooks' own in some very meaningful ways.

For one, both Brooks and Apatow are well-known for their works on high quality television programming. Brooks created "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," which paved the way for spin-off series' "Rhoda" and "Lou Grant. …

Film: Review:The Answer Man

23 July 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

The Answer Man combines the worst of both worlds: It offers the ugly digital video, negligible production values, and manufactured grit of a Sundance loser with the pandering formula, sentiment, and romantic-comedy clichés of Hollywood pap. Unoriginality is the greatest and most flagrant of its many sins; it’s essentially a faux-indie As Good As It Gets with Jeff Daniels reprising his Squid And The Whale role as a misanthropic writer who views humanity as an unfortunate disease to be avoided at all costs. But where Daniels’ Whale arch-snob was genuinely malevolent and sour, his protagonist here has a …

Review: ‘The Answer Man’

19 July 2009 1:42 PM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

It wasn’t until half way through this film that I realized I was just watching another version of “As Good As It Gets.” That’s not exactly a good thing. The story is about Arlen Faber (Jeff Daniels), a man who wrote a book twenty years ago entitled “Me and God,” in which he claimed to have actually spoken with God. The book spun off a whole other series of books including “The Me and God Diet” and “Understanding Me and God,” none of which were written by Arlen.

Arlen has been a shut in for quite a while, trying to figure out the meaning of life himself by reading large volumes of books on the subject. He’s the typical cranky, doesn’t want to deal with the outside world kind of author, and the moment anyone finds out who he is, they make his life an annoying hell. …

Jack Nicholson

18 June 2009 12:46 AM, PDT | Celebrity Bio Examiner | See recent Celebrity Bio Examiner news »

“Sell crazy some place else -- we’re all stocked up here.” The actor who uttered these words in 1997’s As Good As It Gets might well have been referring to himself. In his 50+ years as a film actor, he certainly has stocked up on nut job roles, while simultaneously (and miraculously) making them somehow likable and sympathetic. Nobody plays crazy like Jack Nicholson. John “Jack” Joseph Nicholson was born on April 22nd, 1937 in New York, New York. He is the son of June Frances Nicholson, a showgirl whose stage name was June Nilson. The identity of Jack’s father is unknown ... even to the actor himself. To avoid scandal, and so that his mother could continue to pursue her stage career, Jack grew up believing that mother was actually his older sister, and that his grandparents, John Nicholson and Ethel Rhoads, were his parents. Jack didn’t learn the …

Greg Kinnear Bonding With Miley Cyrus

17 June 2009 6:21 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

The Last Song is being dreamed up as the way to introduce Miley Cyrus, a.k.a. Hannah Montana, to adult audiences, marking a departure from the TV show and movies that have made her famous. But in all honestly, the movie-- an adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks novel, naturally-- isn't sounding like much of a stretch. Cyrus will play a rebellious teenager sent to live for the summer with her estranged father, whom she bonds with through their one common connection: music. It's pretty much exactly what happens in a single scene of Hannah Montana: The Movie, but stretched to feature length. And I can't decide whether or not I should be interested in the movie because Greg Kinnear has signed on to be the dad (Kelly Preston will play the mom, according to THR). We all love Greg Kinnear when he's good-- As Good As It Gets, Little …

Jack Nicholson Wants To Watch Reese Witherspoon Play Softball

3 June 2009 2:30 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

If a girl you liked had Jack Nicholson as a father, would you be too scared to ask her out? Even if that girl was Reese Witherspoon? I would think so, but then this isn’t a situation I would ever find myself in. Paul Rudd and Owen Wilson will however, according to The Hollywood Reporter: Nicholson is “in talks” to take the role in an untitled romantic comedy from James L. Brooks.

The romantic comedy stars Reese Witherspoon as a professional softball player who is torn between two handsome, available men: Rudd, a nice, ordinary guy, and Wilson, a rakish fellow with one heck of a fastball. It clocks in at 94 miles an hour. This is an important point. I’m not sure why, but that’s about as specific as THR gets with regards to the story.

Nicholson will play Witherspoon’s father, stepping into a role that …

Nicholson And Brooks Set To Reteam

3 June 2009 1:23 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Jack Nicholson had better start clearing space on his mantelpiece for another Oscar. At least, that’s if his history with James L. Brooks is anything to go by. The legendary actor and the writer-director have worked together three times. One was a cameo in Broadcast News. The other two were on Terms Of Endearment and As Good As It Gets – both times Nicholson won Oscars. So you can excuse Jack for clearing some more room, now that he’s agreed to work with Brooks again, as a very late replacement for Bill Murray in the director’s as-yet untitled Paul Rudd/Reese Witherspoon/Owen Wilson romantic comedy.Murray had been in talks for a long time about playing the father of Rudd’s character, who’s a white-collar executive vying with Wilson’s baseball pitcher for Witherspoon’s affections. But, with just two weeks to go before filming, Murray …

Jack Nicholson Rom-Coms With Reese Witherspoon

2 June 2009 11:07 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Jack Nicholson's last romantic comedy was 1997's As Good As It Gets and even then he seemed a little old to be wandering the halls of the rom-com world. Now at the outwart age of 137 (actual age 72), he's jumping back into the romance game. Variety says he's been added to the cast of an untitled romantic comedy being helmed by James L. Brooks. The film is an ensemble and Jack is the missing piece of the puzzle. Already on board are Paul Rudd, Reese Witherspoon, and Owen Wilson. Bill Murray had been up for the Nicholson part, but lost interest leaving room for Jack to replace him. I bet Bill Murray's feeling pretty old right about now. In the film, Jack will play the wealthy father of Paul Rudd's character. Age appropriate I guess. As long as we're over the notion of Nicholson as some romantic lead. …

Jack Nicholson May Star in James L. Brooks Comedy

2 June 2009 8:20 PM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Variety reports that Jack Nicholson is close to a deal for a starring role in the next project from writer-director James L. Brooks (Terms of Endearment, Broadcast News, As Good As It Gets).

The untitled romantic comedy would see Nicholson starring opposite Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd, and Owen Wilson. Bill Murray was in talks for the part, but production begins in two weeks and Murray has reportedly lost interest in the project and dropped out of contact with the studio. If cast, Nicholson would play the father of Rudd's character, an executive trying to win Witherspoon's heart. Wilson plays a professional baseball pitcher who's also, of course, Witherspoon's other love interest

Brooks is producing the picture, along with Paula Weinstein, Laurence Mark, and Julie Ansell, and it's scheduled for a December 2009 release.

When I want a cookie, I go to my mom. When my mom wants a foot rub, she goes to Jack Nicholson. When Jack Nicholson wants an Oscar, he goes to James L. Brooks. Jack Nicholson in Talks for New James L. Brooks Film

2 June 2009 11:43 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

While James L. Brooks' new film doesn't quite have a title yet, the cast is rounding out with the possible addition of a screen legend. According to Variety, Jack Nicholson is in negotiations to join the cast of the Untitled James L. Brooks Project.

If Nicholson should sign on, he would join a cast that already includes Paul Rudd, Reese Witherspoon and Owen Wilson. It was said that Bill Murray was in extensive talks to portray the father of Rudd's character, it seems that Murray has lost interest in the film and Nicholson may come on board as the last key member of the cast.

The story is said to revolve around a love triangle, with both Rudd's character, a white-collar executive, and Wilson's character, a pro baseball pitcher, both trying to win Witherspoon's character over.

Nicholson is no stranger to Brooks' work, with two of his three Oscar …

Playing it Straight

While Sean Penn’s recent Best Actor Oscar win for Milk helped bring Harvey Milk’s message to a wide audience — both from the increased visibility of the film and from Penn’s moving acceptance speech — the occasion marked another instance of a Hollywood tradition: a gay character played by a heterosexual actor.

Penn, like Tom Hanks (Philadelphia [1993]) and William Hurt (Kiss of the Spider Woman [1985]) before him, was praised for his “bravery” for taking on the role and even — eek! — kissing another man.

Gay actors, on the other hand, get no such credit for playing gay roles; let’s not forget the year that Rupert Everett’s hilarious supporting turn in My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997) was ignored by the Academy, with the implication that queer thespians need merely show up to play queer characters, with no actual acting involved. (To add insult to injury, that same year saw …

Watch out, Mickey Rourke: Indie Spirit is Oscar's consolation prize

21 February 2009 1:43 PM, PST | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

The Independent Spirit award is supposed to salute what past ceremony host Samuel L. Jackson once called "the strange, the weird, the eclectic, the visionary, the new blood." Ideally, its purpose is to help those low-profile quality films that could use a boost so that someday, maybe, the filmmakers and performers could compete in the big league of the Oscars.

And back when the Spirits took flight, they tried hard to keep to that mission. Indeed, its first best-picture winner in 1985, "After Hours," wasn't nominated for a single Oscar. But then "Platoon" won best pic at both the Spirits and the Oscars the next year. From then on, the Spirits focused more and more on seemingly academy-friendly films, with a corresponding increase in its own profile. While 1987 best-pic winner "River's Edge" was snubbed at the Oscars, other early champs made it into Oscar categories like screenplay ("sex, lies and videotape, …
