"Everything else is pure theory": What-if Movies

13 November 2009 9:36 AM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

A coin flip splits the new movie "Uncertainty" in two. That's how a young couple (played by Lynn Collins and Joseph Gordon-Levitt) at a turning point in their relationship decide which way to go on the Brooklyn Bridge. Who picks heads over tails ultimately isn't important, because the film follows both paths -- in one storyline, the two head to Manhattan, find a cell phone in a cab and become embroiled in a thriller, while in the other, they go to a family barbecue in Brooklyn and navigate more personal dramas. Which reality is the "real" one? The title should give you a clue.

"Uncertainty"'s not the first film to explore those what-if musings we've all indulged in, the ones that every holiday season drive George Bailey to an angelic vision of what the world would be like if he'd never existed. But it is one of a select …

Check Out 'The Messenger,' 'Uncertainty' And 'William Kunstler: Disturbing The Universe' In This Week's unLimited

10 November 2009 9:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

After the record-breaking success of "Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire" over the weekend, I'm more hopeful for films starting out in limited release. This week's recommendations may not have the distinction of being championed by Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry, so if you find any of them worth seeing based on my recommendation, it may be more necessary for you to make the effort to get them to play near you.

"The Messenger"

What it is: A skewed romantic drama about a young Iraq War vet (Ben Foster) who is assigned to the Army's Casualty Notification service, where he's partnered with a captain played by Woody Harrelson. While delivering the bad news, he falls for one of the notified widows (Samantha Morton).

Reasons to see it: The film has won awards at the Berlin and Deauville film festivals and as of this writing has a perfect critical score at Rotten Tomatoes. …

Disney Won’t Not Celebrate Opposite Day

8 October 2009 11:14 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Ready to have some fun and a headache? If it actually was opposite day, this news story would read as follows: Oren Aviv, who is not the studio production president at Disney, is terrible at coming up with fun story ideas for Disney to exploit. He didn't conceptualize National Treasure, a film I totally couldn't stand, and definitely did not see in theaters upwards of 4 times. The basic conceptual idea for Opposite Day -- a movie not about a day wherein someone has to do the opposite of their normal daily routine -- hasn't been popular in Hollywood's recent past, and definitely not in movies like Sliding Doors and The Family Man. Disney will not employ Nancy Drew writer Tiffany Paulsen for the Opposite Day project. Paulsen is not also attached to a project that will not be a reboot of the Adventures in Babysitting franchise. That film will definitely not be called Further Adventures in Babysitting …

Preview: Defying Gravity

10 July 2009 5:54 PM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Fox TV Studios, Vancouver’s Omni Film Productions and the Canadian network CTV are teaming up to bring you the show that’s being dubbed “Grey’s Anatomy in space”.  Yeah, that’s a weird tagline, right?  Perhaps a longer explanation is in order.

Back in 2004 the BBC produced a series called Space Odyssey: Voyage to the Planets, which is the inspiration for Defying Gravity.  Space Odyssey was broadcasted as a docudrama about a group of astronauts traveling to different planets.  Defying Gravity has a similar premise: “[it's a] sexy, provocative relationship drama set in the very near future against the background of our solar system, in which eight astronauts from five countries (four women and four men) undertake a mysterious six-year international space mission covering eight billion miles. With the eyes of the world upon them – everything they do is monitored, and every emotion they feel, scrutinized – they soon discover that …

Mr Nobody trailer will mess with your head

26 May 2009 9:51 PM, PDT | TotalFilm | See recent TotalFilm news »

The first promo for sci-fi drama Mr Nobody, starring Jared Leto, has been put online. And it’s a doozy. Quietly sneaking up on us while the big sci-fi movies – your Treks, your Terminators and the like – splashed out on huge campaigns, Jaco van Dormael’s film comes across like Benjamin Button meets Sliding Doors with an extra helping of mind-twitching reality-distortion. Here’s the rough summary, though we’re certain it doesn’t do it justice: Nemo Nobody (Leto) leads an ordinary existence at...

Paltrow's Rat Infestation At New Home

12 April 2009 7:00 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Hollywood actress Gwyneth Paltrow was forced to call in pest control - after discovering her luxury Los Angeles home was overrun by rats.

The Sliding Doors star is renting an apartment near her mother Blythe Danner while she films new movie Iron Man 2.

But she was horrified when her advisers discovered vermin had taken up residence at the plush home, according to Britain's Daily Mirror newspaper.

And the actress was forced to hire an expensive rat catcher to rid the property of the unwanted guests.

A friend tells the publication, "Gwyneth wanted everything to be perfect. She was so excited about moving to L.A. with the family and to be closer to her actress mum. It will be the first time in ages that she, Chris and the children will be living together as a family.

"But her stomach turned at the thought of rats running around. She didn't want her homecoming ruined by those horrible creatures. Being an animal lover, Gwyneth didn't want the vermin harmed, just removed."

The couple applied finishing touches to the summer home last week (begs06Apr09), where they will stay while Paltrow films action sequel Iron Man 2. Martin will take care of their children - Apple, four, and Moses, three - when he returns from the first leg of a world tour with his band Coldplay. …
