'Phantom' Of Cinema Returns

4 September 2008 12:59 AM, PDT | From NYPost.com | See recent New York Post news

'On Nearly every occasion when I've been invited to speak about both fiction and nonfiction writing, someone has asked my opinion of the scandalous disclosure that James Frey had fabricated sections of his memoir 'A Million Little Pieces.'

"I reply that I'm puzzled that people seem more upset by a lie about how long a writer spent in rehab than a lie about whether Saddam Hussein had access to weapons of mass destruction. Inevitably, nervous laughter ripples through the room," writes the critic Francine Prose in Harper's magazine.

Brook: 'I Still Love Zane'

3 September 2008 5:00 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Kelly Brook is "still very much in love" with her ex-fiance Billy Zane - despite splitting from the actor earlier this year.

The British model/actress reportedly ended her four-year relationship with the Titanic star in April after deciding she wasn't ready to marry him.

Brook insists she still harbours feelings for Zane, but isn't ready to commit to the 42-year-old.

She says, "We broke off our engagement a few months ago and we've gone our separate ways. We did our own thing for a while. But because we love each other we have seen each other a few times. I think we want to make it work.

"I'm just not ready to get married. I don't want to rush into something until I'm 100 per cent sure.

"I am single and see myself as single, yet I'm very much in love with Billy - but I'm not in a committed relationship."

'Dark Knight' Tops $500 Million

1 September 2008 11:03 AM, PDT | From syfyportal.com | See recent syfyportal news

As estimated, "The Dark Knight" passed the $500 million mark over the Labor Day holiday weekend in the United States, according to Variety.com. While this puts the Chrisopher Nolan-helmed sequel to 2005's "Batman Begins" within $100 million of "Titanic," it isn't considered likely that the movie's legs will be sturdy enough to catch the James Cameron disaster epic. However, the film has moved up to the third most popular movie of the Labor Day weekend after living in fourth spot for quite some time. It took in $11,025,00. What's next for "Dark Knight?" Although no release date has been set, DVD sales are expected to be strong, but that will likely mean that the film will be pulled from theaters."The Dark Knight" is the most popular movie of 2008 and has broken numerous records ...

Box Office: Thunder Hit By Hurricane

1 September 2008 9:43 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

The box office was hit by a double whammy over the weekend. Not only did it have to suffer through the usual lackluster attendance over the Labor Day holiday -- the only major holiday of the year when attendance traditionally falls -- but it also was hit by the oncoming Hurricane Gustav. Along a wide stretch of the Gulf Coast, movie-theater owners shut down. Those who did not watched many of their patrons evacuate their neighborhoods and take up lodgings in inland emergency shelters; they would not have been in the mood for a night at the movies. Of five new films entering the box-office fray, not one earned $10 million or more. The only film that did was the action-film parody Tropic Thunder with an estimated $11.5 million, which put it in first place for the third straight weekend. It has now taken in $83.8 million -- but the $90-million film is a long way from breaking even after payments to theater owners and the cost of distribution and marketing are taken into account. Babylon A.D. came in second with an unimpressive $9.7 million. (By contrast, the latest Halloween sequel opened a year ago with $26.4 million.) The Dark Knight moved back to third place, taking in $8.8 million and bringing its total to $502.4 million. It is only the second film in history to climb past the $500-million mark and now takes aim at the other one that did -- Titanic, which wound up with a domestic total of $601 million. Few analysts if any, believe that Knight will be able to sink Titanic's record. Warner Bros. distribution chief Dan Feldman said Sunday that he expects the film to finish with about $530-550 million.

The top ten films for the weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Media by Numbers:1. Tropic Thunder, $11.5 million; 2. Babylon A.D., $9.7 million; 3. The Dark Knight, $8.8 million; 4. The House Bunny, $8.3 million; 5. Traitor, $7.9 million; 6. Death Race, $6.2 million; 7. Disaster Movie, $6.2 million; 8. Mamma Mia, $4.4 million; 9. Pineapple Express, $3.5 million; 10. Vicky Cristina Barcelona, $3 million.

Stormy Weather At Box Office

18 August 2008 10:26 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

The Dark Knight's reign as the box-office leader ended propitiously over the weekend as it raked in an additional $16.8 million to become the second-highest grossing film of all time domestically. It has now taken in $471.5 million. Over the past 30 years, the previous No. 2, the original Star Wars, had taken in $461 million. The all-time champ is 1997's Titanic with $601 million. Although it opened with a much smaller gross than Knight, Titanic continued to average around $35 million weekly through its first three months of release. Opening on December 21, 1997, it did not dip below $20 million until the first weekend of April. By that time it had already taken in $515 million. Knight was taken down by the comedy Tropic Thunder which made a modest debut with $26 million. (On a per-theater basis, it was also beaten by the Woody Allen movie Vicky Cristina Barcelona, which averaged $5,361 at 692 theaters, while Knight averaged $4,677 at 3,590 theaters.) The animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars debuted with $15.5 million, while the horror film Mirrors opened with $11.1 million. In its second weekend Pineapple Express dropped a whopping 57 percent to place fifth with $10 million. Overall, the box-office total was nearly identical to the comparable weekend a year ago, suggesting that the Olympic Games telecasts had little impact on ticket sales. (Then again, all of the top films advertised heavily on the telecasts).

The top ten films for the weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Media by Numbers:1. Tropic Thunder, $26 million; 2. The Dark Knight, $16.8 million; 3. Star Wars: The Clone Wars, $15.5 million; 4. Mirrors, $11.1 million; 5. Pineapple Express, $10 million; 6. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, $8.6 million; 7. Mamma Mia!, $6.5 million; 8. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, $5.9 million; 9. Step Brothers, $5 million; 10. Vicky Cristina Barcelona, $3.7 million.

Winslet: 'DiCaprio Sex Scene Was Weird'

15 August 2008 12:52 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Hollywood actress Kate Winslet felt awkward filming a sex scene with Leonardo DiCaprio for a forthcoming movie - because her husband Sam Mendes was directing.

The pair, who played lovers in 1997's Titanic, are working together on upcoming film Revolutionary Road, and are again playing a couple.

But is was during a love scene that Winslet suddenly felt uncomfortable having her husband directing the picture.

She says, "I just kept saying, 'This is too... weird.' And Leo was like, 'Oh, get over it.' And I'm going, 'Yeah, a little reminder: You're my best friend. He's my husband. This is a bit weird.'

"I hadn't realised how much my chemistry with him since Titanic would still stick. It's great to discover we can just slip right into it, like muscle memory."

And Winslet confesses that she knew she would work with DiCaprio again, and orchestrated getting him on-board the movie.

She adds, "We knew that if we were going to do something again, it had to be something big and emotional. I played this very clever cat-and-mouse game to get my husband and then my best friend involved."

Cameron’s Avatar Anticipation Keeps Building

With 17 months to go before the release of James Cameron’s sci-fi epic “Avatar," his first narrative feature since 1997’s “Titanic,” anticipation already is enormous. The wildly ambitious project will be made in stereoscopic 3-D and combine live action and computer animation using visionary new filmmaking techniques, The Hollywood Reporter reminds us. Slated to open Dec. 18, 2009, the production already has been in the works for 2 1/2 years. When completed, Cameron expects “Avatar” to be about 60% CG animation, based on characters created using a newly developed performance capture-based process, and 40% live action, with a lot of VFX in the imagery. “It is the most challenging film I’ve ever made,” Cameron said.

Can Knight Beat Titanic?

12 August 2008 10:36 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

The Dark Knight has come within striking distance of displacing the original Star Wars as the second-highest-grossing movie of all time. Final weekend figures released by Media by Numbers on Monday indicated that the latest Batman sequel grossed $26.1 million over the weekend to keep it at No. 1 for the fourth consecutive week. It has now grossed $441.32 million, or about $20 million short of Star Wars' achievement. However, it's far behind the George Lucas classic when inflation is taken into account. If tickets in 1977, when Star Wars came out, had cost what they do today, the movie would have earned $1.23 billion -- an amount The Dark Knight has no chance of equaling. (When adjusted for inflation the top film of all time is Gone With the Wind, which would have made $1.26 billion in today's dollars.) Analysts also suggest that it has no chance of equaling the $600 million (unadjusted for inflation) that Titanic took in a decade ago. Indeed Warner Bros. distribution chief Dan Fellman conceded as much in an interview appearing in today's (Tuesday) Hollywood Reporter. "Titanic was once in a lifetime, and I don't think we'll ever have another gross like that in the history of the industry," Fellman said.

The top ten films over the weekend, according to final figures compiled by Media by Numbers (figures in parentheses represent total gross to date):1. The Dark Knight, Warner Bros., $26,117,030, 4 Wks. ($441,628,497); 2. Pineapple Express, Sony, $23,245,025, 1 Wks. ($41,318,736 (From Wednesday); 3. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Universal, $16,490,970, 2 Wks. ($71048920); 4. Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, Warner Bros., $10,678,430, 1 Wks. ($19,620,128 (From Wednesday); 5. Step Brothers, Sony, $9,128,662, 3 Wks. ($81132136); 6. Mamma Mia!, Universal, $8,208,580, 4 Wks. ($104,144,505); 7. Journey to the Center of the Earth, Warner Bros., $4,871,478, 5 Wks. ($81,775,323); 8. Hancock, Sony, $3,317,450, 5 Wks. ($221,726,791); 9. Wall-e, Disney, $3140083, 7 Wks. ($210,206,582); 10. Swing Vote, Disney, $3,125,290, 2 Wks. ($12,020,828).

Knight Once Again Wins The Gold

11 August 2008 10:33 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

In its fourth weekend, The Dark Knight moved within striking distance of the original Star Wars to claim the title of the second-highest-grossing movie of all time. With its domestic gross now standing at $441.5 million, the movie should overtake the George Lucas classic, which has had several rereleases that have brought its total to $461 million. At its current pace, it should surpass that figure by next weekend. Nevertheless, box office analysts give the movie scant chance of breaking Titanic's record of $601 million. Once again, the Batman movie wound up at the top of the box-office heap with $26 million, beating out the debut of the stoner comedy Pineapple Express, which earned $22.4 million, according to industry estimates. It was the first movie to hold on to the box office crown for four consecutive weeks since Lord of the Rings: Return of the King did so in 2003. The only other movie to open wide was Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, which landed in fourth place with $10.8 million, behind The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor with $16.1 million. Overall, the box office took in $120 million, down from $154 million for the comparable weekend a year ago. Comparisons, however, are dicey, given this weekend's competition from the opening of the Olympic Games in China.

The top ten films for the weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Media by Numbers:1. The Dark Knight, $26 million; 2. Pineapple Express, $22.4 million; 3. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, $16.1 million; 4. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, $10.8 million; 5. Step Brothers, $8.9 million; 6. Mamma Mia!, $8.1 million; 7. Journey to the Center of the Earth, $4.9 million; 8. Hancock, $3.3 million; 9. Swing Vote, $3.1 million; 10. Wall-e, $3 million.

Woody's Muse Scarlett Should Have Been Winslet

8 August 2008 10:26 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Finding a new muse in Scarlett Johansson was a happy accident for filmmaker Woody Allen because he was planning to make movies with Brit Kate Winslet.

The revered director had cast Titanic star Winslet in Match Point, but the actress had to pull out to spend more time with her kids - so Allen turned to Johansson.

The odd couple has gone on to make three films together, including new movie Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

Allen says, "I had Kate Winslet right up to the last week in pre-production. Then she said she couldn't do the picture because she had worked continually and had spent no time with her child.

"I forgave her and understood that completely but I didn't know Scarlett from a hole in the wall. I thought she was too young; she was only 19 years old at the time.

"But I was in a hole and had to get someone fairly quickly. I knew Scarlett was a great actress and a beauty but I didn't know if she was really what I had written. I hired her and became totally captivated by her."

Allen admits the Lost In Translation star has become his latest muse, following in the footsteps of actresses and ex-lovers Diane Keaton and Mia Farrow.

He adds, "I would always call her, as I did with Diane and Mia for years. Mia was a wonderful actress and she never let me down. The same would be true with Scarlett."
