Paranormal Activity (15)
(Oren Peli, 2007, Us) Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat, Mark Fredrichs. 86 mins
This movie's paranormal box-office activity in the Us has raised expectations sky high, but it sets out to do one thing – scare the pants off you – and does that horribly well. Tapping into our primal fear of things going bump in the night, especially while we're asleep, it gives you the shivers with little more than a grainy fixed-camera shot of a bedroom, as a regular guy tries to get to the bottom of his girlfriend's alleged haunting by trying to video their nocturnal disturbances. There's a certain amount of audience investment required. If you go in determined not to be scared, you probably won't be, but if that's the case, why buy a ticket in the first place?
Law Abiding Citizen (18)
(F Gary Gray, 2009, Us) Gerard Butler, Jamie Foxx, Colm Meaney. 109 mins

Los Angeles (AP) — James Cameron was thinking beyond the big screen when he created the alien world of Pandora. The "Titanic" director worked in tandem with video game developer Ubisoft Montreal on the game based on his upcoming sci-fi epic "Avatar." Opening Dec. 18, the film stars Sam Worthington as a paralyzed human soldier who takes on the form of an exotic blue-skinned alien species called Na'vi on their home world Pandora, a remote paradise teaming with freaky flora and fauna. "James Cameron did something really smart," said Kevin Shortt, story designer of "Avatar: The Game." ''When he started preproduction... »

Susan Boyle's brother Gerry has said he believes a movie of her life will be made and that he'd like Kathy Bates to play the Scottish star. Gerry told RadarOnline.com that he would not be "surprised in the least if there was a film made" of his sister's life, adding he would "personally like to see Kathy Bates play my sister." if she wasn't available Gerry would like British actress Brenda Blethyn to play the role. The story comes amid persistent reports that "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell will be making a film about the 48-year-old Scottish singer. Can't say I agree. At 61 Kathy Bates would be 13 years older than Susan Boyle and is unfortunately well past her prime. Since playing Molly Brown in the Titanic movie she has hardly figured in Hollywood. I'm afraid Gerry Boyle is doing his sister no favors here How about Andi MacDowell? The »

Leonardo DiCaprio is rumoured to have rekindled his relationship with Bar Refaeli. A source told the New York Post newspaper: "They stayed in their own villa. They were shacked up together all weekend." Leonardo and Bar split in June after having an on/off relationship for months. It was believed Bar - who first started dating Leonardo in 2006 - wanted the romance to be more serious, prompting the 'Titanic' actor to call time on their relationship. Since their split, Leonardo has been linked to Pussycat Dolls star Ashley Roberts, Cameron Diaz and Russian Sports Illustrated model Anne Vyalitsyna, while Bar has been seen with Israeli gambling tycoon Teddy Sagi and Brazilian playboy Ricardo Mansur. A Us website has published a first review of James Cameron's forthcoming 3D epic adventure, Avatar, claiming the special effects are 'literally vomit inducing'
Its creators claim that it is the future of film-making, leading the way to a brave new world of stereoscopic cinema. And yet, as the hype continues to build around the James Cameron's upcoming Avatar, one lone voice has dared to break from the script. On the contrary, it says, Avatar is "literally vomit inducing".
Hollywood gossip site gawker.com has published an anonymous early review from what it claims is "a real live entertainment worker", comprehensively panning the film's storyline and visual techniques. It seems safe to assume that none of the review will be quoted on the movie poster.
Budgeted at a reported $237m (£143m), Avatar is Cameron's first dramatic feature since the record-breaking Titanic, back in 1997. The film is a science-fiction »

Jennifer Hudson isn't just starring in a Winnie Mandela biopic, she's singing the title track too. Leona Lewis is doing warbling duties on James Cameron's Avatar. Make sure to leave before the credits roll ...
As the credits rolled on the first Spider-Man movie in an east London cinema sometime in May 2002, it would have taken a disaster of Green Goblinesque proportions to dampen my ebullient mood. As a childhood fan of the comic books and a lover of all things Sam Raimi, the superhero blockbuster was like manna from heaven to my geekboy soul.
And then, suddenly, as if I were being mocked from on high, Chad Kroeger started singing. Yes, the same Chad Kroeger who fronted abominable Nirvana-lite quintet Nickelback, he of the appalling rocker ringlets and grunge-ain't-dead facial hair. In earnest tones, Chad bawled out lyrics about heroes and eagles' wings, worlds full of killin' (and blood spillin' »

Earlier this week, I considered the absence of female-oriented blockbuster fare in today's Hollywood. The staggering weekend success of "New Moon" and the "Twilight" phenomenon overall both point to the value in catering event films to a wider market of viewers. It's a point driven home by the fact that James Cameron's "Titanic" still owns the number one spot on the list of top-grossing domestic box office performers now, more than 12 years after its release.
Clearly, a mix of action and romance works wonders for building a crossover audience. The first "Twilight" film was more than a modest success with its $70 million opening weekend, but "New Moon" doubled that figure. It leaves me wondering what we can expect for the franchise moving forward, and how "New Moon"'s second week numbers might inform our understanding of the possibilities. Not content to wait, I got in touch with Jeff Bock, »

There’s a new interactive trailer for James Cameron’s much anticipated epic sci-fi adventure available over at the official Avatar website. The trailer itself is not available for online viewing in its interacting form as it has to be downloaded and run with Adobe Air. Whilst the actual trailer contains nothing we haven’t already seen, there is a total of eleven featurettes accompanying the trailer as part of the interactive process and they contain some incredible footage.
I hope you’ve got your Imax 3D tickets ready, because the man who perfected the idea of the “blockbuster movie” with films like Terminator 2: Judgement Day and Titanic is back after a twelve year hiatus. Michael Bay and McG are going to have to stop their petulant playground bickering about who has the bigger equipment and get their notebooks out, because school is almost back in session.

Did you think we were done covering Avatar just because 60 Minutes got up close and personal with the director James Cameron? Well, think again. We have more clips to bring you, this time from CNN. Yep, CNN is taking a look at Avatar in what amounts to an approximately six-minute feature aired this week. With footage from the film, an interview from Cameron, and behind-the-scenes clips, CNN covers not only what it took to make the live-action/CGI Avatar but also the criticism that's surrounding the film's "smurf"-like characters. Odd though, that the only criticism they really address is regarding the characters' appearances. Most of the critical comments and articles I've seen have been discussing the derivative plot and dialogue. Other topics, include: Titanic, what Cameron is aiming for with Avatar, and his subtle hint that you should see his latest film multiple times in theaters. Still trying to »

I don’t want to ward you off seeing footage from Avatar but I’m not exactly sure why Fox decided to put this new clip of a Thandor chasing down Jake Sully’s avatar (Sam Worthington) online when it’s clearly a big set piece that deserves to be seen in theaters and IMAX where you can really appreciate the craft and the dynamic sound design. And I’m speaking from experience because this is one of the scenes I saw at Comic-Con. It’s amazing and while this clip should give you a taste, you may want to hold off and let your first experience of it be when you see the full movie. If you do choose to watch the clip, it should definitely give you an idea of how fun this movie can be when projected in 3D.
If you decide you want to see the clip, »

Let's talk about the insane performance of "New Moon" at the box office this past weekend. It was projected to earn somewhere in the neighborhood of $70 million. That number was doubled once the ticket sales had been counted. Impressive, to say the least.
What's interesting is that, when you look back over the opening weekend box office record-breakers, "New Moon" is sort of the odd man out. Or, more accurately, odd woman out. Look at the list, the franchises represented there: "Star Wars," "Pirates of the Caribbean," "Batman," "Indiana Jones"... lots of male-oriented stuff. This isn't to say that only boys can like "Star Wars" or that there aren't a few gender-neutral/family-friendly title-holders -- I'm looking at you "Harry Potter," and you too, "Shrek" -- but the trend definitely seems to favor the boys. That on its own is noteworthy. Dig a little deeper, and some questions start to surface. »

CBS’ “60 Minutes” aired a profile on director James Cameron and his sci-fi epic “Avatar” movie on Sunday, confirming pretty much every bit of news, including that the film is approaching the $500 million price tag and that it is still unfinished. Avatar is marks Cameron’s first directorial work since his Oscar winning film, “Titanic,” back in 1997.
Story centers on Jake Sully, a former Marine confined to a wheelchair. Bitter and disillusioned, he’s still a warrior at heart. All Jake ever wanted was something worth fighting for, and he finds it in the place he least expected: on a distant world. Jake has been recruited to join an expedition to the moon Pandora, which corporate interests are strip-mining for a mineral worth $20 million per kilogram on Earth. To facilitate their work, the humans use a link system that projects a person’s consciousness into a hybrid of humans and Pandora’s indigenous humanoids, »

One of the shrewdest Oscarologists on the planet is Tariq Khan of Fox News, who often generously shares his views of current and past derbies with Gold Derby readers. Here he takes a nostalgic look at the past two decades, offering his take on the most competitive derbies. Words below are Tariq's. Thanks, m'friend!
We’ve often discussed those Oscar races that seem just too close to call . . . where it’s clear (or at least seems clear) that the eventual winner will nab the Oscar with only a few more votes than his or her nearest competitor. While we can never really know for sure (unless we get one of those top jobs at the accounting firm of PricewaterhouseCoopers,) we do have some idea of what may have been the closest races in Oscar history. Allow me to present what I believe were the 10 closest acting races over the course of the past 20 years. »

The record breaking New Moon played to jammed packed theaters this past weekend and fans couldn't get enough of Edward (Robert Pattinson), Bella (Kristen Stewart), and Jacob(Taylor Lautner). The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009) took home over $140M, making it the third biggest opening ever next to Spider-Man 3 (2007) with $151M and The Dark Knight (2008) with $158M. With the big movie weekend behind us, how long do you think it will take for New Moon to surpass this year's top grossing film? Do you think that New Moon has any shot of coming close to James Cameron's $600M Titanic (1997)? Just on opening weekend alone, New Moon surpassed some of the most highly anticipated films of 2009 such as Angels & Demons (2009), Inglourious Basterds (2009), and District 9 (2009). Thanksgiving week is upon on which means turkey and stuffing, family and friends, and big numbers for movie theaters nationwide. Statistically, Thanksgiving is a big »
