Moviemaker James Cameron has revealed the biggest film of all time was only made to fund a deep-sea mission to the real Titanic.
The director admits he had no intention of making an epic when he set out to film Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio in the 1997 movie - he just wanted to make enough money to go on a dream dive.
He tells Playboy magazine, "I made Titanic because I wanted to dive to the shipwreck, not because I particularly wanted to make the movie.
"The Titanic was the Mount Everest of shipwrecks, and, as a diver, I wanted to do it right.
"When I learned some other guys had dived to the Titanic to make an IMAX (jumbo-screen) movie, I said. 'I'll make a Hollywood movie to pay for an expedition to do the same thing.'
"Titanic was about 'f**k you money'. It came along at a point in my life when I said, 'I can make movies until I'm 80, but I can't do expedition stuff when I'm 80.'" »

Moviemaker James Cameron hopes to work with Titanic star Kate Winslet again even though the actress once revealed the intense director tried to drown her.
Stars of Cameron's films have often criticised the filmmaker for his extreme techniques - and Winslet went public with the fact she often prayed for death during miserable water tank scenes in Titanic.
But the director feels sure the Brit was simply over-exaggerating the fact she almost died while making the blockbuster love story.
He tells Playboy magazine, "We simply let Kate think she was nearly drowning. A little spluttering and coughing does not count in my book, because I have almost drowned several times and I know what it feels like.
"Asking God to please let you die? I was thinking the same thing at about the same point (in the film)... Kate probably got some unnecessary stress from me, but I would say 99 per cent of her stress was internally induced as part of her acting process.
"The real question is, 'Would she work with me again...?' My guess is, absolutely. I'd certainly work with her again; she's very talented."
But Cameron suggests he has no plans to work with her co-star Leonardo DiCaprio again: "Leo DiCaprio switches his acting on and off like a faucet." »

Titanic director James Cameron is convinced lusty male film fans will fall in love with Zoe Saldana as a 10-foot tall blue alien in his new movie Avatar - because he has created the perfect imaginary woman.
The pioneering moviemaker used the very latest camera technology to turn actors and actresses into fantasy beings in his alien love story - and he's particularly pleased with the way Saldana's character came out.
Cameron says, "Right from the beginning I said, 'She's got to have t**s... (and) I came up with this free-floating lion's mane-like array of feathers, and we strategically lit and angled shots to not draw attention to her breasts, but they're right there.
"The animation uses a a physics-based sim that takes into consideration gravity, air, movement and the momentum of her hair, her top."
And there's one scene in particular in which Saldana's character, Neytiri, reveals a nipple that will excite film fans when the film eventually hits DVD - because it was deemed too revealing for a PG-13 rated film.
The director tells Playboy magazine, "We had a shot in which Neytiri falls into a specific position, and because she is lit by orange firelight, it lights up the nipples.
"That was good except we're going for a PG-13 rating, so we wound up having to fix it.
"We'll have to put it on the special edition DVD; it will be a collector's item." »

An article in the New York Times has caused quite a stir today in the movie community after it claimed a $500 million budget for James Cameron’s 3-D film, Avatar.
Michael Cieply’s report wonders if Fox can turn a profit from a production that costs half a billion, a total that includes everything from paying the special effects wizards to TV spots on Nickelodeon. The studio claims the costs of making the actual movie are around $230 million, possibly a low-ball number (like most studio budget estimates) but still under the roughly $267 million spent on 1997’s Titanic after an adjustment for inflation.
Cieply writes Fox will likely spend somewhere around $150 million to market Avatar globally, but how does that suddenly add up to 500? It continues to say $250M in domestic ticket sales would mean Fox was in the black, a seemingly arbitrary number even when you figure in outside investors. »

It looks like James Cameron’s Avatar is being setup to fail by every metric possible except the one that counts: “Is it a good movie?” Set up for a fall by unreasonable expectations brought on by intense secrecy, Avatar has already been derided for lackluster CG (even though Cameron said at Comic-Con that it was Gollum back in 2002 which confirmed that Avatar was possible) and a New York Times piece which applauded Cameron as a craftsman but one completely oblivious to the needs of actors or a rich story.
Now another damaging story has appeared in the NY Times, this time reporting that the cost of production and marketing for Avatar, spread out over multiple investors, is $500 million dollars. Hit the jump for details and remember that you’ve decided to be disappointed no matter what.

James Cameron has said that he likes his films to blow the audience away. The director of upcoming 3D sci-fi movie Avatar also told The Times that it was "incorrect" that he was scared of filmmaking after 1997's Titanic. Cameron said: "I like to blow an audience away. I like to f**k with their heads. I like to show 'em stuff they've probably seen in a dream but they've never seen in a movie. "Like they've had an experience outside their day-to-day life, outside this world, maybe outside their body. It will have been a visual journey, a physical journey - in the sense you feel like you've actually climbed that mountain - and an emotional journey." When asked if studio executives were worried about the (more) »

Urban legend — if not filmgoers — has been lavishing James Cameron's Avatar with all sorts of superlatives since even before the minutest actual details about the film were revealed. Call it the "Cameron effect." The creator of Titanic — the biggest box office blockbuster of all time (more than $1.8B at the worldwide box office) — comes with built-in expectations, both in terms of what he next produces theatrically, and what that project reaps in ticket sales.
But any way you slice it, Avatar will have to do a lot of reaping. The New York Times has published an interesting article about the sheer expense that is Cameron's highly anticipated, perhaps over-hyped, Avatar. According to The Times, the film's budget is swelling towards the $500M mark, when global marketing expenses are factored in. The key question therefore becomes: Can this film turn a profit?

There are many theories, ideas or should I say 'schools of thought' on how the world would end. At the height of the Cold War, nuclear annihilation ranks at the very top. While others argue it will not be man who will destroy the world (directly) but - an epidemic of global proportions (most probably from a potent strain of virus - think: I am Legend) or severe climactic change (another ice age perhaps? That would be Day After Tommorow right?) or mechanical uprising (The Terminator, anyone?) or even attack from the outside - conquering aliens (Mars Attacks!) or perhaps an asteroid. And let's not forget zombies!
