When you talk about the year of cinema that was 1999, there are the films that come immediately. Fight Club, The Sixth Sense, The Matrix, Eyes Wide Shut. I love The Insider, have a soft spot for eXistenZ and Three Kings and then it starts getting complicated, as films like American Beauty, Girls Don’t Cry, and The Green Mile haven’t exactly weathered as well, while films like Office Space have only grown in estimation. At the time, most wouldn’t have listed Galaxy Quest as one of the great films of 1999, and yet ten years later, someone like David Mamet can call it a perfect movie. And it is. By Grabthar’s Hammer, my review of Galaxy Quest after the jump.

We're still not exactly sure what Nicole Kidman (Eyes Wide Shut) meant when she said Robert Pattinson was a 'fine' actor. Was she referring to his talent or was she referring to his drop-dead gorgeous looks? Nobody will ever know for sure, but for now, we'll assume she was complimenting the actor on his movie performances. In any case, Kidman told MTV News that she and the "Twilight" hunk were in talks to star together in the film about journalist Georges Duroy (Pattinson) and his rise to the top of Parisian high society in the 1890s. Kidman would have played Madeline Forestier, Duroy’s onetime mentor. “Bel Ami” is the title of the film and it looks as if Kidman won't be starring in the flick after all. Read on for the full scoop!

Year: 2009
Directors: Richard Kelly
Writers: Richard Kelly
IMDb: link
Trailer: link
Review by: agentorange
Rating: 9 out of 10
Richard Kelly channels no less than the ghost of Stanley Kubrick to turn Richard Matheson's blip of a Twilight Zone idea into one of the most astounding pieces of cerebral science fiction cinema I have ever seen. Yes, The Box is that good. It dares to scale the same intellectual heights as 2001: A Space Odyssey and it revels in the potent, restrained formalism of The Shining without ever leaving its two main characters or plot too far behind. In fact, Kelly is so self assured in executing this delicious layer-cake of a movie that The Box is now a front runner for my choice of best film of the year (yep, move over Moon) and I absolutely can't wait to see it again so I can dig even deeper into its box of mysteries. »

Unlike many of her Hollywood peers, Nicole Kidman says she prefers to keep an air of mystery about her life. So that means no tell-all memoir, no blogging, and no Tweeting. "If you know what is going on inside somebody's head all the time that's not a good place," the actress, 42, tells the December issue of British GQ. "You can't read somebody's diary. You shouldn't read it. I burnt most of my journals after I remarried ... You're only going to find out bad things." In the interview, however, Kidman gives a hint about the adventurousness that infused her romances over the years. »

Matthew Modine: Better Angels
By
Matthew Modine has been something of an iconoclast most of his working life. After being groomed for ‘80s teen idol status in early films such as Private School and Vision Quest, Modine was also one of the first actors of his generation, along with Sean Penn, to take on riskier projects, such as Robert Altman's Streamers, Alan Parker’s Birdy, Gillian Armstrong’s Mrs. Soffel, and Alan J. Pakula’s Orphans. It was his lead role as the cynical Marine Private Joker in Stanley Kubrick’s Vietnam epic Full Metal Jacket that put Modine into the pantheon of young actors who were more than just pretty faces and knowing winks at the camera. This, after all, was the young man who turned down the lead in Top Gun, arguably the prototypical ‘80s blockbuster, due to its cold war politics. From the beginning, »

Are you ready for another hippie, hippie shake? The New York Post reports that Cocktail is getting turned into a Broadway musical by producer Marty Richards, and Heywood Gould, the pen behind the book and film, will write it. But that's not all. Gould told them: "I am writing it as we speak. Marty Richards is on board and he's working on the score. It's far too early to talk about casting. We haven't approached anybody yet. But I do like Katie Holmes." Yes, original star Tom Cruise's wife. Gould might not be the end-all on decisions, but since he's involved with all the story's incarnations, I bet he has some sway.
The 1998 film focuses on a young guy (Cruise) who drops out of school and becomes a famous bartender. Eager to have his own bar, he heads to Jamaica to earn enough money. While there, he must choose »

I wasn't quite sure how to properly word the headline for this post considering I want to make sure you understand I am talking about the season pretty much running from Thanksgiving to Christmas, but I also want to make sure you know the film itself doesn't have to necessarily be about the holidays.
Take Die Hard for instance, it's set during Christmas time, but it isn't a Christmas film. However, it fits in with what I am looking for here. Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, Eyes Wide Shut, Fanny and Alexander, Batman Returns, Gremlins, The Thin Man and When Harry Met Sally are other examples. Hell, I would even say Rocky IV and Lethal Weapon count. As a matter of fact, I would say the non-Christmas, Christmas movies are the more interesting additions. How about The Shining or even Psycho?
Then, of course, I personally love films such as Love, »

The highlight of the fall art-house movie season is Danish-born director Nicolas Winding Refn's ambitious, brutally beautiful “Bronson," a high-energy biopic about Britain's most violent prisoner, Michael Peterson Aka Charlie Bronson, brought to audacious life by Irish actor Tom Hardy. Working with cinematographer and former Stanley Kubrick collaborator Larry Smith (he lit "Eyes Wide Shut" and worked on "The Shining" as well as Refn's "Fear X") and production designer Adrian Smith, Refn creates a sensational experience, the psychological and physical journey of the one-in-a-million Bronson, a crook who discovers his artistic talent during his many years in prison. Gilded clip reflects band's new status as pop royalty.
OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder in the "All The Right Moves" video

There is a gilded feel to OneRepublic's "All the Right Moves" video, and it makes sense the band would go that way.
After all, the song could almost be described as electro-charged chamber music, with its pealing organ and trilling strings and Ryan Tedder's gold-leaf falsetto (so that explains the masked ballroom dancers). And there's no denying the fact that OneRepublic have entered the triumphant, downright baroque portion of their career: their upcoming Waking Up album (due November 17) follows the success of 2007's Dreaming Out Loud, which turned the band into pop royalty, so the trappings and formalities of the clip can be understood, too.
Still, what the video is actually most reminiscent of is one of Panic! at the Disco videos — with all its shimmery ephemera, »

Many films come out every year with critics and fans alike, compiling lists of their bests and worsts. There are also many films that fall between the cracks, only to be discovered years later. Many critics believe that one of the best years in cinema was 1939, when Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz were released alongside many other classic gems.
Personally, I’ve always felt that 1999 was an epic year for movies, providing us with so many interesting films. In fact, 1999 was such a good year for movies that even some of the bad ones are still worth watching!
So, please sit back and put your memory caps on as Screen Rant takes on a retrospective of 1999 in the world of film.
In 1999, the world was a very different place. We were on the cusp of a new millennium and 9/11 was something that nobody - not even »

It is rarely highlighted what a strange habit and practice cinema-going is. Off we go to sit in a darkened room, usually with complete strangers, and watch something akin to a dream unfold before us. After all, Hollywood in particular, has been known as “The Dream Factory”. Why restrict it to Hollywood? Cinema = dreams. And as the subconscious plays havoc; dreams can turn into nightmares.
Audiences can laugh, cry and scream together. Each person maybe processing information in a variety of differing ways, yet, filmmakers employ a bag of tricks to invoke particular responses, at particular times.
Film experiences have a habit of becoming cherished, personal memories. It can achieve an ambiguous effect. Millions were astounded by Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park, just as they were terrified by Jaws, seventeen years earlier. Alfred Hitchcock devised the infamous shower sequence in Psycho relying on suggestion, chocolate sauce, rapid editing and shrieking »

Burbank – Chat Fatigue is coming.
Forget swine flu (or H1N1); Chat Fatigue will be the sickness that will overtake millions this fall. The group most susceptible to this are NBC viewers. Now that Jay Leno will be taking over the 10 p.m. slot from Monday to Friday (starting Sept. 14) on the Peacock network, viewers will get four hours of people sitting behind desks and talking directly to the camera.
Can the average viewer really handle going from Leno to local news to Conan O’Brien to Jimmy Fallon to Carson Daly? How many guys in suits and ties sitting behind a desk do you want to experience after an 8 hours of work day with guys in suits and ties sitting behind desks? They’re all going to stare at you through the boob tube and jibber jabber. Kinda like the doofus with the desk next to you at work. »

Furthermore, Pitbull who tweeted about having a duet with Jennifer earlier this year revealed he and Jennifer have filmed a music video aimed to promote the soon-to-be-released single. He described the video as "an upscale Eyes Wide Shut - where my role is being taken advantage of by these beautiful women who are, like, massaging me."

A Brad Pitt rep says the Inglourious Basterds star didn’t actually make fun of Tom Cruise’s Valkyrie , as one German magazine reported. But just in case he did, Joal Ryan of E! wants to you to know that Cruise is way cooler anyway. Why? Eye patches are interesting—mustaches not so much. Brooke Shields is cool. She's cool with Cruise. Aug 21, 2009 He's done it again. Quentin Tarantino has delivered. Unlike anything you will see the rest of this year or even the next few movie seasons, his Inglourious Basterds is a daring, inventive, genre-defying film that has already polarized viewers. One of the elements missing from this season (and many in recent years) has been a movie worth arguing about. Remember how people ridiculed or adored films like A.I., Eyes Wide Shut, or even The Blair Witch Project? Whatever side of the debate you fall on, doesn't it feel like there are fewer and fewer ...Read more at MovieRetriever.com »

You know what happens when High School Musical hottie Vanessa Hudgens stands in front of a mirror, has a digital camera in her hand and easy access to a broadband line is in the room? She acts like she's Nicole Kidman filming a scene for Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut. Something tells me that if Vanessa's camera also recorded sound we'd hear Chris Isaac's "Baby Did a Bad Bad Thing" playing in the background.
Yesterday an assortment of photos showing an alleged Hudgens standing in front of a bedroom mirror and wearing something very tiny and gold around her waist hit the web, the kind of thing you'd see a lady wear on the stage in a gentleman's club or at a Michael Bay pool party. While gossip blogs and celeb fansites wondered if it was the real Gabriella or just a very close approximation, their minds also drifted »

Dallas — As fans learned from Bella's birthday bash in "New Moon," celebrations with the Cullen clan aren't always the best idea. But over the weekend, thousands of people attended a sold-out event in the Lone Star State, eager to prove that Twilighters know how to party.
"TwiCon '09 is a 'Twilight' convention," explained actress Christian Serratos, who plays Angela Weber in the series, looking around at all the Twilighters bearing "Team Edward" T-shirts, "I Drive Like a Cullen" bumper stickers and, most importantly, smiles. "We're meeting fans, signing autographs, taking pictures and doing all that jazz. And we're having a good time."
Downtown Dallas was transformed into Forks West during the four-day convention at the Sheraton hotel, across the street from a »
