Anyone Wants Another Amityville Remake? No? The Weinsteins Do…

26 November 2009 1:11 PM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

It’s either a bold, brave move on the part of a company who know how to reinvent a horror classic merely five years after the last rehash, or it’s the desperate flogging of a horse that’s not only dead but was set six feet under a few years ago.

Nevertheless the Weinstein Company and Dimension films believe the time is rife again for a return to The Amityville Horror, according to Bloody-Disgusting, and despite the 2005 remake starring a bearded be-sixpacked Ryan Reynolds and Melissa George not exactly chilling friends and unnerving people, the prospect of another visit to Long Island looks to be in our future.

Of course the project is in the very early stages and there’s little chance that this will see the inside of a cinema for a good long while, yet it points to a disturbing trend, namely the rebooting of a »

Jessica Alba Tackles Action Role in 'The Insiders'

25 November 2009 11:03 PM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

If you've had a chance to watch the grueling promo trailer for The Killer Inside Me, you know already that it's potenially the riskiest role of Jessica Alba's none-too-breathtaking career. I don't know whether it's a real step forward for her acting - it's only a trailer, even if it's longer than usual - but I can say in no uncertain terms that it's the most liberated she's been on screen, and whatever squeaky clean image she portrayed before I saw Casey Affleck whip her bare ass and slap her around has been at least temporarily reevaluated.

Pajiba now writes that Alba will pair with Mabrouk el Mechri, director of Jcvd, for the graphic novel adaptation The Insiders. Over the summer, Alba bought the rights to the Belgian comic book series with Robert Rodriguez, who is set to produce for his Sin City and Machete co-star. Alba will play an action heroine, »

Exclusive Interview Fantastic Mr Fox

25 November 2009 8:00 PM, PST | MoviesOnline.ca | See recent MoviesOnline news »

Huzzah! An interview! You're old friend The Dude isn't afforded the opportunity to conduct a lot of interviews. Mostly because whenever I do, I ask bizarre questions, such as the time when I asked Jessica Alba for her fries, or the time I tried to ask Chris Evans for his cheese platter. (My ultimate goal is to get all members of the Fantastic Four to give me food stuffs, and speak honestly about it). However, when the chance presents itself to interview, I will gladly take it, then do something strange with it.

Wes Anderson was the gracious victim kind enough to grant me a one-on-one interview with him this time around. We were supposed to discuss Fantastic Mr. Fox. These are the questions I asked him instead. Seriously.

To reiterate, those are seriously the questions I asked. (The dubbing was to give the Eagle a more noble voice). And »

Silver Surfer spin-off in doubt, says writer

25 November 2009 1:10 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Writer J. Michael Straczynski has given an update on the Silver Surfer spin-off he penned for 20th Century Fox.

The film would focus on the cosmic-powered being who was introduced in the second Fantastic Four film. Straczynski, the creator and showrunner of Babylon 5, seemed the ideal person to do it.

There's been no movement on the film for some time, apart from Doug Jones saying he was under contract to reprise the role.

Straczynski now tells Collider the project seems to be on hold at present: "What happened was when Fantastic Four 2 didn't do as well as they hoped it would do, it caused them (Fox) to call into question a Silver Surfer movie.

"The script that I wrote picked up right where Fantastic Four 2 left off. So if they do a Silver Surfer film down the road, it'll have to be its own separate [thing]."

Silver Surfer Movie (Sort of) Happening [Updated]

25 November 2009 4:42 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

[Update: Silver Surfer isn't as dead as first reported. See post for details.]

The last significant update we heard on the proposed Silver Surfer movie was last summer when director Alex Proyas said he’s definitely not working on the project, emphasizing that he’d never work with Fox studios again.

Since then, we have found out that Fox is pushing forward with the Fantastic Four reboot and that it would feature an entirely new cast. What does that mean for the Silver Surfer spin-off many were hoping for? Well, it’s unlikely to happen anytime soon.

Writer J. Michael Straczynski recently spoke with Collider last week and touched on the subject, saying that the not-so-hot reception to Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer made the studio put plans for the Silver Surfer character on hold.

Straczynski’s script has been done for a while and is in the hands of Fox, however it’s tied into the last Fantastic Four movie »

Straczynski And Sand Update Us On Silver Surfer, Red Star

24 November 2009 8:44 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

From World War II stories to zombie apocalypses (apocolypsi?), the Ninja Assassin screenwriting team of J. Michael Straczynski and Matthew Sand told Collider recently that they are going to show up in pretty much every opening credit sequence you're going to see between now and 2012. What we may not see come to come to fruition, however, is the not-so-hotly anticipated Silver Surfer film, which seems to have been tossed into the gutter after Fantastic Four 2: Electric Boogaloo fizzled at the box office. Straczynski.s script is kicking around but hopes are not high despite rumors of a Fantastic Four reboot. Hey, if there can be two Hulk movies made within five years of one another, why can.t the Fantastic Four get their second chance, eh? Regardless, if Fox doesn.t keep using the property the rights will revert back to Disney, who I.m sure you remember recently »

J. Michael Straczynski Says 'Silver Surfer' Script Stalled, Reveals Story Details

Babylon 5” creator and noted comic scribe J. Michael Straczynski said his “Silver Surfer” script is in limbo at Fox thanks to the lukewarm response received by “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.”

“What happened was when ‘FF2’ didn’t do as well as they hoped it would do, it caused them to call into question a ‘Silver Surfer’ movie,” noted Straczynski in an interview with Collider during last weekend’s “Ninja Assassin” press junket. “The script that I wrote picked up right where ‘FF2’ left off. So if they do a ‘Silver Surfer’ film down the road, it’ll have to be its own separate things.”

Straczynski added, “It was definitely adult fare. I wanted to tell the origin of the Surfer and get into that whole thing.”

Julia Stiles Debunks Comic Book Casting Rumor... But Not The One You Think!

20 November 2009 2:01 PM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

By now you've all heard the latest "Spider-Man 4" casting rumors — depending on which source you read, both Julia Stiles and Anne Hathaway are up for the role of Felicia Hardy, the burglar known as Black Cat. We offered up our own suggestions for the role a while back in our weekly Secret Identity column, and also pondered Eliza Dushku's willingness to play the role.

However, Stiles' arrival on the rumor scene got us thinking about a recent interview with the actress in which she discussed her interest in comic book movies and debunked a casting rumor that had been floating around the 'Net. While the interview was conducted prior to the recent "Spider-Man 4" buzz, it seemed a good time to throw the clip out there and see what possibilities fans can draw from it.

"No, not that I'm aware of," Stiles said when asked about a rumor »

Secret Identity: Five Comic Book Characters Rachel McAdams Could Play Instead Of Black Cat

19 November 2009 2:51 PM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

The cat is out of the bag for Rachel McAdams, who recently debunked rumors that she'd appear in "Spider-Man 4."

However, that hasn't stopped the rumor mill from speculating on other actresses who could play Black Cat, but it has seemingly dashed McAdams' comic book movie prospects.

And just because McAdams isn't suiting up as Felicia Hardy doesn't mean she wouldn't work wonderfully in certain comic book adaptations. From superheroes, newspersons and gun-toting badasses, here are five characters from the comic book world that could be perfect casting for McAdams.

Lois Lane: Would-be "Superman" director James McTeigue says that the property isn't flying anywhere anytime soon, but that doesn't mean that DC Entertainment isn't carefully considering where to take the Man of Steel.

Given that the franchise is undergoing a reboot, the lead roles are presumably wide open. If that's the case, why not cast McAdams as Lois Lane? She »

'Twilight' Meets 'Youngblood' (Again): Rob Liefeld Describes 'Badrock' Screenplay By 'New Moon' Director

19 November 2009 12:31 PM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

The worlds of comic books and "Twilight" overlapped unexpectedly back in August when "Youngblood" director Brett Ratner mentioned a desire to see "Twilight Saga" star Robert Pattinson in the lead role for the superhero team-up movie. Now, on the eve of the "New Moon" premiere, we have another "Twilight"/"Youngblood" crossover for you.

"Youngblood" creator Rob Liefeld revealed on Twitter earlier today that "New Moon" director Chris Weitz had drafted a script in 1996 for a movie based on Badrock, one of the fan-favorite Youngblood superheroes. Describing the screenplay as a "Beavis/Butthead/South Parky take on a kid superhero," Liefeld said studio New Line balked at the film's initial budget and eventually dropped the project.

I got in touch with Liefeld to find out more info about the "Badrock" movie that never happened, how Weitz got involved and some details about the film's plot.

Julia Stiles is latest to be linked to role in Spider-Man 4

18 November 2009 7:08 AM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Julia Stiles is the latest actress to be caught up in the web of rumour and speculation about a role in Spider-Man 4.

The 28-year-old, whose credits include all three Bourne films and The Omen remake, met with a casting company in New York, according to Ugo.

No role was specified, but it's being speculated she is another actress under consideration to play villainous love interest Felicia Hardy aka Black Cat. It's worth adding that we don't yet know if Black Cat is even part of the story.

Stiles had apparently been considered for the role of Susan Storm/Invisible Woman in Fantastic Four, before Jessica Alba landed the part.

Rachel McAdams earlier denied reports that she had met with producers over the Black Cat role. Romola Garai admitted being among hundreds of actresses who had attended open auditions but said she was not going to be cast in the film. »

Shadows of The Dark Knight Pt 2: Is dark the key to success?

16 November 2009 2:25 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

When Batman blockbuster The Dark Knight made a billion dollars at the global box office and became America's second highest-grossing movie of all time, several subsequent action-adventure releases used its dark formula but without the same success.

As everyone now realises, the Warner Bros release did not succeed because it was dark, as Marvel's studio boss Kevin Feige has pointed out.

As Feige rightly says, it succeeded because it respected the source material (and also made it accessible for the ordinary viewer). Admittedly, it was helped along by the interest generated by Heath Ledger's untimely demise.

But hardcore fans do tend to want more violence in films - on superhero fan forums the cry for an adult rating is commonplace. Studios, though, are more wary about shutting out the family market altogether, especially since Watchmen and even more especially in a shaky economy.

Blood, gore and brutal violence often has to be omitted, »

McMahon, Cox Are Ready for 'Red'

13 November 2009 9:05 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

It seems every time I turn around, someone new gets added to the upcoming comic book adaptation Red. Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, John C. Reilly, and Mary-Louise Parker were previously cast in the Bruce Willis vehicle, to be directed by Robert Schwentke.

They will further be joined by Julian McMahon, Ernest Borgnine, Richard Dreyfuss and Brian Cox, according to The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision Blog. McMahon will play the Vice-President who is responsible for ordering the killing of a former CIA agent (Willis’ character), while veteran actor Borgnine’s part has been described as "the keeper of the CIA’s darkest secrets." As for Dreyfuss and Cox, they will play a wealthy man who made a fortune on government contracts, and a Cold War spy who has a rivalry with the main protagonist, respectively.

McMahon played Doctor Doom in the Fantastic Four movies, which were also based on comic books. »

'Red' Adds McMahon, Borgnine to Cast

13 November 2009 10:07 AM, PST | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

The adaptation of Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner’s Red miniseries has moved ahead and added Julian McMahon (Nip/Tuck, Fantastic Four), Richard Dreyfuss, Brian Cox, and the great Ernest Borgnine, who will play the keeper of the CIA’s darkest secrets.  The film, scheduled for November 19, 2010 release, already stars Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman, John C. Reilly and Mary Louise Parker.

Summit Entertainment, flush with Twilight cash, is producing this film based on the 2003 WildStorm miniseries about a former black-ops CIA agent whose a quiet, retired life is shattered when a high-tech assassin shows up at his home. Willis is the spy with McMahon portraying the Vice President who heads up a shadow conspiracy. The 92-year-old Borgnine will play the man who knows the dirty secrets and Dreyfuss is a wealthy industrialist who benefitted from Government contracts. Cox is a former Cold War-era spy with an axe to grind against Willis. »

Red adds Julian McMahon, Brian Cox, Richard Dreyfuss, Ernest Borgnine

13 November 2009 6:59 AM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Summit's adaptation of the DC/Wildstorm comic book miniseries Red is adding four new cast members.

Julian McMahon (who played Doctor Doom in the Fantastic Four films), Brian Cox (the villainous Stryker in X2: X-Men United), Richard Dreyfuss and film and TV veteran Ernest Borgnine (pictured) are in negotiations to join the film, according to Heat Vision.

Red was a three-book series in 2003 and 2004, which was written by Warren Ellis and illustrated by Cully Hamner.

It tells the story of a former black-ops CIA agent (played by Bruce Willis) living a quiet life in retirement until hi-tech assassins are ordered to kill him for knowing too much.

McMahon would play a Vice President with a dark side who is at the center of a shadow conspiracy; Cox is a former Cold War spy and nemesis of Willis; Dreyfuss will be a wealthy man who builds a fortune out of lucrative »
