Goyer Wants Magneto On The Back Burner

3 hours ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

I could write an essay on everything that was wrong with X-Men Origins: Wolverine. As a comic book film, it ranks somewhere between the never-meant-to-be-released Fantastic Four movie from 1994 and the straight-to-video Captain America movie from 1990. There was simply nothing there to enjoy. That opinion solidified, the entire time the Wolverine origin was being punted around, a Magneto back story was also in the works, but it now seems that it will be a few more years before we can facepalm while attending another X-Men related disaster. In an interview with MTV, writer David Goyer (who ranges from Batman Begins to Jumper) has backed recent statements by producer Lauren Shuler Donner, saying that Fox is a bit confused where to go with the franchise, and that the project should be placed on the back burner. Goyer also seemed to give the impression that he no longer cares much about the »

Len Wiseman Goes Post-Apocalyptic

13 hours ago | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Len Wiseman, the man behind Underworld and Live Free or Die Hard,  has signed on to direct and produce an untitled pitch that Fox has just grabbed the rights to.

Details (and screenwriters!) are scarce, but according to THR, “the project is based on an original idea about a group of people who survive the end of the world and the mystery surrounding how they got to that position. The studio is seeking writers for the project.”

Wiseman is currently in limbo at the moment, with his name attached to Schrapnel and Atlantis Rising, but no project in production. Seeing as how this post-apocalyptic project hasn’t even had the details fleshed out, I’d say we’re more likely to see one of those two projects coming to fruition first, or Wiseman stepping in for another director elsewhere.

I have conflicted thoughts about Wiseman. He seems to straddle a »

Writer and artist Becky Cloonan has teased what to expect from Strange Tales #3 when she takes on the King of Atlantis. Cloonan, who describes Namor as "the hottest guy in the Marvel Universe", revealed that her short story features the Fantastic Four’s Reed Richards. She told Marvel.com: "I wouldn't want to spoil anything! But I do have a surprise twist ending, if you will, and a cameo by the Invisible Woman, who is also totally hot. "So it should be (more) »

Anthony Hopkins As Odin (Not Brian Blessed) And Grant Morrison's Mystery Project In Today's Twitter Report

30 October 2009 11:31 AM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Much of the comic book Twitterverse had opinions on Anthony Hopkins newly announced casting as Odin in Marvel's upcoming "Thor" movie. A few more, including Jeff Parker and Andy Diggle seemed to be partial to him over Brian Blessed, who had previously been mentioned for the role.

Elsewhere in the Twitter Report feed, I don't usually include non-comics-related talent, but director Paul McGuigan mentioned that he and Grant Morrison are working on new project together in Scotland. No word on whether this is something for comics, film or both—but the Twitter Report will be watching. Check that out after the jump, along with a great Judge Dredd mask, how one DC editor is dressing for Halloween and which zombie film Ed Brubaker has been watching.

It's all in the Twitter Report for October 30, 2009.

'Nightmare On Elm Street' New Freddy Krueger Thanks Fans For Casting

'The first I heard about it was people were suggesting me on the Internet for the part,' Jackie Earle Haley says.

For decades, Hollywood cast the person they thought would bring in the most money for a movie role, often resulting in some odd choices (Vince Vaughn in "Psycho," Kevin Costner in "Robin Hood," Keanu Reeves in virtually everything) that were largely rejected by audiences. But now, it's the 21st century, and the Internet has made film more of a conversation than a monologue. From Michael Chiklis as The Thing in "Fantastic Four" to Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool in "Wolverine," several high-profile castings of the last few years have begun online — and Jackie Earle Haley couldn't be happier.

Dave’s Weekly Comic Book Recommendations

28 October 2009 12:30 PM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

If last week was light, this week is heavy.

From DC Comics this week, we have the latest in Blackest Night event books with the main book and Green Lantern. Considering Spike TV’s Scream Awards aired last night (I think) and Geoff Johns did win Best Comic Book Writer, its probably within reason that you ought to pick these books up.

Though some dude from the Twilight “saga” did also win Best Breakthrough Performance over Chris Pine, so maybe those fans shouldn’t be trusted. Blackest Night is some good fun.

Today is MarvelFest in New York City, and this is certainly Marvel’s week for comics.  I mean Dark Avengers Ares written by the awesome Kieron Gillen. Jonathan Hickman and Dale Eaglesham’s awesome take on Fantastic Four is back, as well.

If you, like me, were waiting for the trade of Old Man Logan than you want »

Interview: Dean Haspiel on Act-i-vate, ‘Bored to Death’, and Jack Kirby

26 October 2009 9:00 AM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Before getting a chance to sit down and talk with Dean Haspiel (American Splendor, The Quitter, Billy Dogma) at the Alternative Press Expo, I met him at the Isotope Comics Lounge on the eve of Ape weekend for a pre-ape Isotope in-store bash. Currently, Haspiel is but one artist that is part of a larger collective of storytellers at Act-i-vate.

Recently, October saw the recent release of The Act-i-vate Primer by Idw Publishing, featuring new and original stories. While at the Isotope, I discovered Haspiel is as gracious and as nice as I could have imagined just sitting and talking with him as he signed and sketched a head shot of Harvey Pekar in my copy of The Quitter.

That night talking generally about the unique positivity that courses through the comic industry, Haspiel signs my Pekar sketch advising me to “never quit.” It’s good advice.

Yankees Vs. Phillies World Series: The Marvel Universe Reacts!

26 October 2009 6:44 AM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

The New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies are officially going head-to-head in this year's World Series, causing folks from all walks of life to root for one baseball team or the other—in fact, even the heroes of the Marvel Universe are taking sides.

Earlier in the season, Marvel Comics editor-in-chief Joe Quesada spoke with Mlb.com about the various baseball franchises competing for a shot at the World Series title, which has now been whittled down to the Yankees and the Phillies.

According to Quesada, the two characters in the Marvel Universe that would most easily be identified as Yankees fans are Wolverine and the Thing.

"I think the biggest Yankees fan [in Marvel Comics] would be Wolverine," said Quesada. "Wolverine's been around for decades—he's almost immortal—and he probably got to see the Babe play. I think Wolverine is a Yankees fan, and probably Ben Grimm from the Fantastic Four. »

Geoff Johns opened up with some episode titles and director info for his two-part "Smallville" story that's coming up, and Tom Welling will direct the second part, titled "Legends," according to those tweets. Five Cool Movies For Spring 2010

23 October 2009 3:12 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

It’s a slow week for movie releases, with Fantastic Mr. Fox the only release of note in the UK, along with Cirque Du Freak. Most of the remaining big films this year are due out in November and December.

So, with the big winter films already hyped to the max, and with Iron Man 2, Clash of the Titans and Robin Hood being the highly anticipated movies this Spring, I thought i’d take a look at some Spring movies that maybe aren’t getting the attention they deserve – The Losers, Green Zone, A Couple of Dicks, Machete and Kick-Ass. Note, this is a list of the films i’m personally looking forward to, so you won’t necessarily agree with me…

The Losers

When is it? – 9th April.

Where is it? – Currently filming in Puerto Rico

Who is it? – Directed by Sylvain White, starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Chris Evans, »

Former Aquaman Says 'Smallville' Return Isn't Planned, But 'There's Always A Chance'

22 October 2009 11:01 AM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

What does a new scripted comedy series about college football have in common with comic books? According to the cast of "Blue Mountain State," quite a lot!

Comics Continuum spoke with Darin Brooks, Alan Ritchson and Sam Jones III, three of the stars behind Spike TV's upcoming football-centric comedy series "Blue Mountain State," about their own interests in the comic book medium.

For Brooks, his experience is relegated to mere fandom, but both Ritchson and Jones have appeared on the CW's "Smallville." Fans will remember Ritchson as Arthur Curry, the aquatically-inclined hero better known to comic book readers as Aquaman.

While Ritchson doesn't have any immediate plans for a "Smallville" reprise, he isn't closed off to the idea of returning to Clark Kent's stomping ground.

"There's always a chance, but right now we're focused on 'Blue Mountain State,'" he said. "But you never know."

'Akira,' Dave McKean's 'Cages' Movie, And Inviting Brian Bendis To School In Today's Twitter Report

21 October 2009 11:01 AM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Dave McKean proved that his award-winning artwork can go for the long haul in his feature length movie "MirrorMask" with Neil Gaiman. Now, it sound like he's taken a step forward with adapting his own graphic novel "Cages," according to a tweet this morning.

Meanwhile, Brian Michael Bendis received an old-fashioned fan letter in the mail inviting him to appear at a 10-year-old's school. Unfortunately, there's a sad twist to the story. Find out about that, along with who Edgar Wright saw "Akira" with in 1989, where Steve Lieber's currently trying to obtain a new passport, and what terrible dreams about "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" plagued Jonathan Hickman last night.

It's all in the Twitter Report for October 21, 2009.

Joe Quesada Talks ‘Captain America’ At Big Apple Comic Con

21 October 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Marvel’s chief fanboy, Joe Quesada, was at this year’s Big Apple Comic-Con to talk about what’s going on in the Marvel universe.  With the recent accusation of Marvel by Disney it’s hard to deny the company’s success. So, just how does Marvel continue to compete against DC it’s competitors?  According to Quesada, “The way we differentiate ourselves is by not sucking.”

Yes, you read that correctly. Marvel’s Editor-in-Chief claims “not sucking” is a sound business strategy. Okay, I can’t argue that point. From a business perspective not sucking, or at the very least sucking less then your competition, should be somewhere in the business plan and/or mission statement.

Unfortunately for Quesada, someone at Marvel hasn’t read said business plan.  If they had we, the fans, would not have been forced to endure Ghost Rider, either Fantastic Four film or the »

Fox Going to ‘Rehab’

19 October 2009 4:27 PM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Can I be a script consultant, at least?

Fox Studios has taken on Rehab, a comedy flick by Sam Laybourne. Laybourne is currently working on the new ABC series Cougar Town, with Arrested Development and Angels in America also to his credit.

The movie’s plot revolves around a man who fakes being treated at a rehab center in order to reconnect with an old high school girlfriend who became a rock star and is now in rehab herself.

Peter Chernin and Will Gluck, who helped develop the script, are set to produce the film, with Gluck likely directing as well.

Gluck and Laybourne have worked together before on the show The Loop, while Chernin has been transitioning from Hollywood exec to producer.

Exclusive: Brian Bendis Reveals Marvel's 'Ultimate Enemy'

Anyone who follows Splash Page on Twitter is already aware that one of the chief architects of the Marvel Universe, Brian Bendis, dropped by MTV HQ last week. My conversation with Bendis covered a wide variety of topics, including the just-announced "Ultimate Enemy" event he's scripting with artist Rafa Sandoval.

Along with revealing some details about the shape "Ultimate Enemy" will take when it kicks off in January, Bendis also offered up his take on where the event will leave Marvel's Ultimate universe, and who the major players will be in the miniseries.

"A new enemy brings forth a big mystery, and certain pinpoints of the Marvel universe are attacked by some grandiose villainy," explained Bendis of the story that will unfold in three, four-issue miniseries that combine to form the "Ultimate Enemy" event.

According to the writer, the three stories will be titled "Ultimate Enemy," "Ultimate Mystery," and finally, »

Chris Evans Calls 'Scott Pilgrim' Skateboard Training 'An Uphill Battle'

15 October 2009 1:16 PM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

In "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World," Chris Evans plays skateboarder-turned-actor Lucas Lee, one of the evil ex-boyfriends Scott Pilgrim must battle in order to win the heart of Ramona Flowers. While I don't want to spoil the film for anyone who hasn't read Bryan Lee O'Malley's amazing series, it shouldn't be a surprise that Evans' character will, at some point, engage in some skating.

So, when we caught up with Evans recently, we had to ask him whether he took to board easily, or if he has a nasty case of road rash to remember the film.

"They put me in a few weeks of stunt training with a guy who made skateboarding look easy as pie," said Evans. "It was an uphill battle."
