Gomorrah (Criterion Collection) I just published my review of this one and the film certainly holds up to repeat viewings and left an even greater impression on me than it did when I wrote my "B" review last year. The presentation is great and there is a wealth of supplementary material that can be a bit taxing, but, if taken in slowly, will open your eyes even wider. If you are interested check out my review here and you can read the included Chuck Stevens's essay "Gomorrah: Terminal Beach" available right here. Angels and Demons Nope, wasn't about to request this one for review. I watched it once and once was enough for me. You can read my "C+" review if you need further explanation as to my thoughts on this film, but I don't ever intend to revisit it, »

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is Terry Gilliam’s best film since Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas or perhaps 12 Monkeys in 1995. In Parnassus, Gilliam proves that he retains the ability to pair his unique sensibilities with a beating heart of a character driven story. His visuals alone are noteworthy, but in this film they’re not the showcase.
The film centers around Christopher Plummer’s titular Dr. Parnassus, a bizarre Vaudeville-Wonka magician who is able to capture the souls of any passers-by who are willing to pay a pound to venture into their own imaginations. Parnassus is thousands of years old, due to a wager he has made with Mr. Nick (Tom Waits), who is ostensibly the Biblical Devil.
The unfortunate consequence of immortality, however, is that Parnassus continues to carry-on his show in a modern London that simply doesn’t care about his theatrics anymore — to see his »

Verne Troyer is best known for playing Mini-Me and acting alongside Mike Meyers in the comedic Austin Powers films. While his latest role occasionally offers comic relief, it's the serious tone of his portrayal he wants to talk about.
MakingOf recently sat down with Troyer to discuss his work in director Terry Gilliam's "The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus." During the interview the actor shared that he felt "very honored Gilliam gave me a chance to portray a dramatic character." Troyer also admitted that the director, who he worked with on "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", personally wrote this role for him and that their friendship influenced the characterization of Percy.

Let's be honest, without Twilight we probably wouldn't even be talking about Summit Entertainment any longer. They have, of course, been around much longer than most of us realize with films such as Memento, American Pie, Mr. and#038; Mrs. Smith, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas as part of their production company cred. However, as distributors they have Twilight and the modest hit in Knowing (which they handled domestically and not internationally). Beyond that what are we really talking about?
They managed to squander what I understand to be a rather entertaining teen comedy in Sex Drive, Push bombed, Astro Boy is still in theaters but you wouldn't know it, Sorority Row (a teen horror with the promise of nudity) earned $11 million and the sin of all sins, Summit's 17%-Rotten Tomatoes rated Fly Me To The Moon made more money at the box-office »

There are plenty of trippy movie scenes – but watching them sober makes you feel like the designated driver in a roomful of drunks
Thirty-six years ago, I dropped a tab of Lsd. It was Ok, but I never felt the urge to do it again, and never thought much about it – until the other day, when I was watching Taking Woodstock. To the sound of Love's The Red Telephone, Ang Lee serves up an acid trip so uncannily spot-on, I swear it gave me my first ever flashback.
It's not as though there's ever been a shortage of trippy scenes in films. It's just they always seemed to chime more with the experiences of the film-makers than with my own. Indeed, watching them sober, you often feel like the designated driver in a roomful of babbling drunks. In the aptly-named The Trip, Peter Fonda has a psychedelic experience in which, »

Terry Gilliam has been working tirelessly to enliven his audiences for more than 40 years. He has used his imagination and creativity to lure in audiences with unforgettable films such as "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" "The Fisher King," "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" and "Brazil". This year Gilliam brings us another unforgettable film, "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”. The movie is much-anticatipated; production was almost shut down mid way due to the tragic death of the lead actor, Heath Ledger. What might have halted others to a standstill only delayed Gilliam. While the cast and crew were devastated by Ledger's death, all agreed the movie must be completed and everyone close to the project made it their mission to finish the film.
MakingOf sat down with Gilliam to learn more about the making of "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus". “Imaginarium’s” initial concept came from the simple notion »

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is the UK/British Columbia-lensed fantasy feature directed by Terry "Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas" Gilliam, written by Gilliam and Charles McKeown. The surreal film follows the leader of a travelling theatre troupe who, having made a deal with the Devil, takes audience members through a magical mirror to explore their imaginations. Canadian actor Christopher "The Silent Partner" Plummer, singer Tom Waits and the late Heath Ledger star in the film, though Ledger's death one-third of the way through filming caused production to be temporarily suspended. Ledger's role was then recast with actors Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell portraying transformations of Ledger's character 'Tony' as he travels through a dream world. The film received a PG-13 rating for "violent images, some sensuality, language and smoking". "...In the present day, immortal 1,000-year-old 'Doctor Parnassus' (Plummer) leads a traveling theatre troupe.including a sleight »

Johnny Depp only plays "special" characters.
The Hollywood actor has revealed he takes great care when deciding which films he wants to appear in and will only accepted a movie role if he finds it fascinating.
He said: "The person I represent must be somehow special. I was totally fascinated of John Dillinger in 'Public Enemies' for example. And Captain Jack Sparrow was revolutionary - a bank robber but at the same time national hero. At that time banks were hated - like today. I see him as a sort of Robin Hood."
The 46-year-old star - who stepped up to replace the late Heath Ledger when he died tragically during filming of 'The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus' - says he was so impressed with the film's director Terry Gilliam, he jumped at the chance to help him out.
He explained to Germany's Joy magazine: "Since I've worked »

In the dark days following the death of Heath Ledger, Terry Gilliam was grieving the loss of a close friend and couldn't bring himself even to contemplate what would happen to the film, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, that they had both been working on when the young Australian actor sadly passed on.
"It was a terrible time," he says. "And frankly I was just devastated by the loss of such a great guy. The film didn't really come into it at that point."
But gradually, encouraged by his collaborators including his daughter, Amy Gilliam, who is a producer on the film, he began to accept that finishing it would be a fitting tribute to Heath even though, at first, he couldn't see how they could do it. Ledger died in January 2008 with the British end of the production completed but with weeks of shooting still planned on sound stages in Canada. »
