Sex & Nudity

  • 3/10
  • Paul thanks John Coffey for "helping him" , Coffey then asks if Paul's "missu's was pleased" ..
  • A prisoner said "You wanna suck my d*ck?"
  • There is a scene where we hear sex noises from outside of a house (not graphic and nothing is shown.)

Violence & Gore

  • 8/10
  • A horribly botched execution by electric chair, lasting for a couple of minutes. We hear the victim convulsing and yelling in pain for some time and his head is on fire momentarily before he dies. The corpse is shown afterwards and there is significant disfigurement to the face. The scene is supposedly based on the effects of real executions by electric chair that have gone wrong and as such is particularly disturbing.
  • Two more executions, each lasting roughly 20 seconds. One of them is more emotional than violent.
  • A man cradles the dead bodies of two girls; their hair is matted with blood. The father bloodlessly punches him across the face a few times in despair before he is pulled away.
  • An antagonist is shot five times in the chest, some blood and bullet wounds appear on his shirt as he slumps down dead.
  • A prisoner elbows one guard and chokes another with handcuffs (a bit of blood spurts from his mouth) before bashing his head on the wall, a bit of blood is on their faces. He then kicks an incoming guard in the crotch before another one hits the prisoner twice, knocking him out.
  • A mouse is purposely smashed by a shoe, we see some blood around its head/face.
  • We see a bit of blood on a door and a small blood trail on a floor.
  • An antagonist hits a prisoner once on the fingers with a billy club, it's later brought up that three of them were broken as a result.
  • Guards blast an antagonist with water from a fire hose.
  • A few punches and a slap or two from angry guards towards an antagonist.

Profanity

  • 7/10
  • 12 uses of 'f*ck', 6 of 'shit' and 'son of a bitch', 3 of 'd*ck' (1 used homosexually), 1 use of 'n**ger', 2 of 'faggot' as an insult, and 1 of 'p*ssy' (last 3 from antagonists). Also 12 uses of 'goddamn

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • 3/10
  • One or two brief instances of smoking. Paul and Hal have what may be beer while grilling some food.
  • The guards grind up some sort of medication/pills that they put in Wild Bill's beverage to knock him out.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The second prisoner execution is not only gory but also very intense. It is an overly prolonged death and I would certainly recommend being ready to mute it and shut your eyes if it gets too much. The last execution scene has sudden strong flashes of light which can be alarming but is mostly just very emotional.
  • 9/10
  • An antagonist attacks some guards early on. In two scenes, a protagonist is shown to be in pain while urinating.
  • The rape and murder of two little girls play a role in the plot.
  • More compassionate than The Shawshank Redemption in some ways, despite the violence.
  • Rating should be R for disturbing violence, intensively strong language and some sexual material. Viewers under 16 need to be supervised when watching this movie.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The execution of John Coffey is extremely emotional and upsetting, even though it isn't violent. Since he plays such a huge part in the plot of the film and the guards' lives, it's very emotionally disturbing, and you can see it in the guards' faces. The second execution scene is very disturbing.
