Michel Hafner (24 August 1999):
This 16:9 enhanced DVD edition of In Dreams (1999) by Dreamworks (no pun intended) is of ok quality.
The film master used is clean and images are steady. Color reproduction looked good to me, but it's hard to tell how accurate it is since the film's color design is highly stylized. I haven't seen a print of this film. In a normal movie some shots would be too reddish, but this is likely to be intended here. Contrast does not always look optimal though. While blacks are deep there is a lack of shadow detail in some cases (such as the scene where the husband visits the detective at the end of chpter 2)).
Sharpness is uneven and on average not that great for an enhanced disc. The weakest point of this transfer is the amount of noise and grain that reaches distracting levels in several shots. It's too high for a modern film and suggests that the film elements used are not second generation but further down the printing tree. Positive though is the absence of agressive digital noise suppression and the artifacts that come along with it. There is some ringing around contours and there are overenhanced edges that are sometimes distracting (such as in chapter 1 after the credits, 3:52..). I have not seen distracting compression artifacts, though. The average bit rate is a good 6.0 MBit/s and it shows.
This DVD is, all in all, quite nice. On a high resolution system you will clearly see above discussed problems, but it's never so bad that it becomes a big issue. Some sequences look very good, such as the opening credits. Most look decent. The menus have been designed with care and look and sound great.
