(Peter Sarsgaard in An Education, above.)
by Terry Keefe
(Currently appearing in this month's Venice Magazine.)
Like a seal of approval, it’s always a good sign of a film’s merit to see Peter Sarsgaard in the opening credits, because he chooses his projects well, whether it has been in a leading or supporting role. For a few years now, he has been in a strong enough career position that he could opt only to play leads, even if those were in smaller films, but from his film choices, he has also clearly been more interested in the quality of role, and not necessarily the size of the part, or the paycheck. As Mark, the uniquely resourceful slacker best friend of Zach Braff in Garden State, and as Clyde Martin, the protégé in Kinsey, and in his portrayal of real-life New Republic editor Charles Lane in Shattered Glass, and

Bond girl Eva Green was so obsessed with Leonardo DiCaprio as a teenager, she followed him around when he was filming in her native France.
The actor was shooting scenes for 1998's The Man In The Iron Mask in Paris when the French actress was 17, and she used to spend all her time trying to catch a glimpse of him.
She says, "I was like, a stupid fan - in awe of him and in Leonardo's eye-line. I'm sure I bothered him a lot."

John Malkovich, Dylan Walsh and Scott Glenn have joined Diane Lane in the Disney production of “Secretariat”, the movie based on the horse with the most prized semen in history. Details after the jump.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, John Malkovich has joined “Secretariat”, the horse-centric biopic that Randall Wallace (”The Man in the Iron Mask”, “We Were Soldiers”) is directing for Disney. Malkovich will play Lucien Laurin, the real-life jockey who became the trainer of the legendary Triple Crown-winning horse known as Secretariat.
As announced back in June, Diane Lane will star in “Secretariat” as Penny Chenery, the housewife who inherited Secretariat and went on to earn the title “the first lady of racing.” Dylan Walsh (Dr. McNamara on “Nip/Tuck”) will play Lane’s husband in the film while the great Scott Glen will play a southern aristocrat who loses the horse in a coin toss. A 3-D 'The Three Musketeers' Brings Together 'Resident Evil' And 'Bridget Jones's Diary' Filmmakers

I wish I could say “Slumdog Millionaire” had a little something to do with this (remember what the kids called themselves), but Paul W. S. Anderson’s decision to adapt “The Three Musketeers” yet again for the big screen seems to be solely based on the fact that the title lends itself easily to the 3-D format. Expect it to be called “The 3-D Musketeers.”
It’s hard to see the appeal, even with the gimmick. I’m not sure many moviegoers are still interested in the swashbuckling trio and their pal d'Artagnan. It’s been a long time since Hollywood’s last take on the Alexandre Dumas classic. That version, starring Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland and Chris O’Donnell, and featuring a popular song by Sting, Bryan Adams and Rod Stewart, was anything but a blockbuster hit.
Five years later, another of Dumas’ Musketeers stories, “The Man in the Iron Mask,

It's The 3D Musketeers!

All for one and one for all – The Three Musketeers are heading back to the big screen, and Paul W.S. Anderson is the man who’s going to take them there. And this time, they’ll be in retina-shredding 3D.It’s been sixteen years since Alexandre Dumas’ enduring creations – the swashbuckling Porthos, Athos, and Aramis, and their headstrong young friend, Dogtanian, sorry, D’Artagnan – headlined their own film. Well, we say ‘graced’, but very few have fond memories of the risible Charlie Sheen/Kiefer Sutherland/Chris O’Donnell version. Before that, we’ve had classic versions from the likes of Richard Lester, while Gene Kelly starred in a 1948 version. Most recently, the Musketeers showed up, played by Jeremy Irons, John Malkovich, Gerard Depardieu (with Gabriel Byrne as D’Artagnan), in Randall Wallace’s 1998 film, The Man In The Iron Mask.Theirs is a tale ripe for the cinema, full of intrigue,

Weekend Report: 'Transformers' Fends Off 'Ice Age' in Close Independence Weekend

Giant robots narrowly socked it to anachronistic dinosaurs over Independence Day weekend. With actual grosses reporting, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen weighed in with $42.3 million, while Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs came in at $41.7 million. Distributors Paramount Pictures and 20th Century Fox had estimated $42.5 million for each movie, which was the first time two studios had the same weekend estimate since 1998, when Titanic and The Man in the Iron Mask were in a photo finish. Paramount ended up having the more accurate Sunday projection, and that was the difference as both pictures were neck-and-neck on Friday and Saturday. With Public Enemies debuting solidly in third, business as a whole was up a tick from the same weekend last year, when Hancock was in charge.
Overall, Revenge of the Fallen has had a far more winning run than Dawn of the Dinosaurs. It will pass its predecessor's final gross in a matter of days,

Diane Lane Stars In Secretariat

There is a gentleman who calls the Empire office every few months to campaign for more Diane Lane coverage in our magazine. Well, it's his lucky day, because she's lined up a new film called Secretariat, about a racehorse of the same name and his groundbreaking owner.Based on the true story of 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat and his owner Penny Chenery (Lane), the film highlights her journey from housewife and mother who didn't know much about racing when she took over her father's Meadow Farm horsebreeding business, to first lady of racing. That happened in 1973, when Secretariat won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes to become the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years. Randall Wallace (We Were Soldiers, The Man In The Iron Mask) is directing, from a script by Mike Rich (Finding Forrester, The Rookie). The whole thing's a Disney film, so we don't feel we're

We've been rabbiting on about the Puss In Boots movie for a while now, and it seems that things are taking shape with a new writer appointed. TV script-scribbler Tom Wheeler, takes over from first-draftsman Chris Miller, who co-directed and co-wrote Shrek The Third. The stand-alone spin-off for Antonio Banderas' swashbuckling feline assassin who became one of Shrek's entourage was due for release prior to Shrek The Fourth - due on May 21 2010 - but this is looking less likely, with the new appointment of a writer so late.Wheeler currently has several scripts being developed including Cutlass Island and The Arcanum, which will be directed by The Man In The Iron Mask's Randall Wallace.
