Tim Burton returns to the handmade art of stop-motion animation for his deliciously macabre musical tale of a nervous bridegroom (voiced by Johnny Depp) who winds up accidentally wed to a sweet young corpse (Helena Bonham Carter) who yearns for true love. But return he must to his innocent of a bride (Emily Watson) as he’s a little out of place in the amusement park they call an underworld. He breathes, for one thing. The production is Rankin/Bass holiday special by way of Edward Gorey, with spindly figures, delightfully curlicued Victorian designs and a camera that swoops and creeps and flies through it all. In other words, classic Burton. The voice cast includes Tracey Ullman, Joanna Lumley, Albert Finney, Richard E. Grant, Michael Gough, Jane Horrocks and Christopher Lee and Danny Elfman provides the songs.
